What Your Hairdresser Really Thinks: Salon Dos and Don’ts

A good hairdresser is worth their weight in gold. They’re a rare and highly covetable breed whom you may find yourself incredibly invested in – so much so, you contemplate moving cities if your beloved “hair engineer” – gasp – moves to a faraway salon.

RELATED: Winter Hair-Saving Remedies

Okay, maybe not quite, but you get my drift: I’m addicted to the high of good hair and so my beloved, talented hairdresser occupies a special place in my heart. I tell her all my secrets and have laughed and cried under her care and then, like my own fairy godmother, she makes my hair look better and better each time I visit. I fully understand and support celebrities spending thousands of dollars to fly their hairdressers with them all over the world. Wouldn’t you, if you could?

But have you ever wondered what your hairdresser is really thinking? The secrets only they possess in their quiet, calm reverie? Read on, for senior Queensland hairdresser Elyse Louise, 22, was kind enough to share her top 5 salon dos and don’ts. Here, Elyse dishes the dirt on big industry no-nos and the appropriate hair etiquette we should all adopt.

haircut, hairdresser, hairdresser secrets, hairdresser etiquette

  1. Creepy crawlies: One of Elyse’s pet hates is, understandably, coming across a client with a head full of nits! Gross! As heinous as this is, it does happen, she says, and leaves hairdressers with no option, but to refuse their services and send the client home. Aside from being totally rank, it’s against hairdresser workplace health and safety to work on a nit-plagued ‘do. Elyse says she’s seen young kids through to teenagers with the dreaded infestated hair.
  1. Celebrity lookalike: There’s nothing a good hairdresser hates more, says Elyse, than a client bringing in a photo of celebrity and saying: “Make me look like that”. For starters, you may not resemble your fave celebrity in any way and hairdressers are expertly trained to match your hair style to best suit your individual facial structure and hair type. This means that as much as you might think and hope your hairdresser can suddenly transform you into the likes of supermodel Gisele, it just ain’t going to happen.
  1. Clients with no idea: Another big hairdresser hate is clients who say: “Just do whatever you want”. This is a big gamble: how do you know your hairdresser isn’t a complete sadist who will shave off all your hair just for kicks? Elyse says hairdressers much prefer it when you come into a salon with a strong idea of what you want; otherwise you’re just wasting everyone’s time.
  1. Invest in a change: If you’re looking for a major, new ‘do – for example going from black to blonde – be prepared for the fact that you can’t do it in one session, Elyse says. A big change will take many salon visits to accomplish unless you want less-than-amazing results. So, be patient and persist with it. Hairdressers, as amazingly talented as some of them are, still cannot perform miracles (bugger).
  1. Hairdressers aren’t psychics: The next time you’re tempted to say to a new hairdresser: “Do it exactly the same as the last person” – give yourself a little slap, Elyse says. Hairdressers aren’t mind readers and it’s inevitable they’ll cut and colour your hair differently than the last stylist. Sure, you can carefully instruct them on exactly what you want, but they most likely will not give you exactly the same result as a hairdresser from another salon. Be open to change, or don’t ever go to a new hairdresser.

Ponytail Ideas For Long Hair

Elegant up-dos for girls with long, thick hair can often prove difficult, especially since your locks are bound to drop throughout the day. We’ve come up with some quick and easy ways to style long hair in a fool-proof ponytail for the party season.

RELATED: 5 Long Celebrity Hairstyles We Love

Low ponytail

If your hair has the tendency to drop throughout the day, choose a hairstyle which requires little or no maintenance. Create some volume at the roots by using a voluminous hair mousse on damp locks, and letting it dry naturally. Once hair is dry, backcomb the roots, and tie into a low ponytail.

1

Wrapped ponytail

Disguise your elastic by wrapping a small section of hair around the ponytail. This is an elegant look which is appropriate for the day and night if you have a special event on the cards. Once hair is in a ponytail, curl the ends and secure with some setting spray.

2

Braided ponytail

For an extra bit of volume on fine hair, create a french braid just above your ear and stop about mid-way through to the other side. Then section off each part of your hair, and combine in a side ponytail.

3

Inside-out ponytail

Create a chic-updo by braiding hair at the nape of your neck, then flipping it inside out. This will keep your ponytail in place all day, and also keep any stray hairs away from your face. A ponytail like this looks particularly elegant on someone with subtle highlights in their hair, or even balayage.

How To Get The “Wet” Hair Look

Want a high-fashion hairstyle, without the fuss? You may have seen “wet” hair on many runways and red carpets this fall, with everyone from Emma Watson to Rosie Huntington Whiteley sporting this chic new look.  Fortunately, it is easy for you to do at home! Try this sexy new style on your next night out using our handy how-to guide.

RELATED: Best hairstyles for short hair

You will need:

  • Hair gel or coconut oil
  • Hairspray
  • A comb (the finer the comb teeth, the better)
  • Bobby pins

Instructions

1. Start with slightly wet hair. You can either wash your hair and wait until it is partially dry, or using a spray bottle, spritz some water over your hair to make it damp.

2. Using a comb, separate the sections of your hair. Start first with the hair on one side of your head, around and above your ear. Rub some gel/oil between your hands and apply it to the top of the section, near the roots of your hair, combing through with fingers. Comb back this section of the hair, pinning at the back to keep it secure. Repeat with sections on the other side, and top of the head.

Tip: Experiment with your part – you can keep most of your hair to one side, or slick it all back like Kim Kardashian (pictured above).

3. Complete with a fine coat of hairspray. Don’t forget to carry some gel with you throughout the day for touch-ups!

Mila Kunis’ Chic Messy Ponytail Hairstyle

One of our all-time favourite hair up styles is Mila Kunis’ chic messy ponytail, so we asked Schwarzkopf’s National Technical Educator Grant Withnell to show us how to recreate the look at home!

1. Apply a small amount of mousse to the hair and blow dry using a large round brush.

2. Back comb the crown area of the hair to create volume here only.

3. Pull hair loosely back into a ponytail keeping volume at the crown and smooth at the front– secure with a hair tie.

4. Apply a heat protector and taking large sections and using a large curling create the waves.

5. Use a powder such as Schwarzkopf Extra Care Volume Powder to add texture and unstructure the waves.

6. Apply a lacquer for hold.

Get the Look: Sienna Miller’s High Bun Hairstyle

Sienna Miller’s high bun is such a pretty hairstyle for New Year’s, weddings and summer festivities. Schwarzkopf’s National Technical Educator Grant Withnell shows us how to get one of the best hair up styles at home in just a few easy steps.

1. Add a generous amount of salt spray and using your hand, blast hair with hair dryer to create texture.

2. Once dry, add a styling powder for more texture. Roughly pull hair into a high ponytail and secure with a hair band, making sure to leave out some pieces to add later.

3. Twist hair and wrap into a knot (don’t be too neat here), then secure with large pins.

4. Randomly select any pieces left out, twist and secure out of the way.

5. Tuck others behind the ears and add more powder for added texture.

6. Spray a light mist of Schwarzkopf Extra Care Strong Styling Hairspray and away you go!

What’s your go-to party hairstyle?

Get the Look: Party Bun Hairstyle

The classic bun is one of our favourite hair up styles for party season – it’s chic, elegant and really easy to achieve the look. It’s a favourite with celebrities like Olivia Wilde, Jessica Alba and Kate Bosworth, and really draws attention to the eyes, making it perfect for party season when you can play up your eye makeup. Just Cuts director Denis McFadden show us how to recreate the hairstyle in 4 easy steps!

What you’ll need:

Hair tie
JUSTICE Professional Sea Salt Spray
A few bobby pins
JUSTICE Professional Workable Hairspray
Hair foam donut like Scunci Bun Maker

1: Prep your hair
A great up-do will last better if your hair is textured and voluminous. Spritz clean hair with JUSTICE Professional Sea Salt Spray and work through the ends roughly with your fingers.

bunhair

2: Ponytail
Tie your hair in a ponytail using your hair tie. I love the top knot style for summer, it keeps your hair at bay and suits everyone – so aim for your ponytail to be high and tight. You can smooth hair back or wear a bit messier – depending on the look you’re going for.

bunhairstyle

3: Create the bun

Wrap the foam donut around your hair almost like a hair tie so it’s around the base of your ponytail. Spread your hair over the donut and wrap any loose ends around. This is a fabulous way to add oomph and volume to short or fine hair and it looks totally natural.

If you’ve got lots of hair and don’t want to use a donut, twist your hair and wrap it around your hair tie. Again, wrap any loose ends around the bun.

howtobun

4: Set the look
Pin your bun with some bobby pins, pushing in towards the bun so they can’t be seen.

When you’re happy with your look and have found the perfect texture, set the look with JUSTICE Professional Workable Hairspray. The non-aerosol hairspray is great as it won’t drown your locks in product and there’s no sticky crunch, just incredible hold.

Get the Look: Nina Dobrev’s Braided Updo

Nina Dobrev looked so pretty at the TrevorLIVE event in Hollywood on the weekend, wearing a braided bun that is one of the most elegant hair up styles we’ve seen on the red carpet.

It might look intricate, but celebrity hairstylist Marcus Francis explains how to recreate this look in just 5 easy steps (so if you’re looking for summer wedding hair inspiration, pay attention!).

1. Apply a generous amount of Suave Professionals Volumizing Mousse to damp hair and rough dry with hands and a blowdryer.

2. Make a messy side part and divide hair into two sections — down the center in the back. Lightly tease the crown with a tail comb for a little height.

3. Spray each side with Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo to revive hair and add volume and texture. Begin French braiding the first section against the head, continuing to the ends like you would a side ponytail, and secure with an elastic. Repeat with the other side.

4. Loosen each braid by pulling each side, allowing for pieces to come out, giving that soft, effortless look. Take one of the braids and pin it across the back to create a large bun using hair pins. Do the same with the other braid, going back and forth along the back to blend in with the first braid.

5. Finally, pull out a few face framing layers and spray the entire look with Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Extra Hold Hairspray to set.

Get the Look: Christina Ricci’s Half Up Half Down Hairstyle

Christina Ricci looked chic and elegant at this week’s UNICEF Snowflake Ball, with a feminine half up half down hairstyle that is a sophisticated twist on classic hair up styles. Here’s how celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson created the look.

1. I first sprayed her hair with build it blowdrying agent and blow dried to add texture and body.

2. I then swiped hairsheet styling from mid-lengths to ends to add shine. Once the hair was dry, I parted it in a deep side part.

3. Then, parting her hair horizontally from ear to ear, I left the bottom half of her hair down and put the top half in a pony, leaving the front of her hair at the part out for a side bang and face frame.

4. I finished with beautiful hold hairspray to hold it all in place.

Celebrity Hairstyles: Christina Aguilera’s Glam Bob

Christina Aguilera has never looked better than on the first live show of season 5 of The Voice in the U.S. on 4 November.

Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii created a classic Hollywood A-Line bob with a contemporary twist. For David, the inspiration was Christina’s sizzling new look which could only be complimented with one of the most glamourous celebrity hairstyles. As he wrote on his Instagram photo of Christina, “I mean come on I work with the most beautiful woman In the world. Life is good.”

1. David first cut a classic A-line bob to add a more dramatic contour to her style.

2. After shampooing and towel drying, David added a small amount of mousse to the root area (for lift and volume), leaving the ends free to move.

3. Next, he blow dried her hair with a T3 blow dryer and large round brush, adding movement and swing to the ends.

4. To finish, he bumped the ends under slightly with large barrel curling iron and misted lightly with hairspray for added volume.

Get The Look: Lily Collins’ Textured Waves Hairstyle

Lily Collins’ textured waves with a centre part as seen at the Vogue Fashion Fund event at the Chateau Marmont in L.A. yesterday is such a cute hairstyle for short to medium-length hair. Here’s how celebrity hairstylist Mara Roszak created the look in just a few easy steps.

1. Mara started by spraying Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray then rough drying the hair using the Harry Josh Pro Tools Hairdryer.

2. Next, she waved Lily’s hair using a one-inch barrel iron, creating a natural, textured wave.

3. To break up the style, she then used Serge Normant Dry Shampoo all over.

4. Then to add a bit more ‘piecey-ness,’ Mara rubbed Kevin Murphy Night Rider Matte Texture Paste into the palms of her hands and ran it through her hair.

5. Finally, she sprayed L’Oreal Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hairspray all over to seal the textured wave.

5 Hairstyles For Round Faces

Whether you’ve got full, thick hair or fine, thin hair, you will have noticed the difference that your face shape makes on how your favourite hairstyle looks. Complimenting a round face isn’t always easy so we’ve put together five of the best hairstyles for round faces, plus some styling tips to help you style your new cut.

Whatever your hair type, long hair will elongate a round face. Selena Gomez’s longer, layered cut really compliments her round face. If you have very thick, curly hair, try taming it with specialised hair products and hair tools.

roundfacehairstyles1

With short hair or tied-up hair, try adding volume on the top of the head with moose, spritz, back-combing or wax, just like style queen Ginnifer Goodwin who adds texture to her pixie cut with a little hair product, instantly elongating the face.

roundfacehairstyles3

Fringes can look amazing on round faces, just avoid thick fringes on hair that is shoulder length or above – this will just swamp your face. Kirsten Dunst opts for a soft, side-swept fringe will looks romantic and feminine yet flattering.

roundhairstyles4

Thick or curly hair can look very dense when cut short, making your face look rounder. If you have very thick hair and wish to cut your hair to shoulder length or shorter, layering and feathering can make the hair look lighter and smoother. Law and Order’s Mariska Hargitay might have thick, full hair, but her chic short hairstyle and clever layering makes her hair look lighter and younger.

roundhairstyles5

When wearing hair up, trail some hair at the front to frame the face – Emma Stone is a pro at the updo with soft, feathered layers around the face.

Hairstyling tips for round faces:

1. Frame your face by curling the front of the hair inwards. This looks best when done at around chin length.

2. As with any face shape, healthy, well-kept hair will always make you look and feel great, so stick to a daily hair care beauty regime, avoiding heated styling aids and chemical-heavy products when possible. Pay attention to your hair type and condition when choosing from among the many fashionable hairstyles for round faces that are out there.

5 Of The Best Very Short Hairstyles

Winter is the perfect time to make a major hairstyle change and opt for the chop. Very short hair looks super chic with a turtleneck and trench coat (and gives you enough time before summer to grow it out if you’re not thrilled with the look).

The decision to chop your long hair off can make you quite apprehensive, particularly as you come to the day of your hair cut and still haven’t made the decision of which style to go for! To help you make that decision, here are five of the best very short hairstyles out there right now.

Pixie cut hairstyle

This is a stylish and eye-catching style for thin, fine hair and is a favourite with celebrities like Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway. It will really make your eyes pop, so now is the time to play up your eye makeup with stronger brows and dark lashes.

katieholmesveryshorthairstyle

Short and sleek bob

This is a variation of the pixie cut but with longer and shorter layers to give a sleeker look. This style is perfect for all ages and ideal if you’ve got fine hair and are looking for a more sophisticated, fashionable look as a refreshing change to long, limp locks – just ask Katie Holmes.

ashleesimpsonveryshorthairstyle

Face framing bob

This chic hair cut is short at the back and long enough at the front to frame your face and can suit every face shape, but it particularly compliments a rounder face. For an even more striking look, pair the chop with a bold new hair colour, like Ashlee Simpson’s platinum blonde bob.

drewbarrymoreveryshorthairstyle

Short and messy hairstyle

Messy short styles are among the easiest to maintain, often needing just a quick tousle with some wax – ideal if you’re not a morning person and only have a few minutes to get ready! Short and messy hairstyles also suit different face shapes. Drew Barrymore’s messy bob is both sexy and sophisticated.

danniiminogueveryshorthairstyle

Classic bob with fringe

There are so many variations to the classic bob, though a very short version with a bold fringe is trending once more and really gives body to otherwise flyaway hair. Dannii Minogue’s bob and fringe is one of our favourite hairstyles of all time. It’s more high maintenance than other bob hairstyles, but you can style the fringe in many ways, including a side swept fringe, clipped up away from the face or tousled in soft waves.

Get The Look: Claire Danes’ Sexy Medium Hairstyle For Vogue

Claire Danes looks fierce on the cover of the August issue of US Vogue magazine. Celebrity hair expert Oribe Canales shares how he created Claire’s sexy hairstyle for the Homeland-inspired photo shoot – we think it’s the perfect medium hairstyle.

“It’s clean, easy, all-American hair with a bit of sex appeal,” Oribe explained “It’s very Claire Danes.”

“Mist Oribe Hair Care’s Thick Dry Finishing Spray onto wet hair and then blow-dry it with a round brush,” Oribe explained.

“[Then] set the hair using Velcro rollers. Once removed, use a brush to break up the curl.”

Oribe says you can achieve Claire’s volumised effect at the ends of her hair by using a spray to give texture and a heated tong for definition.

“To create a subtle lift, spritz Dry Texturising Spray at the roots. For more movement, simply use a large-barrel iron to give a bit of bend to your strands and finish by spraying Soft Dry Conditioner throughout,” he added. “This keeps the volume and texture, but adds a softness and youngness to her locks.”
