Wholesome Treats: Gluten And Sugar-Free Banana Bread

Banana bread is one of the many guilty pleasures most of us enjoy, however one slice generally comes packed full of sugar. Therefore, food blogger @cocohealth has re-worked the traditional recipe to create a more wholesome and diet-friendly alternative.

“I am yet to meet someone who doesn’t love banana bread, but unfortunately the store bought versions are ladened with sugar and butter,” she insists. “Give my recipe a go; sugar, dairy and gluten free – you can satisfy your cravings without the guilt!”

If you’re more of the sweet tooth, adjust the recipe according to personal preference by adding a couple of tablespoons of honey or extra sweetener. Enjoy topped with tahini and a drizzle of rice malt syrup or peanut butter.


3 mashed ripe bananas (optional extra banana to slice on top.

1/4 cup coconut oil

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

3 eggs

2 tbsp Natvia natural sweetener or Stevia

1/4 cup walnuts, crushed

1 cup almond meal

1 cup buckwheat flour (can omit and sub for extra cup almond meal)

1/4 cup almond milk

1/2 tsp baking powder + 1 tbsp lemon juice


  1. Preheat oven to 160C.
  2. Mix in a bowl bananas, oil, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking powder, lemon juice and eggs.
  3. Stir in the almond meal, buckwheat flour, walnuts and Natvia/Stevia.
  4. If mixture is too thick, add milk gradually as necessary.
  5. Slice an extra banana and arrange on top (optional).
  6. Pour mixture into a tin lined with baking paper and bake for approx 1 hr or until browned and cooked through.

Banana, Coconut And Goji Berry Bread

Goji berries are said to be one of the healthiest berries on the planet – rich in antioxidants which can help to protect the eyes, improve circulation, protect the liver and promote weight loss.  This recipe combines these small gems along with a number of other beneficial ingredients including oats, flaxseeds and coconut oil.  Served warm or cold, this bread won’t last long!

1/3 cup of rolled oats

1 tbsp flaxseeds

2 tbsp coconut sugar

1/3 cup solidified coconut oil

4 eggs

1/3 cup coconut flour

1/3 cup almond meal

2 tbsp goji berries

2 tsp gluten free baking powder

1 tsp ground cinnamon

3 ripe bananas, mashed


  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius then grease and line the base of a loaf pan with baking paper.
  2. Combine three teaspoons of oats, two teaspoons of flaxseeds and one teaspoon of coconut sugar in a small bowl then set aside.
  3. Beat coconut oil and remaining sugar with an electric beater until pale and creamy.
  4. Beat in one egg and one tablespoon of the coconut flour then repeat with remaining eggs and coconut flour until combined.
  5. Add almond meal, goji berries, baking powder, cinnamon, banana, remaining oats and flaxseeds then stir to combine.
  6. Spoon mixture into the prepared loaf tin, smooth the surface, then sprinkle with the oat mixture that was set aside at the beginning.
  7. Bake for one hour or until firm then cool on a wire rack.

Banana Bread Scones Recipe

Try this quick and healthy banana bread scones recipe on a lazy sunday – your family will thank you for it! Using ingredients such as 2 ripe bananas and a touch of cinnamon for that authentic taste, enjoy with a fresh juice or even a rich coffee.


1 cup white whole wheat flour

1.25 cup all-purpose flower

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1.5 tsp cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 cup unsalted better (cut into pieces)

2 ripe bananas (chopped and mashed)

1 egg lightly beaten

Brown Sugar Glaze (optional)

1/2 cup confectioners sugar

2 tbsp brown sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

2-3 tsp milk


  1. Preheat oven to 350. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a baking mat.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flours, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. Cut in butter with a pastry blender or two forks until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in mashed banana and egg. Stir until just combined.
  4. Turn dough out onto well-floured surface. Dough will be soft and somewhat sticky. Knead 5-6 times until dough comes together.
  5. Shape into an 8-inch circle. Brush top of dough with water. Stir together sugar and cinnamon for topping and sprinkle over the top. Cut into 8 pieces and place on prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until light golden brown. Transfer to wire rack to cool.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk together sugars. Add in vanilla and 2 tsp milk. Add another tsp milk if you want a thinner glaze. Drizzle over cooled scones. Serve.
  8. Store leftovers in a loosely covered container.

Best-Ever Banana Bread

This is it: that cafe-style, moist banana bread you’ve been dreaming off. And it only takes a few minutes to get into the oven. A great recipe for making with kids and encouraging them into the kitchen!


1 1/2 cups caster sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter

2 eggs at room temperature

1/4 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 1/2 cups plain flour, sifted

3 large very ripe/black bananas, mashed with a fork

1/2 cup walnuts, pecans or chocolate chips (optional)

1 tsp vanilla extract


1. Preheat oven to 190C. Grease a loaf pan with olive oil or a little butter.

2. Mix together sugar, butter and eggs using an electric beater or stand mixer.

3. Sift together the dry ingredients, then add to the sugar mixture.

4. Stir through the bananas, nuts or chocolate chips if using and vanilla extract. Pour the mixture into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 1 hour or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the loaf comes out clean.

5. Let cool for 5 minutes, then remove from pan.
