Style Overhaul: How To Minimise Your Wardrobe

A far cry from an episode of Hoarders, can you remember the last time you conducted a thorough wardrobe clean out? I recently trolled through my floordrobe since a change of seasons seemed like the perfect time to dissect the clothes I accumulated over the years, and finally let some of it go. There is a reason why buying clothes is therapeutic, the same reason it feels so good letting them go.

The one-year rule

The golden rule to live by if you’re hoarding a piece of clothing away for a rainy day: Have you worn it in more than a year? If you’ve nodded yes, the item may stay. Research shows that clothes we don’t wear for more than a year will never find their way out of that closet. The style may not be trendy, size may not fit, but it’s time to get rid of it.

Too small?

Everyone is guilty of saving something in hopes they might squeeze into it again someday. A very rational reason to hold onto something for so long, but if you’re in desperate need of closet space, you are willing to let it go. Just think of how many other clothes you can buy in it’s place, that will actually suit your body instead of collecting dust.

More clothes, more selection

Did you know that the average person only wears 20% of their wardrobe regularly? Having a plethora of clothes to choose from doesn’t always mean one intends to wear every single piece of it. Try to minimise your wardrobe by discarding clothes that work within your style.

The French wardrobe

Invest in clothes that can remain timeless through the many trends that rise and fall throughout the years. There is a reason French women own some flawless style such as former Paris Vogue Editor Carine Roitfeld, and that comes down to the five piece wardrobe. This mostly minimalist style focuses on classic pieces, an unlimited amount of basics for all seasons, and shoes. Every season you are only allowed five statement pieces used to update your look, and keep it somewhat modern.
