Is this real life or is this fantasy?
Repurposing products is the key.
We CAN NOT stop watching these videos.
Because ain’t nobody got time for touch-ups.
Why only wear one shade when you can wear all of them?
We want all of them.
If you’re thinking about giving your beauty bag a makeover, these product gems are a must.
The UK cosmetics industry is worth an estimated £4.5 billion but an article in the Daily Mail shows that added toxic ingredients present in some forms of make up can cause danger. Although the UK Government regulates these products there are always loopholes that can be exploited. Here are ten chemicals and products to avoid.
1. Dying your hair
Latex Gloves from Brosch Direct are an excellent way to protect your hands when using hair dyes and other chemicals, but they don’t stop your scalp from being damaged during the dying process. Although hair products have changed drastically over the years there are still certain compounds such as coal-tar, which can cause bladder cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
2. Aluminium pigments
Most skin care products are safe; mascara, eye shadow and eye pencils all contain aluminium powder, which can lead to neurotoxicity and cancer. There is a misconception that high cost and quality products are safe but these products are just as dangerous as their cheaper counterparts.
3. Sunscreens and vitamin A
Half of all sunscreens on the market contain an ingredient known as retinyl palmitate, or vitamin A palmitate. This chemical should not be put onto skin if you are going to be in direct sunlight, it is used in many night creams due to the fact that you can’t use it in daylight. If you use a sunscreen with this additive you can develop tumours.
4. Perfumes and fragrances
Any product that has the word fragrant on the advertising is probably not going to be good for your skin. Some alcohols used in the manufacture of perfumes have been known to cause hormone disruption and allergic reactions.
5. Propylene glycol
This clear odourless, tasteless liquid is used in food and cosmetics and is classed as safe, but it can cause brain, liver and kidney disorders if used incorrectly or regularly. When used in the chemical industry as revealed on the mindbodygreen website it is treated with great care by the people working with it.
6. Benzoyl peroxides and acne
Acne can be a horrendous problem for the young and old but most creams contain the chemical benzoyl peroxide which can cause cancers and also become a skin irritant.
7. Teeth cleaning
Brushing your teeth twice a day or maybe more should be a safe process but the toothpaste itself contains a chemical called triclosan which is linked to cancer cell growth and can cause damage to the gums and premature births if used long term.
8. Hair straightening
Some people prefer straight hair others curly; if you are using chemical hair straightening products you may not realise the damage you are doing to your hair and also your body. These products contain keratin which can cause nerve, chest pain and rashes.
9. Green isn’t always safe
Some so-called green products can still contain harmful chemicals such as chlorphenesin and neurotoxin. When buying cosmetics even reading the label won’t give you all the information you need. Some chemicals are left out.
All of us use some form of anti-perspirant and don’t realise the possible dangers of the aluminium salts that are present which can cause of breast cancer and skin irritation.
It should come as no surprise that styling your hair with heat – straightening irons in particular – can potentially damage it. But what happens when you straighten your hair everyday?
A third of all women own a hair straightener to smooth down unruly hairs, but the hair-raising facts behind using a straightener might make you think twice before reaching for your heated tongs.
Brace yourself ladies, because yes, your hair straightener can cause some serious breakage that could potentially lead to your tresses falling out!
According to Dr. Tim Moore, Chief Technical Officer at ghd’s Research and Development Facility in Cambridge, “A lot of irons on the market have temperature dials up to 230 degrees, which is very bad for hair… it literally melts it.”
Consistently styling your hair at these high temperatures can change the colour of your hair permanently and dramatically reduce its ‘tensile strength’ – meaning that your hair strands will break halfway and then fall out. So basically, all that hair breakage that’s living in your brush is actually avoidable. But before you freak out and think you have to toss your beloved hair straightener, you can still use it, just on a lower heat setting.
When it comes to overheating, women with thick or curly hair tend to be the worst culprits. It’s a common misconception that going hotter will wield better results, when in fact more pressure will see your hair flattening a lot better than pumping up the heat.
“This is a physics thing – there’s a difference between temperature and heat,” explains Dr Moore. “When you’ve got really thick hair, you need to pump in more energy, but you don’t need any more temperature.”For the best results, use a straightener that responds quickly but maintains a consistent heat level.
The worst thing you can do for your hair is straightening it while it’s still wet or damp. You know that cringe worthy sizzling sound you hear when you clamp down on damp hair? That’s not supposed to happen.
“The temperature at which damage to your hair occurs actually drops with wetness. The glass transition phase temperature does the same thing. So for instance, if hair is 50 per cent wet, the temperature at which you can damage it has dropped to around about 100 degrees celcius,” he explains.
“So if you put a styler, even one of ours at 185 degrees, onto wet hair you’ll cause considerable damage. Essentially, water in the hair is suddenly expanding, it’s basically exploding the hair.”
He also warns that although some hair straightener available claim to work from wet to dry – this technology doesn’t actually exist. You should always ensure your hair is completely dry before exposing it to any heat based styling.
To try an overcome the damaging effects of hair straightening, deep conditioning treatment, or simple hair TLC can make a difference. When you wash your hair, leave your conditioner in for 5-minutes so your locks can soak in the extra moisture. Although, once you damage your hair too much, the only way to repair it is to grow it out entirely.
As much as we might want to – it’s probably best to air on the side of caution when it comes to using heated products.

We all know sticking to a beauty regimen can wreak havoc on our bank accounts, not to mention a lot of those costly products are filled with chemicals that do god only knows what. But, us mere mortals can finally rejoice because household beauty hacks can save us some serious time and money!
From apple cider vinegar to coffee filters, using everyday products, we can spruce up our regular beauty routines and liven up our hair and skin with little to no effort on our behalf.
We’ve all been having the benefits of coconut oil drummed into us, but did you know that it works wonders to soften your hair and save split ends, without giving them the cut. Using it as a conditioning treatment softens the look of split ends when it’s dry and helps add moisture to your hair before you wash it. Washing your hair strips it of its essential oils, so it’s important for us to replace them. Pure coconut oil is rich in fatty acids, so you can expect your hair to look healthy, shiny, and hydrated.
Use a homemade salt spray to create texture
Soda water and a teaspoon of salt is all you need to get that gorgeous post-beach look all year-round. Mix 600ml of the soda water with a teaspoon of rock salt in a spray bottle to make your own ocean spritz at home.
Lemon and sugar facial scrubs
Fashion blogger Zanita swears by this! All you have to do is mix lemon juice with caster sugar until you achieve a scrub consistency. It works to de-clog your pores and leaves your skin looking bright and fresh. Plus, for an added bonus it helps to clear pimple prone skin.
Apple cider vinegar that doubles as toner
Yes ladies, this is true and it works! Apple cider vinegar is a putrefying agent and acts as an astringent. So you can use it as toner and to fend of nasty breakouts or acne.
Blot your face with coffee filters
These are actually made from similar ingredients as blotting paper – but are a lot cheaper! Just stash them away and get blotting when you need to reduce shine.
De-puff your eyes with green tea
Green tea bags quickly de-puffs and tightens your under eye area. Applying cold caffeine based products under your eyes for five-to-six minutes can work wonders on tired, droopy eyes and serve as an instant pick-me-up.
Listerine and vinegar foot scrub
This at home foot treatment gently removes the dead skin from your feet, particularly the nasty hard skin that has a habit of forming on our heels. Mix the following ingredients together in a bucket and then soak your feet for 10-15 minutes.
1/4 cup of antiseptic mouthwash (Avoid blue as it can stain your skin).
1/4 cup vinegar
1/2 cup of warm water
Use plain yoghurt on burns
You’re casually straightening your hair, or adding some volume with your favourite curling iron, when you slip up and burn your ear. Ouch! But instead of spending the rest of the day complaining about your burn, try soothing it with some plain yoghurt. Immediately after you scorch yourself, apply it thickly over the surface of your burn and leave it for approximately 10 minutes. Yoghurt contains a lot of natural probiotics so it helps to restore your skins natural barrier.
Wash your face with olive oil
You’re probably thinking who the hell in their right mind would was their face with oil? Well, it’s more effective than you may think! The oil acts as a magnet for the oil in your skin and pores, it draws the oil out and leaves with you with softer skin and an extra glow.
Use sticky tape for perfect eyeliner application
Nail the tail of your smoking cat-eye look every time by placing some clear sticky tape in line with the end of your brow you can get a perfect flick by tracing your upper lash line along the edge of the tape. It’s that easy!
You can finally quit wasting hours standing in the beauty aisles at your local supermarket, everything you need is already in your cupboards.

Human beings are the most destructive creatures on the planet. We pollute our environment, we hurt each other, we start wars, and we leave derelict ugly buildings in every town in the world. Strangely, for a species that has rational thought, we also hurt ourselves, by mistake or by intention. Those actions limit our lives and sometimes reduce them in numerous ways – here are eight of the most common.
When it comes to calorie consumption no nation does it quite like the US, but according to a recent study British residents scoff an average of 3440 calories a day – well above the recommended intake. A poor diet combined with a lack of exercise is an accident waiting to happen for well being, and also affects a person’s confidence and social life. Obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and numerous other life-shortening effects are the by-products to gluttony and lethargy.
Lack of sleep
Poor sleeping can also lead to serious health problems, and there are numerous other possibilities – such as forgetfulness or accidents – that might have dire consequences. A consistent lack of sleep will cause your body to release more cortisol, a hormone associated with stress that damages the skin and makes you look older.
Where to start? A little wine or beer every day won’t hurt, but anything over 2-3 units per day (3-4 for men), equating to a standard glass of wine or pint of beer respectively, can damage internal organs and the nervous system. It’s also been linked with a decline in IQ and possible early onset of dementia.
Smoking 20 packets of poisonous chemicals a day will wreck your lungs and heart, and leave you with numerous symptoms of ageing such as dry, yellow skin, and bad teeth. Moderation, and combining smoking with vaping through Phoenix e-cig batteries, e-liquids and starter packs, will help.
We’ve already looked at how the stress hormone cortisol can affect the human body. While small increases do also have some benefits (preparing us for action, lower sensitivity to pain), long spells of anger or worry can impair cognitive function and send blood pressure rocketing.
Exposing ourselves to illness/pollution
Much of the human environment, particularly industrial or urban areas, is not conducive to long health – so why do so few people wear masks or protect themselves? As evidence, London’s air quality is the filthiest in Europe and a planned Heathrow expansion which could cost the UK £300m in fines from the EU, could only make it worse.
Drinking excessive tea and coffee
There is contradictory evidence on the consumption of several cups of tea and coffee. What is true is that at least some studies have shown desperate negative effects, from headaches and depression to high blood pressure and early death according to Mayo Clinic.
Lack of mental stimulation
Mundane work, boredom, and a lack of new experiences and mental tests can be deadly. Puzzles and reading increase the flow of blood to the brain, and promote and increase in protective chemicals. There’s also significant evidence that problem solving can lessen the risk of dementia. Think again when you pass through a day where you feel you haven’t learned anything.

While we are already familiar with BB, CC, and even DD, the EE cream is sure to change the face of makeup and skincare as we know it.
Formulated by Estée Lauder, the miracle cream stands for Enlighten Even Effect which helps skin in a variety of different ways, and aims to decrease the amount of unnecessary products you buy each year.
What does it do?
EE creams help to diminish the appearance of common fine lines around the face, while also acting as a neutral barrier for clear, healthy skin. The lightweight formula boasts an SPF of 30, which is perfect if you need something quick and easy to apply before heading out the door.
Just like a CC cream, it aims to correct uneven skin tones with a light coverage finish which feels like wearing no makeup at all. Apply generously onto problem areas such as the t-zone, chin, and cheeks for an instant glow without a cakey finish.
Who can use a EE cream?
There is no age limit when it comes to taking care of your skin, and the EE cream certainly does not discriminate. The formula is gentle enough to use on any skin type, and won’t disrupt your skincare routine – rather, it enhances it! Use over a nourishing moisturiser or skin primer for best results, and remember to blend into your neck and hairline so it looks like your own skin!
How does it compare to other creams on the market?
Rather than focusing on just one main skincare issue, the EE cream comes with a string of different benefits if you decide to take the plunge.
Colour corrector: Create an even base by using an EE cream on clean skin to cover hyperpigmentation spots and uneven skin tone. Apply generously onto these areas, and let the product soak into the skin before proceeding with cosmetics.
Moisturiser: Almost all beauty creams come with an added SPF which is an essential in protecting skin on a day-to-day basis. Don’t worry about that subtle sheen which most products have; the EE cream is light and creamy without creating any additional shine on oily skin.
Primer: Use as a primer to prep the skin for other makeup or cosmetics. If you need your makeup to last the distance, follow-up with a solid cleansing routine which will create a flawless base.
EE creams are designed to be used in a variety of ways, so you can cut down the cost on your other products!
Where can I try an EE cream?
If you are unsure about your first EE cream, ask for a sample the next time you’re at the beauty counter. Another alternative is using a few inexpensive products from the drugstore which will give your skin a sense of what the EE cream is like. Some of our cheap and cheerful favourites include:
