Throwback Thursday: Beverly Hills Babies

Being a mum as well as running a business revolving around mothers, I find there is never lack of great gossip at www.motherinc.com.au (known as the mothership) on parenting and even more on parenting celebrity-style.

RELATED: Throwback Thursday: Golden Globes 2004

Is the celebrity mother pregnant for the same amount of time as non-celebrities, OR does she order her C-section a tad early, prior to total tummy expansion and possible stretch marks? How do the majority of the Hollywood-version of celebrity mums regain their figure in what seems a matter of a few weeks. Denise Richards (Charlie Sheen’s possible ex) just voted Yummy Mummy of the Year in LA, sets an amazing example of body-shrinkage, post birth, and looks positively spectacular in a mini-skirt and tight-top over her breast-feeding boobs.

Is the Hollywood-style Celebrity Mum a super-breed of mother? How does she do it?

During a recent visit to the City of Angels, I checked into Babyland, Beverly Hills-style. After interviewing local baby-retailers and the medical fraternity I discovered more about the mini-empire which supports this unique breed of new mums, many whom employ at least three staff to help with their new-born.

Many Beverly Hills mums have night nurses for the new-borns, to ensure a good night sleep (pre-facial and manicure the following day). Yet – post natal depression is just as much a risk, even if it is brought on by a combination of hormones and stress from juggling an entourage of baby-staff?

The Beverley Hills mum will have no less than two of the following staff members to manage on an average day: midwife; nurse; nanny; night nurse; doula (trained helper) to assist with all the dirty work/cleaning up associated with looking after a new baby and permanent pre-birth staff may also include a personal assistant, secretary, cook, cleaner, gardener and more.

However despite what appears to be an overwhelming amount of assistance to manage just one new-born baby, you?ll be pleased to know that these high-maintenance mums, like every other new mum still battle with breastfeeding, stress, ?mother-guilt?, exhaustion as well as the rise and fall of a myriad of other emotions which naturally accompany the arrival of a new baby in the home.

The more I thought about a new mum trying to recover from pregnancy and birth, while simultaneously keeping up with the peer-pressure of a high profile lifestyle, the more I actually felt sorry for them! For Beverly Hills mums, the extreme pressure to stay on the social circuit, get a perfect body back in nano-second, run a charity, do lunch, be seen at the right yoga or pilates class while promoting yours and your husband?s latest film project, business or book-to-be, is mandatory and leaves no choice but to rely on hired help?and lots of it!

But of course, if there?s a commercial opportunity to capitalise on any aspect of Babyland in Beverly Hills, retailers have found it. The ?shops? which serve both resident BH mums and visitors are quite simply – brilliant! Just a few include: ?Maba?, which stocks a colourful supply of both essential and fun products, but also provides a baby-minding while you have your hair or nails done; a sanctuary for mums needing to breastfeed or just enjoy a chat in a beautifully decorated and well-stocked private room (stocked with mineral water and snacks as well as, nappies, creams, a lounge chair and a box of tissues to dry any tears of exhaustion) and a lactation specialist on hand. Another store, ?Bonpoint? sells exclusively designed clothes for babies and toddlers, including top to toe outfits designed to the ?looks? of stars such as Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday! The Bonpoint range is so exclusive it?s not on any website – all clients receive a personal phone call to allow them to view the range at their leisure?

And finally my favourite- a full blown Day Spa with private lounge and Caf?, where your kids are whisked away on arrival to enjoy separate activities and games, led by a childcare specialist, for hours and hours and hours.

Being a new mum in Beverly Hills is actually a tough gig, according to the medical practitioners and retailers who cater to this rare breed of females. I?m still not convinced she?s not cloned.

Airbrushing Britney: See The Before and After Photos

Britney Spears is making a comeback with her new song Work B*tch with a sexy new music video to go with it.

But even music videos are not immune to airbrushing, as revealed in these before and after photos released by HOAX Filmes, the visual effects studio that worked on the video.

Even though the singer is in amazing shape, the ‘after’ photos show her with an even slimmer waist and thighs.

HOAX released the edited images last week and promptly took them down.

It’s not the first time Spears has had digital airbrushing in one of her music videos. In 2007 she was edited to look much slimmer in her Piece of Me clip.

What do you think of digital airbrushing?

Bitching about Britney

Bitching about Britney

Thumbs down for Britney
Simon Cowell from American Idol has his claws out again. Better known for his stinging attacks on superstar hopefuls, Cowell has hit out at real celebrities. His latest blow is aimed at Toxic singer Britney Spears. He has told TeenHollywood “I shouldn’t say what I’m about to say…but the shot of her in her underwear onstage, I would’ve gone to the gym a bit more before I did that. Sorry, but true.” Ouch! The 22-year-old singer has been plagued with negative feedback from a wide range of critics on the European leg of her Onyx Hotel tour. She has picked up one positive thing from her trip though ? she has recently become an English Tea addict. The Mirror newspaper claims she came to love tea while staying at a hotel in Kensington. It has apparently replaced her regular sugar filled energy drinks. Bet former sponsors Pepsi aren?t too happy to hear that.

But Christina comes up tops!
Christina?s the favoured one
One person Cowell isn?t rubbishing, is Christina Aguilera. He has said in TeenHollywood that she has a “Great voice, great attitude. I just think this girl is a star. I really like her. Where (Britney’s) different from Christina is that she is someone who’s so reliant on great pop records produced and written for her, whereas Christina is a bit more kind of old school – just an unbelievable singer.” Meanwhile, Christina is busily fighting back at claims that she cancelled her American tour because she couldn?t fill concert venues. As reported in SheSaid two weeks ago, Christina Aguilera had cancelled her 3 month tour of North American due to strained vocal chords. The pop princess is still maintaining it?s her health that is the problem. ?They are saying I could not sell out the venues but they were all sold out. I’m suffering from a bad throat.” She has been spotted rehearsing with her crew, so fans such as Cowell can hope the tour might be resurrected.

Not so happy…
On the rocks?
Maybe things aren?t so perfect in the Brad Pitt / Jennifer Aniston household after all? Brad was recently heard on the set of Ocean?s Twelve having a bit of a domestic. His mobile phone rang and his assistant told him Jennifer was on the other end. Pitt was seen pacing up and down the set, saying, “Yes… yes… I understand… yes…!” He was so pre-occupied with his conversation that he ignored the assistant director who approached three times to tell him they were ready to shoot the next scene. Brad tried to respond to the verbal tirade but he was interrupted sharply by Jennifer. The last words he spoke before ending the conversation were, “Can you please calm down!?” Maybe it has something to do with the rumours of an affair between Angelina Jolie and Brad? Angelina was asked at Cannes last week whether she had slept with the spunky Troy star and she emphatically denied it. Friends did say that she was deliberately staying away from the sitcom star, hoping to avoid any confrontation.

Mother of twins Geena Davis
What’s with the weird names?
Geena Davis is the proud mother to not one, but two baby boys. The 47-year-old star of Thelma and Louise gave birth to Kian William and Kaiis Steven on May 6 at a Los Angeles hospital. Both mother and babies are doing well, despite the health fears due to Geena?s age. Geena and husbund Reza Jarrahy, 33, are already parents to 2-year-old daughter, Alizeh Keshvar.
And… Helen Hunt is the proud mum to a baby daughter. MaKena lei Gordon Carnahan is the first child to Hunt and her partner, director Matthew Carnahan. MaKena lei was born on May 13 in Beverly Hills, and is ?doing very well?, according to Hunt?s publicist.

Beckham’s close shave worth $5 million bucks

Beckham’s close shave worth $5 million bucks

Beck’s close shave
Recent revelations about David Beckham from the ?Sleazy Senorita? and the Aussie callgirl obviously haven?t hurt the soccer stars marketablitity. The UK’s News of the World has now reported that Beckham has just landed a $5 million dollar deal with Gillette to star in a worldwide advertising campaign. A highly placed advertising source told them: “Gillette landed him before the scandal – but believe it’s done nothing to dent his marketability.” According to the leading UK tabloid newspaper, Beckham will appear in adverts around the world promoting razors and shaving foam after Euro 2004. The source added: “If anything, David is even more popular than ever.”
Can?t wait to see the spin on that campaign. See how using Gillette razors can help you escape a close shave with your wife? Do you think that has any thing to do with his new ?do? ? appearing with wife Victoria last week with his blonde locks shaved off?

We’re yet to see the end of Paris
One night in Paris
Just when you thought we had heard the last of this taudry little sex scandal, Paris Hilton‘s infamous home video of her having sex with former boyfriend Rick Salomon is going to be released in adult film stores. Red Light District Video, a suburban Los Angeles porn production company, said on Thursday it has acquired rights from Salomon to distribute the full 45-minute video under the title One Night in Paris. A spokeswoman for the company said the homemade tape, parts of which surfaced last year on Internet porn sites, will be released commercially in adult video stores on June 15. Ohh goody can?t wait for that one to hit our local Blockbuster store!

Michael Jackson, in court on Friday
Jackson sacks lawyers
Just days after being charged with child-molestation charges, Michael Jackson has sacked his two A-List lawyers Mark Geragos and Benjamin Brafman. He has replaced them with just one attorney, high-powered criminal lawyer Thomas Mesereau Jr. Published reports state the King of Pop tried to acquire Mesereau’s services previously, however the attorney wasn?t willing to divert his attention away from defending 1970?s TV star Robert Blake for the shooting death of his wife in 2001. In a statement released on Monday, Jackson said ?Let me make it clear, I have not replaced my defense team, I have replaced the lead attorneys?. According to Brafman, the decision was ?unavoidable under the circumstances? and “based on recent developments and discussions with various persons in the Jackson camp.” Jackson is expected to plead not guilty when he appears in court on Friday.

A not happy Britney Spears
Spears in tears
Britney Spears is making her way to London for the European part of her world tour, however her life apparently isn?t all roses. Earlier this year she was seen frolicking on the beach with her new man looking carefree and happy. All that has changed, however, with the release of new tabloid reports. Apparently her new man hasn?t been honest with her, omitting to tell her he has a wife and children at home. Britney was seen sobbing on the way to the airport before boarding the plane to London. According to reports, this tearful display is just another sign that Britney?s mental health is unstable. Her unhappy state is seen in her new video clip Everytime, which shows her overdosing on pills and slashed wrists. The suicide scenes had to be removed from the clip before its release due to the outcry in the US. There are also rumours the star is using prozac and binge boozing all in an attempt to overcome her depression.

Tom and Penelope call it quits

Tom and Penelope call it quits

All over red rover
Actors Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz have decided to call their three-year relationship quits, according to reports from the States. The two met in 2001 on the set of Vanilla Sky, shortly after the breakup of Cruise?s marriage to Nicole Kidman. Cruise’s sister and publicist, Lee-Anne Devette, reportedly said that the couple broke up in January, and had managed to keep the news of their split quiet until now. She said the break-up was “amicable”. Robert Garlock, spokesperson for Cruz, 29, told People magazine the two “remain good friends”. He reportedly added that the split was not a result of Cruise’s religious affiliations, and confirmed that Cruz had not converted to Scientology. Sources revealed that neither actor is involved with anyone else at present. No doubt the romantics of the world are already hoping for a Cruise/Kidman re-union on the horizon? Don?t hold your breath!

The original Samantha – Elizabeth Montgomery
Ah MacLaine, you’ve done it again
If you loved the hit TV series Bewitched then you will be happy to hear that not only has Nicole Kidman signed on to star as Samantha Stevens in the forthcoming big screen version. But that?s not all. Veteran actors Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine reportedly “look set” to play Samantha Stevens’ parents in the feature film, according toVariety magazine. And further casting news has funnyman Will Ferrell as Samantha?s hapless human, husband, Darren, aka Derwood. When will it hit our screens? That’s what we’d like to know?

Jen isn’t giving anything away on this one.
Jennifer Garner single again
Is Jennifer Garner headed for the single bars again? Last year she split with hubby Scott Foley, whose career just happened to be taking a downturn at the time, then weeks later she revealed that her new lover was none other than Aliasco-star Michael Vartan. The couple was pleased when their relationship become public knowledge, as it meant they didn’t have to hide it any more. Jennifer said at the time: “Of course Michael and I are dating, it’s so new and exciting.” Apparently love in the public eye is a little too much for the the star, as IMDB.com now reports that the two have broken up due to the pressure of celebrity. One friend revealed: “Jennifer has been telling people she and Michael broke up.” But according the New York Post a spokeswoman for Jennifer has denied the couple have broken up. Guess we have to wait to see who is telling the truth on this one!

The blushing bride
Aguilera secretly engaged to marry
Christina Aguilera, 22, looks set to follow in girl-pal Britney Spears? footsteps and run off to Las Vegas for a quickie in the Chapel of Love. But who is the mystery man that has captured Aguilera?s heart? The young miss has been dating 27-year-old, Jordan Bratman, who works for her management company, for seven months. Now it seems the couple has decided to tie the knot although their marital plans were meant to be a secret. Jordan?s granny let it slip to reporters on Tuesday. “Jordan asked her in Los Angeles,” said 72-year-old Sally Bratman. “He called me and told me two days ago. I’m very happy they are engaged. His mum and dad are very happy too. I don’t know when the wedding will be – soon, hopefully.” Aguilera is already sporting an engagement ring, she said. “They have a ring and she’s worn it. I think it has a diamond in it, but I haven’t seen it myself.”

Britney Smells

Britney Smells

Britney fresh
Major cosmetics house Elizabeth Arden is set to create a signature fragrance for pop star Britney Spears! This is the first step for Britney in realising another lifelong dream, to have her own range of skincare and cosmetics. Could be a somewhat risky move for Arden, who are famous for their more sophisticated scents and mature tastes. The company also created a best-selling signature fragrance brand for another infamous diva, Elizabeth Taylor. Our advice, don’t name the fragrance after your latest single, Toxic.

Once more with feeling?
Lisa Marie feels nothing for Jacko
Lisa-Marie Presley has spilled the beans on her short-lived marriage to Michael Jackson! Appearing on Andrew Denton‘s Enough Rope programme on the ABC, Presley revealed she felt powerless in the relationship and soon realised that she was just “part of a machine.” Asked how she felt about Jackson now, Presley replied: “It’s really bizarre, I feel nothing.” A bizarre end to a bizarre relationship…

“No more fur,” says Liza
Fur fury for Liza Minnelli
And speaking of bizarre, Liza Minnelli has revealed that her taut-faced former husband David Gest made her wear real fur coats against her will! The New York Post reported that while the star prefers to fake it, she wore real fur at the insistence of her estranged husband. Minnelli offended animal rights group PETA, whom she has allegedly been a supporter of for the past 10 years. When asked to explain her change of heart, she replied “It was David. I prefer fake, but he insisted I put on the real thing. He was horrible. I’ll only ever wear fake from now on.”

Poor Andre
Empty seats for Andre
Pint-sized ex-pat Peter Andre is having a hard time kick-starting his pop career back in the UK. His 19-date Mysterious tour is not selling well, with one venue revealing it had only sold 17 tickets to the event in the first two weeks. A source told UK paper The Sunday Mirror that “Peter’s a bit upset by it all. He’s been really upbeat about his pop career.” Spin-doctors for Andre have replied to the criticism admitting that some venues may not sell all available tickets, adding “We’re really pleased with ticket sales.”

Stop Press- Britney Doesn’t Suck

Crossroads

One of the stars ? and that fact that she is not made to carry the entire film is probably one of the things that saves her ? is a toothy, titsy Britney Spears. I can?t help thinking that had she been a fabulous nobody rather than one of the world?s biggest-earning iconic pop-divas, Britney would have made an impression on viewers of this light as air road trip as a confident and dare I say credible actress. I?m not talking Academy Award performances here, but I have I have a confession to make. Britney did not suck nearly as much as you would have thought/hoped.

Her portrayal of a virginal high school graduate determined to ditch her one horse town in favour of a recording career in LA is hardly a stretch for Ms Spears. But this is the beauty of Crossroads and ultimately the reason why she doesn?t suck in this film in the way that her singing sisters ? Madonna, Mariah et al, have done in theirs.

The casting gods have shone on Britney and her modest acting skills are shown in a favourable, flattering light. Despite this, critics have been primed to pounce on this, the latest crossover of a singing starlet into the world of celluloid. And had I only stayed to watch the first five minutes of this warm and fuzzy little number, I too could have drawn some scathing conclusions.

The action commences with Britney karaoke-ing along to a Madonna song, soupspoon as microphone in hand, writhing and bucking her taut, brown, underwear adorned body on the bed. You could be forgiven for thinking that this was the start of a very different kind of film?

But Crossroads isn?t a different kind of film at all. It is a light, quasi-wholesome, sometimes funny teen film exploring, though for the most part superficially, the issues of friendship, first love, sex and its consequences. It?s not the kind of film you?re going to want to rush out and see right this second, but if you happen to be caught at the crossroads, well, that might not be such a bad thing?
