Nowadays, Justin Bieber, Lindsay Lohan, and Charlie Sheen embody the idea of the debauched celebrity. However, history is full of famous faces who excelled in the field of outrageousness and today’s attention junkies ain’t got nothin’ on them! Here are the top 5 most eccentric, exciting and downright embarrassing historical celebrities.

5. Emperor Caligula
Caligula was an insane Roman Emperor with a reputation for self-absorption, fits of anger and killing for amusement. He was accused of incest with his sisters and prostituting them to other men. Once, at a set of games he was presiding over, he ordered the guards to force a large section of the crowd into the arena to be eaten by wild animals. His reason? There were no criminals to be prosecuted – and he was bored. Unsurprisingly, he was assassinated.
4. Loi Chan
A notorious cross-dressing buccaneer, Loi Chan was known as Queen of the Macao Pirates, terrorising the waters around Hong Kong in the 1920’s. She garnered fame and wealth by pillaging ships and kidnappings. If the family of the hostage refused to pay up, she would send them their loved-one’s finger or ear as a warning. She encouraged her fame and allowed a journalist to follow her and write up her exploits. She never spoke directly to the men on her crew and they were also banned from her cabin (because she was a classy biatch). It is unknown exactly how she died, but rumour has it that she attacked a torpedo squadron during the Chinese-Japanese War and was killed in battle. What a way to go!
3. Giacomo Casanova
A man so notorious for his torrid affairs that his name is now the (un)official definition of ‘playboy’. His existence was driven by his sexual desires. Not content with the standard pattern of adultery, he adored drama and had a kink for complicated plots, heroes and villains, and gallantry. His usual liaison involved an innocent woman with a domineering husband, whom he would comfort, eventually seduce, and once he grew bored would insist on his own unworthiness and attach her to a better man. The secret to his success with the ladies? Gratitude and (in a funny sort of way), respect. Delicious.
2. Betty “Tiger Woman” May
The infamous prostitute who trod the boards of the Café Royal in the 1920’s. She met a gentleman who guaranteed her a dancing job in Bordeaux, but attempted to assault her instead. Rather than succumb, Betty fought tooth and nail, eventually sticking a knife in his neck and beating him over the head with a pair of metal tongs. She ran and joined the violent L’Apache Gang in Paris. With them, she learnt some mean knife-fighting skills. This talent for hand-to-hand combat earned her the nickname “Tiger Woman.”
And now, the undisputed top-runner…
1. Lord Byron
Born in 1788, Byron was a romantic poet and is considered the first rock star. After his grand tour of Europe (where he entertained a titillating homosexual affair with an Albanian warlord), he rose to overnight success at the age of 24 with his narrative poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. His fame grew as he churned out more and more popular poems; Don Juan was considered dangerous for young ladies to read because of its explicit content.
However, he was most famous for his ill-disguised affairs with both men and women, including a salacious sexual relationship with his half-sister, Augusta Leigh. The depression he suffered because he could not be with her, along with his monumental gambling debts, led him to alcoholism, opium abuse and epileptic fits. Word of the Augusta tryst began to spread and Byron was exiled from England. He travelled Europe for eight years and died of a fever fighting for Greek independence at the age of 36. A true (if debauched) supernova; burn bright, die young.

We’ve all been there, wondering just how that celebrity became so damn rich and famous. They appear to have fluked their way to the top, without any real confirmation of their talent when first discovered, but were picked out for being good looking, a gift from the Gods of genetics.
We say fluked because these people have played the game of chance and won, think of the world of celebrity like playing a game on SuperCasino – when you win big you go all the way.
So who has fluked their way to the top and is now living a lavish life after seemingly doing, well…not very much to get there?
We’re not saying Charlize isn’t a fine actress, you just have to watch the 2003 movie Monster to witness her talent, but Theron wasn’t having much luck making it in Hollywood when she initially started out. She was actually discovered in a bank, shouting at a poor assistant behind the counter, who wouldn’t or couldn’t for some reason pay out money to her. A talent agent enjoyed her making a scene so much he gave her his business card and the rest, as they say, is history.
Seagal is best known for his highflying, highly dramatic (and just a tad ridiculous) action movies, where he spends a good portion of a film kicking the bad guys in the face, repeatedly. Steven is actually a master in aikido and because of his skill in the martial art was discovered by talent agent Michael Ovitz. It’s been claimed that Ovitz wanted to prove a point, that he could make anyone famous and so took Seagal to Warner Brothers Studios. The guys there were so impressed with his martial arts skills they let him choose a film to make, from a pile of scripts. Thanks WB.
We could reel off a long list of the Keeping up with the Kardashians ‘cast’, who have fluked their way to the top, but for now we’ll stick with Scott Disick. His fame has come mostly from dating Kourtney Kardashian and their public spats and constant arguing. Their toxic relationship keeps viewers coming back for more and constantly puts Scott in the spotlight. From his exposure on the show Scott now does paid nightclub appearances and public events and revels in the party lifestyle his fame has brought him, much to Kourtney’s displeasure.
Whilst his talent as a chef can’t be questioned Oliver found fame by pure luck. A BBC Camera crew who were filming Christmas at the River Café, where he worked, spotted him in the background making pasta. Apparently they liked his look and pasta-making skills so much that later that year his show The Naked Chef debuted, along with a cookbook. Right place, right time.
Bieber is a celeb treated much like Marmite, you either love him or hate him. It’s usually the latter, because only 10 year old girls love Bieber. We think. But the Biebs was actually discovered through a stroke of luck, after crooning to a small fan base on Youtube. Apparently his current manager saw a video of the boy popstar and contacted his mum about working with him. So thanks to a video camera and a floppy haircut, Bieber is now available for us all to enjoy.
Marrying Wayne Rooney is one life decision Coleen will probably never regret. From her marriage she has launched perfumes, a clothing line and has reportedly jetted off on ten holidays this year alone. How the other half live, eh?
Talk about the epitome of fashion news and the latest celebrity gossip! Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner, (aka Sansa Stark) will be the face of Karen Millen’s 2015 Autumn/Winter launch. I’ve just had a sneak peak at the fashion (which I’ll share) and campaign mini movie entitled The Journey shot by Photographer and director Glen Luchford.
The campaign centers around Turner. She’s supported by an entourage of handpicked British beauties, Lara Mullen, Rosie Tapner and Brogan Loftus. These young, vivacious women have been exquisitely styled by Katy England who breathes life into the entire collection.
Presented is an eclectic mixture of high-low, trend-led, London inspired pieces. These are complimented with some stunning seasonal wardrobe staples. Seriously the handbags and heeled boots are to die for! As always their objective is to design and create effortless fashion for modern intelligent, urban woman. That sounds very much like a majority of our readers?!
There’s an opulent mixture of day, night, casual, office and evening ware. KM has used a variety of fabrics in plain and feminine patterns, creating perfectly contoured shirts, tops, jeans and elegant skirts. There’s also a selection of tailored pants and an array of coats and jackets available in long and short varieties. To complete the AW15 collection faux furs and flowing scarfs have been included to ward off the winter chills. Plus they haven’t forgotten their iconic bikers jacket. So, basically all the must have’s for a stylish Autumn / Winter wardrobe have been included.
The KM brand ensures exceptional quality with first class craftsmanship. Directed by CCO Gemma Metheringham each piece is designed, cut and finished in KM’s design studio. These remain reflective of KM’s origin which remains based in Shoreditch London. The brand also dedicates support to emerging fashion talent with their graduate protégé scheme. Participants receive valuable experience and in return KM inspires innovation by encouraging new industry professionals.
Speaking of emerging talent and industry professionals lets get back to the celebrity goss! Turner was cast for the role of Sansa Stark at age 13 after being handpicked from her school. She remains with Game of Thrones as it enters it’s fifth season. The promo has just been released and fans can’t wait until it airs in the US on April 12th. Granted Turner’s had a very different role with KM. In fact it’s probably as far from Winterfell and Kings landing entire as you can possibly get! Quite a transformation isn’t it!
As well as being the face of KM, Turner’s been a very busy young lady since Game of Thrones aired last season. She’s rapidly made a leap from small to large screen. She’s recently concluded an action comedy called Barley Lethal with Hailee Steinfeld, Jessica Alba and Samuel L. Jackson. Plus she scored a lead role in an independent film called Alone with Mark Kassen and Ray Liotta.
She’s certainly been mixing it up with some film favorites there. No wonder she’s recently been signed to play Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse. Turner will act along side one film’s hottest honeys; Channing Tatum and of course Australia’s favorite X-Man, Hugh Jackman will be there. The film is currently in pre-production and is due for release in 2016. Looks like this busy talented young beauty is one up and coming celebrity to keep an eye on!

It’s awards season once again – and how quickly does it roll around? The Golden Globe awards are well under way and the stand-out colour of the event was overwhemingly… WHITE! Despite the cool temperatures and the very real fear every woman faces when wearing the tone (and then possibly her red wine), the A-listers seemed to agree that it was their number 1 choice.
As always, some wore it well and others, well, not so good. Here are our favourites:
Guiliana Rancic and Rosamund Pike
Kate Hudson and Reese Witherspoon
Who do you think was the best dressed at this year’s Golden Globes?
