Celebrity Style: Whitney Port

Fashion designer, reality TV star, actress and sometimes-model Whitney Port is one of our go-to fashionistas for celebrity style inspiration. Her pulled-together image, chic style, and perfectly groomed hair and makeup makes her a true fashion icon. But Port’s celebrity style isn’t just for those with celebrity-sized wallets. We walk you through five of Whitney’s most iconic looks.

Pretty Patterns

Whitney has a whimsical, slightly boho style that puts patterns at center stage. She likes to mix up contrasting patterns for an attention-grabbing outfit, but for relaxed days keeps it streamlined in a head-to-tie pattern, perfect for spring maxi dresses.

Tailored Shorts

Another mainstay of Whitney’s celebrity style is her tailored short obsession. Port is frequently seen sporting a range of hues, cuts, and fabrics. One thing her shorts always have in common? A perfect, not-too-tight cut that always says ‘classy’ instead of ‘sleazy.’

Boyfriend Jeans

One of Whitney’s closet staples is a pair of worn-in, well-loved boyfriend jeans. Whitney clearly has several pairs in her wardrobe, ranging from fitted to baggy. She often pairs them with a chic stiletto, tank top and blazer, which goes a long way in polishing off this grungy garment.

Tailored blazers are another must-have in Whitney’s wardrobe — she styles them over loose dresses for formal events, but also dresses them down with tailored trousers or flowy shorts for day-time looks.

Edgy Leather Jackets

Finally, one of Whitney’s most iconic wardrobe essentials is a great leather jacket. Be it brown or black, bomber or motorcycle, Whitney always knows how to work the look, even on the red carpet with olive silk pants and a cami.

Independent Spirit Awards Best Red Carpet Dresses

It’s been one hell of an awards season with some of the best red carpet dresses in Hollywood history, and the final award show before the Oscars – the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards at Santa Monica on March 1st – was no different. Here are our favourite Independent Spirit Awards celebrity fashion.

Julie Delpy is simply stunning in this belted Kelly green gown – we hope she wins for Best Adapted Screenplay for Before Midnight at the Oscars!

We love Reese Witherspoon in this Giambattista Valli Couture top and skirt. And we really want those Louboutins!

Cate Blanchett is the queen of the red carpet in this unique Roksanda Ilincic dress. We love that she hasn’t worn a conventional gown all awards season!

Rosario Dawson is pure elegance in her nude and black Narciso Rodriguez dress.

Kristen Bell is cute and chic in her royal blue Reem Acra dress with lace detailing and sky-high Louboutin heels.

Best Pre-Oscars Parties Celebrity Fashion

As we countdown to the Oscars, let’s take a look at some of the incredible pre-Oscars parties celebrity fashion from Cate Blanchett to Anne Hathaway.

Taylor Swift looked adorable in this white lace Oscar de la Renta dress at the super-exclusive Weinstein Company’s pre-Oscars party at the Montage Beverly Hills.

Model Petra Nemcova injected some much-needed colour in her radiant yellow silk gown.

Cate Blanchett continued her pre-Oscars fashion winning streak in this Stella McCartney jumpsuit and shoes at the Sony Pictures Classics 2014 Oscar Dinner at STK Steakhouse, here with Blue Jasmine costar Sally Hawkins.

Sienna Miller wore this simple apple green Chanel dress to the Chanel & Charles Finch Pre-Oscar Dinner at L.A.’s Madeo Restaurant.

Also at the same party, Anne Hathaway rocked this short Chanel LBD with little more than a slick of red lipstick.

Get Kate Moss’ Celebrity Style For Less

We’re still obsessed with Kate Moss’ celebrity style. Anytime we get into a fashion rut, we just browse through the Kate Moss fashion archives to find a look that’s fresh, a new way of wearing a wardrobe staple, or accessorising a boring outfit. After 26 years’ modelling, she remains a fashion icon with no indication of slowing down. Let’s take a walk down memory lane and see how you can recreate La Moss’ celebrity style for less.

The leopard print coat
One of Moss’ most iconic looks, her leopard print coat has been a favourite over the years – she even wore it on her recent 40th birthday celebrations. Whether you pair it with jeans and a fitted jumper, or over a little black dress, Moss has made this a wardrobe staple.

Get the look for less: Topshop Faux Fur Animal Print Coat, $168.

The kimono jacket
We love the addition of a floral kimono jacket to a pair of dark denim skinny jeans and basic singlet top. Topped off with layered necklaces and olive ankle boots makes the look completely unique.

Get the look for less: Dark Base Floral Tassel Kimono, $24.99.

The tailored blazer
Moss adds sexiness and elegance to an all-black outfit. The skin-tight leather pants and tailored blazer with satin lapels, with sheer chemise underneath, is a vampish take on the classic suit. It would be easy to over-accesorise, but Moss keeps it simple and still a statement with her hair pulled back, black satin clutch and pointed stilettos.

Get the look for lessBardot Bling Blazer, $80, and Anarchy Leggings, $99.95.

The wide leg jeans
She might have been responsible for ushering in the skinny jean trend, but in typical Moss fashion, she’ll often broke from the pack choosing this more relaxed bohemian chic look. Here she pairs a simple boat neck t-shirt with wide leg jeans, thick belt, open-toe sands and a simple purse. Let your hair down and enjoy the sunshine with this carefree look. Get the look for less: LTB Roxy Jean, $74.95 and Cotton On Desire Fleck T-Shirt, $14.95.

The chiffon dress
Moss is never afraid to take fashion risks, and always pulls it off. On paper, it might sound like an emerald green chiffon dress would not pair well with a fitted leather jacket, but on Moss, it looks incredible. Next time you wear a feminine evening dress, take inspiration from Moss and pair it with a sleek biker jacket and bold accessories.

This Week’s Best Red Carpet Dresses

Plenty of amazing red carpet dresses this week in the lead-up to New York Fashion Week and the Oscars – and Cate Blanchett continues to dominate the best celebrity fashion with not one but two incredible looks.

Gwyneth Paltrow sparkled in a glam 70’s-inspired purple gown at the Goldene Kamera Awards in Berlin.

Keri Russell was the epitome of casual-chic at the Writers Guild Awards pairing an Isabel Marant tee with a peekaboo black bra, Givenchy skirt and Giuseppe Zannoti shoes.

Cate Blanchett was luminous in Maison Martin Margiela at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where she picked up yet another award for her role in Blue Jasmine, taking home the 2014 Outstanding Performer of the Year Award.

…and yet again at the NYC premiere of her latest film Monuments Men in Proenza Schouler. Love that side bun.

Olivia Palermo’s Celebrity Style

We have serious fashion envy every time we see Olivia Palermo hit the streets. And with New York Fashion Week just around the corner, we’ve decided to take a look at this uptown it-girl’s best celebrity style looks from classic skinny jeans and blazers, to – and how you can steal her style for less.

Statement jewellery
Olivia is a huge fan of statement jewellery – famous for her chunky necklaces bringing attention to her beautiful neck. But make sure you balance the outfit – a statement necklace only works if you’re wearing a simple tee, jumper or dress underneath to make it pop. Luckily there is fantastic costume jewellery at Sportsgirl and Topshop that look just as glam as Olivia’s.

Tailored blazer
Olivia loves finishing off an outfit with a blazer, whether it’s a floral summer dress or skinny jeans and a tee. It gives all her outfits that elegant and classy finish. Look for a basic fitted tailored blazer in black or white for less at Zara or Mango.

Skinny jeans
Olivia wears skinny jeans to every occasion: a day in the city, fashion week, parties, or at nights out with her gorgeous German supermodel-fiancé Johannes Huebl. Look for a pair of skinny jeans that are not too low on the waist and comfortable. Jeggings are a great alternative too.

White shirt
Olivia has taken the classic white shirt and reimagined it – whether she’s wearing it with jeans, shorts, tucked into maxi skirts or with a knee-length skirt, it always looks fresh and feminine. Add some bright statement jewellery and a colourful bag to complete the look. We love white shirtswith a little lycra stretch for a great fit (check out Witchery and David Lawrence), or borrow you’re boyfriend’s.

The Little Black Dress is a wardrobe staple, and to get one in true Olivia-style, think Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina – elegant, chic and timeless. Accessorise with simple jewellery and your favourite heels. Portmans and Seduce are a great place to pick up an LBD without the designer price tag.

Olivia is tiny so is often in sky-high heels, but even fashionistas need to be comfortable every now and then. And who said you can’t look stylish in flats? Swap your everyday ballerinas for loafers, which look fab with jeans, a relaxed shirt and sunglasses.

Every it-girl knows sunglasses are your best friend when out and about. Olivia often steps out in big-oversizes sunglasses to frame her heart-shapred face. Splurge on Dior or Tom Ford sunglasses – Olivia’s favourite labels for shades – an investment you’ll wear for years.

Do you love Olivia Palermo’s style?

How to Get Celebrity Style For Less

Whether it’s Nicole Richie’s boho chic you covet or Alexa Chung’s street style you want to steal, forget the designer price tag – we show you how to get the hottest celebrity style for less, all under $60.

Emma Watson’s animal print romper and floppy hat
Emma Watson looked so adorable in her animal print romper at Coachella last year. No need to hire a stylist to have amazing celebrity style. Take inspiration from Emma and accessorise your romper with a floppy hat, cross body bag, chunky gold belt and vintage necklace.
Get the look for lessGuess Abstract Dye Romper ($49.97) and Princess Poly Endless Sun Hat ($50).

Michelle Williams’ preppy printed pants
She might stay out of the spotlight, but Michelle Williams is always on top of the celebrity style game when she’s running errands on the streets of NYC. Michelle tends to go for a preppy-chic look and one of our favourites is her printed cropped pants paired with a chambray shirt, basic navy cardigan and dark studded loafers for an outfit that is casual, yet cool.
Get the look for less: We love Glassons Daisy Flower Printed Pants ($29.99) and Cotton On Giselle Cotton Shirt ($29.95).

Alexa Chung’s printed skirt
Alexa Chung is the princess of casual-chic street style, knowing just how to update unique vintage finds with the latest trends. We love how she’s combined a bold vintage print skirt with a simple grey jumper with a preppy white collar. No need for heels here – Alexa updates her usual ballerinas with black bow flats for a fun style that’s perfect for brunch with friends.
Get the look for less: Goddess Print A-Line Midi Skirt ($59.97).

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s leather pants and striped tee
While we won’t be flying in leather pants anytime soon (hard to squeeze in and out of economy seats in skin-tight leathers), we can still take inspiration from Rosie Huntington-Whiteley chic airport style. On a recent trip, the British babe rocked sleek leather pants and a striped tee for a casual style that was offset by brown suede heels. Although the outfit looked too casual for the runway, it was truly complete with the burgundy fedora that worked to discrete her identity.
Get the look for less: Wonder NY PU Jeggings ($48.96) and Dotti Stripey Daze Tee ($29.95).

Nicole Richie’s kimino jacket
Nicole Richie is every boho babe’s source of inspiration. But a vintage wardrobe like Nicole’s doesn’t come cheap.  This incredible fringed kimono is such a wow piece to pair with flared jeans. Luckily we’ve found a way to steal Nicole’s style for less.
Get the look for lessIvy Floral Print Chiffon Long Kimono ($40).

The Week’s Best Red Carpet Dresses

Forget floor-length, this week’s celebrity style is all about chic short dresses, with everyone from Jessica Alba to Reese Witherspoon all showing off some leg. Here’s our pick of the best red carpet dresses.

Jessica Alba is sweet as pie at the Hollywood Stands Up to Cancer Event in Hollywood in this white broderie anglaise Ralph Lauren dress, but vamps it up with a slick of dark plum lips.

Fellow guest Drew Barrymore is adorable as always in this Giuletta dress with J Crew heels. High street shoes – love it!

Reese Witherspoon usually plays it safe but showed us some serious cleavage in her tangerine Roland Mouret dress while co-hosting the event with hubbie Jim Toth. Love the pewter Jimmy Choo heels.

OK, it’s not technically a dress, but few women can pull off a red carpet tuxedo like Anne Hathaway (hers is by Viktor & Rolf).

Cameron Diaz rugged up against the brutal cold in New York for the opening of the flagship Tag Heuer store in an elegant black and white coat with opaque tights and black heels.

Jennifer Connelley rocked a Dolce & Gabbana lace LBD for her appearance on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, paired with a tousled bob and classic red lipstick.

It was a sea of glitter at the Grammys 2014, with everyone from Taylor Swift to Amy Kendrick wearing gorgeous shades of gold and platinum. But can we just stop and talk about how Beyonce stole the show in her dress? Here are our best Grammys red carpet dresses.

Even before Beyonce got on stage for that performance of Drunk in Love with hubbie Jay Z, she stunned everyone in her white Michael Costello gown complete with sexy lace and plunging back.

Amy Kendrick presented an award with Pharrell wearing an Azzaro dress that was just-the-right-side of evealing.

British songstress Rita Ora bucked the long red carpet dresses trend and chose a knee-length green-gold Lanvin dress.

And congrats to 12 Years a Slave and Gravity who both won best film, a first ever tie!

Helen Mirren has the best celebrity style of the night in her glittering Elie Saab gown.

We’re kind of obsessed with how gorgeous Gillian Anderson is. The elegant grey lace dress is one thing, but just look at that hair and makeup!

Claire Danes is adorable in a chic Dior dress and gold Christian Louboutin heels.

We couldn’t help but include this photo of 12 Years a Slave stars  Brad Pitt and Chiwetel Ejiofor, because, hey, this is how all men should rock the red carpet. And hello, Brad Pitt’s new hair cut? Only Brad could get away with it!

The Best SAG Awards Red Carpet Dresses

So much celebrity fashion inspiration at the SAG Awards 2014. Sure, American Hustle may have won big, but the best red carpet dresses were the real winners of the night.

Lupita Nyong’o continues her fashion winning streak in electric blue Gucci.

Jennifer Lawrence didn’t just blow us away in this glimmering Dior column dress, but she also coined the term “armpit vaginas”.

Isla Fisher is the epitome of old Hollywood style in her stunning Oscar de la Renta and bombshell hair.

Love that Kerry Washington wore a Prada skirt and crop top showing off her pregnant belly.

Claire Danes went for dark and sexy in this mesh and holographic sequin Vionnet dress.

Mindy Kaling is so elegant in this sexy navy David Meister gown. Love the gold accessories.

Most of us could not get away with pairing a pale pink silk gown (here, by Givenchy) against pale skin. Except we’re not Cate Blanchett, and she can get away with pretty much anything.

Oprah looks stunning in a off-the-shoulder Badgley Mischka dress with broach detail (and wasn’t she fantastic in The Butler?).

Best Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet Dresses

Another day, another awards show, but who cares when there are so many gorgeous red carpet dresses? We break down our favourite celebrity style at today’s 2014 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

Worst Golden Globes Red Carpet Dresses

So many amazing red carpet dresses at the Golden Globes 2014…and yet, so many shockers, and surprisingly, from some of our favourite celebrities. Let’s take a look at some of the fashion disasters…

What just happened? Who styled this? You’ve got the start of a business-casual, boyfriend shirt-inspired outfit by Dolce & Gabbana. Then, her stylist added a feminine sparkly diamante belt, which does nothing to accentuate her waist. Finally, a 60’s beehive to complete the discombobulated look.

Zoe Saldana is one of the hottest actresses right now, so I guess she was going for edgy when she chose to wear this Prabal Gurung 80’s prom dress. She’s not the only one who had a Prabal Gurung disaster tonight…

Sandra Bullock has been scoring a lot of fashion wins lately, so it’s sad she chose this Prabal Gurung satin mullet dress. The colour combination doesn’t work, and the low cut doesn’t flatter either. And those pointy boobs remind us of Anne Hathaway’s 2014 pink Oscars dress. Not good.

Mila Kunis has worn some of the prettiest red carpet dresses, yet even she doesn’t love this Liberace-inspired look.

Uma Thurman seems to have lost her red carpet mojo. The black top and skirt don’t match, instead creating a jarring contrast. She looks severe and unsexy, which is unheard of for Uma.

We wanted to love anything that Jennifer Lawrence chose to wear to the Golden Globes. And from the thighs up, we get it. It’s Dior, it’s high fashion, but that white tulle skirt just looks cheap, like the Spotlight end of year offcuts. Also not a fan of the mismatched jewellery.

We can’t wait for season 2 of House of Cards, but Kate Mara’s Golden Globes J Mendel gown is hurting our eyes tonight. The bleached locks, the in-your-face boobs, the weird drape…so many better choices for this pretty young thing.

Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss sadly looks like she just woke up an hour before the Golden Globes. Her hair looks messy and her handkerchief tail J Mendel dress doesn’t flatter.

Hayden Panettiere debuted a new short haircut, sleeking it back – but it just looks like covering up a bad hair day. And we don’t like the dress either – remember when above-knee slits were big in the early 90’s? Yep, this looks feels just as outdated.

We’ve seen Emma Thompson rock the pre-Golden Globes parties in style, but sadly, she showed up wearing a rock-hard gold bodice that looks like it belongs on the set of 300, finished in a boring black skirt.

How to Choose the Perfect Summer Hat

We love hats, especially for summer – they’re a celebrity fashion favourite. They’re the perfect way to accessorise any outfit, from maxi dresses to denim cut-offs and t-shirts. It’s just not always easy finding the right style, so the fashionistas at Melbourne’s Uni Hill Factory Outlets have come to the rescue with their handy style tips.  The floppy hat Perfect for your bohemian-chic days when you let the hippy inside you venture out. Summer screams loose-fitted tops and maxi dresses, which work best with a wide, floppy hat. Be brave; opt for big styles and save your face from direct sun. Black and white continues to be a strong trend in celebrity fashion this week, with all black and all white outfits shining on the red carpet. But luckily for those that love colour there are dresses with bursts of gorgeous hues including vibrant yellows, dreamy plums and seafoam greens.

This Week’s Best Dressed Celebrity Style

From Amy Adams in picture-perfect plum to Jennifer Lawrence rocking cutting-edge Dior couture, this week’s red carpet has some serious best dressed contenders…

We started the week with The Governors Awards in Hollywood, and boy did it draw some incredible celebrity red carpet dresses.

Angelina Jolie was as beautiful as ever in her dramatic sparkly black Atelier Versace gown, taking home the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

We’re smitten with Jennifer Garner’s chic and feminine LBD by Dolce & Gabbana. Isn’t that neckline pretty?

Expect to see a lot more purple on the red carpet after Amy Adams’ strapless plum Vivienne Westwood gown.

But Raquel Welch was the real head-turner in her bombastic red figure-hugging dress. Can you believe she’s 73?

It was a busy week for the Hunger Games crew, continuing their whirlwind promotional world tour for the Catching Fire sequel, and Jennifer Lawrence stunned in this unique Dior creation. Perfect for the Paris premiere.

Another city, another Dior Haute Couture gown. We love the prom-inspired neckline and sexy billowing skirt worn over a black basque pulled together with a thick belt.

Meanwhile co-star Elizabeth Banks was radiant in this sculptured hot orange gown with sparkly embellishments at the L.A. premiere.

And if there’s any doubt purple is going to be a big fashion trend, here’s Girls’ star Allison Williams in a royal purple off-the-shoulder L’Wren Scott dress at the CNN Heroes: An All Star Tribute evening in NYC.

Need some Halloween outfit inspiration? Check out these Halloween costumes from your favourite celebrities including Fergie as Elvira and Kelly Osbourne as none other than Dame Edna!

Martha Stewart
Who else but Martha would step out as the Fairy Godmother…or should that be, the Fairy God-martha?

Sandra Bullock
Sandra took adorable three-year-old son Louis to a Halloween party dressed in matching skeleton outfits!

Fergie and Josh Duhamel
The new parents showed up at Kate Hudson’s celebrity Halloween extravaganza as Elvira and a character from the Rocky Horror Picture Show – perfect!

Paris Hilton
Paris showed up as Miley Cyrus in her now-infamous VMA outfit, complete with sticking her tongue out at any photo opportunity. Predictable, don’t you think?

Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris
Speaking of predictable, look who else dressed up as Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke – that’s right, Hugh Hefner and wife Crystal Harris. Hugh just looks like a creepy convict.

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell
How cute are these two? Goldie and Kurt turned up to daughter Kate’s Halloween party dressed as a grown-up Hansel and Gretel – complete with blonde braids and bonnet for Goldie, and lederhosen for Kurt.

Kelly Osbourne
Kelly is totally rocking this Halloween homage to Dame Edna!

Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady
The beautiful couple stepped out in Boston on Monday at a Halloween party dressed as Dorothy – complete with fake Toto in her basket – and the Cowardly Lion.

Look familiar? Snooki also dressed up as Dorothy, with fiance Jionni Lavalle kitting himself out as the Scarecrow and their baby boy Lorenzo dressed as the Cowardly Lion.

Golden Globes After-Party Best + Worst Dressed

The fashion highs and lows continued at the Golden Globes after-parties – with one Aussie celeb rebounding from her awards’ disaster, while other celebs continued to plummet in the style stakes.

Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom

Love MIranda’s shimmery calf-length Dolce & Gabbana dress.

Elle Macpherson

We weren’t a fan of her Golden Globes bridezilla gown, yet Elle simply glowed at the after-party in a glittering gold fishtail dress.

Jessica Alba

One of our best dressed favourites keeps it up in this simple yet sparkly strapless dress.

Rachel Zoe

A whimsical, Heidi-esque dress is ruined by Rachel’s angry zombie stare. Even Victoria Beckham is smiling these days.

Kim Kardashian

Even Ricky Gervais’ opening gag poking fun at her and her 72-day marriage couldn’t stop Kim showing up to the after-party, over-dressed in serious black.

Erin Wasson

Oh, brother. Erin Wasson’s stick-thin frame puts us off our dinner in this barely there dress (if you can call it a dress?)

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay’s pale skin clashes in this nude apricot dress gown thing.

Who is your best and worst dressed from the Golden Globes after-party?

Celebrity Fashion Profile

Fashion Business: Mybag

When did you start your Fashion Business?
October 2002

What was your inspiration to start the business?
I noticed a trend towards photographic prints and thought it was a great idea for personalised bags. I made a bag for myself with a photo of my son Hugo on it, and every time I had it with me people asked where they could get one. I then made some for family and friends and the business grew from there.

Best lessons learnt so far:
Keep focused on your business plan. Build relationships with customers and suppliers. Don?t try to do everything when you start.

Advice to others who want to start own Fashion Business?
Find a gap in the market, then make sure there is a market for that gap.

Favourite Fashion Designers?
I like to wear vintage pieces with current fashion and am not locked into any particular designer. I mix different textures and fabrics always with a hint of colour. I do love Australian designers: Willow, and Sass and Bide.

Celebrity Clients?
Sarah O?Hare, Nicky Buckley, Patty Newton, Melissa Doyle, Effie, Wendy Harmer, Deborah Hutton.

My Personal Style?

Functional with character is important to me similar to Mybag which is the perfect size tote bag and each one an individual piece. I always buy good quality products and this is reflected in Mybag as I use high quality materials which look better and last longer. I think the two key words that sum up my personal style are eclectic and functional.
