This Week’s Best Celebrity Style

Plenty of gorgeous red carpet dresses this week, from Naomi Campbell in gold to Mindy Kaling in an oh-so-chic little lack dress. Enjoy the week’s best celebrity style.

Vanessa Hudgens is stunning in Gatsby-inspired Monique Lhuillier dress at the screening of her latest film Gimme Shelter at NYC’s Museum of Modern Art.

Co-star Rosario Dawson also made our best celebrity style list, in a monochromatic Antonio Berardi illusion dress. Get her vintage faux bob hair tutorial here!

Naomi Campbell looked regal in a statuesque Michael Kors gown at the UK National Television Awards in London.

At the 2014 Elle’s Women in Television Celebration in West Hollywood, Mindy Kaling rocked a Badgley Mischka LBD. That fuchsia lipstick is just the right pop of colour to elevate this look from classic-but-safe to super stylish.

Emily Rossum was pretty in pale peach and white in this pleated J Mendel dress.

5 Frocks Every Woman Needs

I’m a dress girl – I think you’re a dress girl or you’re not. But I’m on a one-woman mission to convince those who are not dress-girls just how awesome they can be.

With so much celebrity dress inspiration out there, start the new year with a wardrobe edit and nail down dresses that flatter and can mix-and-match with other pieces. Choosing the right dress is all about finding one that flatters your shape, so think about your body parts you like the most, and find dresses that show those off. Got a neat waist? Look for dresses that come in at the waist to show it off. Got banging legs? Mini dresses all the way for you.

There really are so many amazing dresses out there, so I’ve put together a list of the five dresses every woman needs in her wardrobe.

Cue Cotton Gloss Dress, RRP $239

1. The work dress
Let’s get the classic out of the way first (before we get to all the colour and print and fun!). Every girl should have just one dress like this in their wardrobe – it’s like your ‘break in case of emergency’ dress for job interviews, important work meetings, your partner’s work do’s – and it’s a good staple to have on hand for weddings and funerals if need be.

It should be classic, fitted and preferably either black, grey of navy (depending on what suits you best). Match this dress to your body shape correctly, and it will live in your wardrobe for years.

Sheike Ambiance Maxi Dress, RRP $149.95

2. The maxi dress
Yes, you can wear a maxi dress (and who cares if your husband doesn’t like it, your girlfriends will think you totally rock!)

Maxi dresses are the most versatile dresses you can wear in the warmer months. Going down the beach? Pop it over your swimmers, add a straw hat and thongs and off you go. Heading to a friend’s BBQ? Or to the pub? Change your thongs out for wedges, add a stack of bangles and a statement necklace, apply a bright lippie and you’re set.

3. The sun dress
Casual, flirty and fun! Look for a dress in a bright colour and print and you will feel like summer as soon as you put it on. Go for a style and print that suits you and your personality.

Again, like the maxi – dress it up or down depending on where you are wearing it and you’ll live in this all summer long.

Yarra Trail Dress, RRP $99.95

The Ultimate Black Dress from Sacha Drake, RRP $289

4. The multi-wear dress
Aussie designer Sacha Drake has this type of dress down pat. From her famous Ultimate Black Dress which you can wear over 20 ways, to her new additions, the Grecian Dress and the Myrcella dress.

The biggest advantage of a multi-wear dress is that you choose the ways that suit your shape.

Boohoo.com Rhian sequin shift dress RRP $75

5. The party dress
You can have fun with this dress! Go all out – sequins, colour, sparkle – whatever takes your fancy.

I think we dress down too much as a society these days. Women used to really dress up to go out; now jeans and a sparkly top is seen as acceptable party attire. I’m going to change that, and you are going to help me buy buying a fabulous party dress for your next special occasion.

Have I got you convinced yet? Frocks really can solve almost any style situation, you just need to find the right one. So get shopping!

Fashionistas – what’s your all-time favourite dress?

Caitlin Harrison is an Aussie blogger, personal stylist (and self-confessed shoe addict) living in Auckland. She started her fashion and beauty blog, Chasing Cait, in 2011, when her partner told her to stop talking about style and write it down. With over 10 years in the fashion industry under her belt, Caitlin has become an expert in helping women find their own sense of style, and in particular, dressing for their body shape. Chasing Cait is written in a way that makes fashion and style seem easy to the everyday woman, no matter what your personal style, bank balance, or lifestyle.

The Week’s Best Celebrity Fashion

Lace is one of the hottest celebrity fashion trends this week, while monochrome continues to be the season’s biggest colour statement.

Camila Alves stunned with her winning red carpet fashion sense at the New York premiere of hubbie Matthew McConaughey’s new movie, The Wolf Of Wall Street. The sexy red lace dress is by Armani Prive, paired beautifully with strappy nude Brian Atwood heels.

There are never enough good things to say about Helen Mirren, as chic as ever in a black lace dress with blood-red lips at the American Cinematheque Award Show.

Anna Kendrick was a golden goddess in a strapless J. Mendel gown at TNT’s Christmas in Washington 2013 party.

Lea Michele looked gorgeous is a black cutaway Three Floor dress when she hosted an evening of shopping at the Switch Boutique in LA to benefit Chrysalis, which helps the poor and homeless find jobs.

Last week we told you monochrome is one of the biggest celebrity fashion trends right now, and it continues to dominate as seen on Zoe Saldana’s chic outfit at the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards Nominations.

This Week’s Best Celebrity Style

We’ve noticed two celebrity style trends this week: rich ruby reds and plums (here’s looking at you Naomi Campbell and Katy Perry), and plenty of chic black and white. Which style trend is your favourite?

Naomi Campbell looked regal in a rich plum Zac Posen gown with billowing cape at a photocall in Sydney for The Face Australia.

Seems like rich reds are the colour du jour, with Katy Perry wearing a luxurious ruby red gown and cape at the UNICEF Snowflake Ball in NYC (where she was bestowed a humanitarian award).

Angie Harmon also looked incredibly glamorous at the UNICEF Snowflake Ball, flashing a little side boob in her black and white Angel Sanchez gown.

Also at the UNICEF Snowflake Ball, Christina Ricci in a sexy Carolina Herrara off-the-shoulder gown with cheetah-print skirt.

Julianna Margulies channeled Audrey Hepburn in monochrome chic at a fundraiser for paediatric AIDS in New York.

Marion Cotillard always has incredible celebrity style, here in a striped Dior dress with strappy sandals at the Marrakech Film Festival, accompanied by Martin Scorcese…

…Another day, another stunning Dior gown.

If Keira Knightley’s dress looks familiar – it should! It’s her Chanel wedding dress recycled for Tuesday’s SeriousFun Children’s Network gala in London. More celebrity dress recycling, please!

The Best Celebrity Fashion at the British Fashion Awards 2013

Britain’s biggest style icons took over the red carpet last night at the British Fashion Awards 2013 held at the London Colisseum. And even though it’s winter in London right now, there were a number of trends we can borrow for our summer, from colourful maxi dresses to feminine mini dresses.

Here are our picks for the best celebrity fashion at the BFAs.

Kate Moss wore an Alexander McQueen leather dress, Marc Jacobs coat and Christian Louboutin pumps. She took home the Special Recognition Award, saying the accolade was “surreal”.

Alexa Chung paired an adorable Stella McCartney mini dress with black satin ankle strap wedges and red lipstick – zero jewellery!

Sienna Miller and fiance Tom Sturridge both wore Burberry – isn’t that emerald green gown straight out of The Beautiful and the Damned?

Gwyneth Paltrow looked understated in a pretty Prada dress.

Rita Ora vamped it up in Vivienne Westwood.

Golden Globes After-Party Best + Worst Dressed

The fashion highs and lows continued at the Golden Globes after-parties – with one Aussie celeb rebounding from her awards’ disaster, while other celebs continued to plummet in the style stakes.

Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom

Love MIranda’s shimmery calf-length Dolce & Gabbana dress.

Elle Macpherson

We weren’t a fan of her Golden Globes bridezilla gown, yet Elle simply glowed at the after-party in a glittering gold fishtail dress.

Jessica Alba

One of our best dressed favourites keeps it up in this simple yet sparkly strapless dress.

Rachel Zoe

A whimsical, Heidi-esque dress is ruined by Rachel’s angry zombie stare. Even Victoria Beckham is smiling these days.

Kim Kardashian

Even Ricky Gervais’ opening gag poking fun at her and her 72-day marriage couldn’t stop Kim showing up to the after-party, over-dressed in serious black.

Erin Wasson

Oh, brother. Erin Wasson’s stick-thin frame puts us off our dinner in this barely there dress (if you can call it a dress?)

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay’s pale skin clashes in this nude apricot dress gown thing.
