Reality Bites: Do You Have Resting Bitch Face Syndrome?

Life can prove eternally interesting and problematic at times when you unwittingly have a resting bitch face (RBF), aka Bitchy Resting Face (BRF). I’m talking about a puckered-up, cats-bum facial expression you regularly adopt when relaxed, which is often misinterpreted as rage, contempt and sadness.

Think Hollywood RBF-aficionados such as actors Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Jeremy Renner; singer Avril Lavigne and rapper Kanye West; fashion designer Victoria Beckham and arguably the most famous one of all,  US editrix Anna Wintour of Vogue, second only to the original RBF: her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Of course, for these A-list celebrities (and fashion/British royalty), it must get a tad wearing having paparazzi follow you around 24/7, but their famed surly facial expressions as a consequence of resting bitch face syndrome are a true joy to behold.

Anna Wintour, resting bitch face, bitchy resting face

Sadly, in real life you can’t make like fashion icon Anna Wintour and scowl your way through the day without offending someone. I should know – I too have a serious resting bitch face myself, which has landed me in a lot of hot water over the years.

At 41, I’ve gotten much better at adopting a poker face, but it’s taken many years and patience to perfect. My involuntary RBF has offended everyone from high school teachers through to newsroom bosses over the years – there have been some seriously awkward moments when I’ve had to explain myself.

And what can you really say? “Sorry, my face just does this on its own?” Or what about: “I was just born this way – sorry.” Once, I felt compelled to explain away my RBF to a close work colleague, a fellow journo I’m still friends with to this day, by saying: “Look, when I concentrate, I look really cranky, sorry in advance.”

You see, unfortunately I frown a lot when I’m working – it’s just what I do, I can’t help it. It doesn’t mean I’m remotely unhappy, sad, angry or being judgmental. Hell, maybe I should get a face full of Botox so no one can ever accuse me of having any facial expression!

And so I really relate to and empathise with Twilight actor Kristen Stewart’s RBF trauma in particular, which always seems to get her into trouble. I mean, why should she have to smile all the time – wouldn’t that look even weirder?!

Recently, when asked about her RBF, she told ELLE UK: “The whole smiling thing is weird because I actually smile a lot. I literally want to be like: ‘Dude, you would think I was cool if you got to know me’.” I’m feeling you, K-Stew.

What do you think? Do you have a RBF?

Throwback Thursday: Golden Globes 2004

January 27, 2004

Everyone knows that award shows aren’t just about the winners. Self-respecting, hard-working fashion victims around the globe sit glued to awards shows for hours, critiquing the outfits, the accessories, the boyfriends, the make up and the speeches. Come on, fess up. You do it, we all do it. Now, let’s compare notes…

Former royalty A-lister, Sarah Ferguson quite frankly should have stayed home! Her Cleopatra eye makeup was more Mardi Gras than Golden Globe… Someone who has all the right moves, however, is South African farm girl turned superstar Charlize Theron who made a fabulous entrance in Christian Dior. Gorgeous, charming and a winner through and through, taking home the best Actress award.

Blondes have more fun? Not so for Sarah Jessica Parker and that haute coute dress made especially for her by Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel looked stunning! Also looking like a million bucks was Jennifer Aniston, minus her most famous handbag, hubby Brad Pitt. Mrs Pitt also presented an award on the night, and it looked like she came dangerously close to popping out of her sexy dress with its super plunging neckline!

One of the spunkiest men on earth, Johnny Depp looked positively sexy in his old-style gangster get up, accompanied by his stunning wifey Vanessa Paradis. Sex in the City veteran Kim Cattrell looked just peachy with an up hair do, and a silky frock, that was ten times as classy as her alter ego Samantha has even been. Vintage Valentino will do that to a girl, darling.

Will and Grace star Debra Messing was positively glowing in a fab frock with loads of cleavage! Not a hint of frumpy maternity wear here! And that other fabulous-when-pregnant star Catherine Zeta Jones, self-appointed princess of Hollywood, rubbed everyone’s noses in it – talk about smug married! Queer Eye fav Carson got into the spring of things, sporting a pink jacket – how appropriate. Notably absent from the red carpet was another fiery raven-haired beauty, Penelope Cruz.

Current beau Tom Cruise was nominated for best actor, the award being presented by ex-wife Nicole Kidman. Now, that could have been one awkward moment. But luckily, for our Nic, neither Tom, nor good friends Russell Crowe and Jude Law took the title. Nic was a fashion star on the night with a stunning frock featuring a gold sequin bodice, plunging neckline and romantic flowing, chiffon skirt, courtesy of Yves Saint Laurent. Critics the world over have been commenting on our Nic’s style on this night of nights. To us, she can never put a foot wrong.

Female Celebrities Who Shaved Their Heads

Toni Collette recently debuted a hot new hairstyle – the buzz cut! The Aussie actress shaved her locks for her role as a cancer patient, alongside Drew Barrymore and Dominic Cooper in Miss You Already. Toni isn’t the first actress to go to such lengths (or shorts?) in the name of her craft. Perhaps you remember when these other celebs shaved their heads for film roles. Fun fact: 4 out of the 5 ladies have won Academy Awards. Just saying…

Celebrity Hairstyles: Charlize Theron’s Plaited Side Bun

Award-winning hairstylist Lizzie Liros shows us how to get a gorgeous plaited side bun like Charlize Theron. It’s such a romantic hair up style that we can’t help but think it would make a gorgeous wedding hairstyle whether you’re the bride, bridesmaid or guest.

1. Ensure the hair is completely dry.

2. Part the hair in a side part and pull back into a low side ponytail on the opposite side of the part, leaving only the fringe section out.

3. Split the ponytail in two and plait one section at a time. Then twist the sections in a circular motion to create a bun. Ensuring the hair band is hidden and pin the two plaits in place.

4. With your fingers using small amount of serum if desired, smooth out the front fringe section working away from your face, leaving a couple of stands to fall freely around your face.

5. Finish with a light hair spray to hold the hair in place, without creating stiffness.

Tip: Use a clip in hairpiece to create length and volume for the bun if your hair is not naturally long enough to create the look. Lizzie recommends the 2-Clip Clip-In Hairpiece by Amazing Hair Australia, RRP $42.00.

What do you think of Charlize Theron’s plaited side bun hairstyle?

Oscars Fashion Round up

Oscars fashion round up

And the winner is… Charlize
Classy dresses in soft shades adorned with lavish beadwork were the winners at this year’s Academy Awards. From subtle peach and pale lemon to beautifully rich creams, the Oscars frocks were for the most part, tasteful and classic. Looking gorgeous in Tom Ford for Gucci, was best actress winner Charlize Theron. Topping off what is surely one of the best years in this young actress’s life, statuesque South African-born star was awarded the industry’s highest accolade for her portrayal as a serial killer in the film Monster.

Uma Thurman – maybe her shoes are really nice?
Pale and interesting
Nicole Kidman looked divine in a pale green Chanel gown, and best supporting actress winner Renee Zellweger looked sleek in a simple white Carolina Herrera strapless frock. And while pastel shades and simple designs worked for some, one Hollywood dame didn’t quite pull the look off, looking pale and uninteresting in an unflattering ruffled, doily number. Uma Thurman – my Nan wants her toilet roll cover back! Rumour has it, she at least had the good sense to change into something else before attending the post-awards parties.

Naomi and Heath – a nuptial dress rehearsal?
Retro glamour
The fashion of the night seemed to hark back to Hollywood’s Golden Age, with lots of classic Jean Harlow-eqsue 1930’s style hair-dos, soft curls and figure-hugging gowns. Best actress nominee Naomi Watts was no match for Charlize in the awards stakes, but looked every inch the winner in a flesh-toned Versace number covered in hundreds of sparkly crystals. Some stars bucked the trend for pretty pastels, including a youthful looking Catherine Zeta Jones opting for vibrant scarlet vintage Versace, to show off her fab post-baby bod.

Jude Law and Sienna
And the men?
Johnny Depp was particularly charming to 13-year-old best supporting actress Keisha Castle-Hughes, even giving the star struck teen a kiss for good luck! But what was the story with his terrible hair? Wispy fringe and middle part – urgh! Jude Law looked ravishing, as usual and former best actor winner Adrien Brody looked smart in an Ermenegildo Zegna all black, slim fitting suit. Showing impeccable grooming, Adrien also freshened up with a quick burst of breath freshening spray after announcing Charlize Theron winner of best actress award. Who could forget his sensational acceptance pash with presenter Halle Berry at last year’s awards? What a charmer!
