It’s time to ban the plastic from our cosmetics for good.
They’re like mood rings for your lips.
If this is what basic bitches wear, we’ll join the club.
Why only wear one shade when you can wear all of them?
Christmas can’t come soon enough with gifts like these.
Yep, I went there, and it was awkward and awesome at the same time…
We know what’s stopping you from achieving flawless skin.
The brand’s talcum powder is linked to causing ovarian cancer.
Who knew your perfume could be as good as that awful insect stuff?
Your beauty filing system ’bout to get next level.
Women love cosmetics, that’s a fact. It is just so much fun to try out different looks. Want to be glamourous? Red lippie will help! Want to look sexy? Get out that smokey eye kit!
There are endless possibilities, which is why our bathroom vanities are often packed with products (something men will never understand). Recently, the trend of all-natural cosmetics has taken the beauty world by storm.
The health-conscious beauty lover not only cares about what a beauty product can do, but also about what’s in it. It makes sense; if you eat and drink healthy and avoid processed foods, why would you put chemicals on your skin?
You’d be mistaken if you think that all-natural cosmetics are beige, bland and smell like chamomile. The hippie days are over and organic, natural make up has become fun and flirty. Bellabox have released an all-natural beauty box for this month, containing six products with natural ingredients only. I have put them to the test and am more than impressed:
Organic Coffee Scrub:
This scrub is made from a mix of Australian roasted organic coffee grounds and recycled organic pod coffee, naturally evaporated organic sea salt, cold pressed organic virgin coconut oil and steam distilled organic peppermint essential oil. As a coffee lover, I can’t help but adore this product. There is nothing better than the smell of coffee and if I can use coffee to get rid of dry skin and promote skin renewal, that’s just a bonus!
Allurin Minerals Illuminiser:
If you love sparkly, glowing skin, you’ll love this Australian mineral illuminating powder. Its nude colour makes it perfect to use on your entire body; I prefer it on my legs rather than my face.
Jurlique Purely Age Defying Treatment Mask:
When it comes to face masks, I love the idea of all-natural ingredients as you never know what chemicals might do to your skin. This mask is a multi-benefit anti-ageing treatment with concentrated botanicals to help reduce the visible appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Well, I don’t have any wrinkles yet, but it sure felt good and left my skin smooth.
Milk Hand Quench:
I have tried many different hand creams throughout the years and I find that there are great differences between products. What I hate most about some hand creams is that they feel greasy – not the case with this natural one containing cocoa butter and sesame oil. Bergamot fruit oil soothes the senses with aromas of mint and citrus, whilst aiding in healing eczema and cracked skin. What an all-rounder!
Jane Iredale Lip and Cheek Stain:
This is my favourite product! The little orange lipstick feels like a light lip balm and at first seems transparent, but after a few minutes on your lips, it adapts to your lip colour and brings out the most natural looking pink-orange hue you can imagine. Perfect for the I-woke-up-like-this-look.
A thermometer? Oh I see, it’s a fertility app! While this might not exactly be a beauty product, it sure is all-natural! The app lets you manage your fertility and is a great alternative for women who are sick of the side effects of the pill or similar contraceptives.
I loved this month’s bellabox and couldn’t resist to ask beauty director Samantha Taylor a thing or two about the all-natural cosmetics trend.
Natural and organic products are very popular at the moment. What are the benefits of natural cosmetics?
If you have allergies or sensitive skin, explore natural brands as they can help soothe the skin and prevent further irritation.
This is the second natural bellabox and the first one was quite the success; have you noticed that women are starting to care about what’s in their cosmetics more?
We tend to do a natural box at least once a year as we know our members are keen to discover more natural brands. Consumers are becoming more aware of what they put on their face and body, so the demand for natural brands is increasing.
What is your favourite natural product and why?
I love a good facial oil, as they are packed with nourishing ingredients and are wonderful for keeping the skin hydrated.
It’s finally spring in Australia, what are the biggest make up trends of the season?
A pop of colour on the lips, pastel eye shadow and graphic eyeliner.
The UK cosmetics industry is worth an estimated £4.5 billion but an article in the Daily Mail shows that added toxic ingredients present in some forms of make up can cause danger. Although the UK Government regulates these products there are always loopholes that can be exploited. Here are ten chemicals and products to avoid.
1. Dying your hair
Latex Gloves from Brosch Direct are an excellent way to protect your hands when using hair dyes and other chemicals, but they don’t stop your scalp from being damaged during the dying process. Although hair products have changed drastically over the years there are still certain compounds such as coal-tar, which can cause bladder cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
2. Aluminium pigments
Most skin care products are safe; mascara, eye shadow and eye pencils all contain aluminium powder, which can lead to neurotoxicity and cancer. There is a misconception that high cost and quality products are safe but these products are just as dangerous as their cheaper counterparts.
3. Sunscreens and vitamin A
Half of all sunscreens on the market contain an ingredient known as retinyl palmitate, or vitamin A palmitate. This chemical should not be put onto skin if you are going to be in direct sunlight, it is used in many night creams due to the fact that you can’t use it in daylight. If you use a sunscreen with this additive you can develop tumours.
4. Perfumes and fragrances
Any product that has the word fragrant on the advertising is probably not going to be good for your skin. Some alcohols used in the manufacture of perfumes have been known to cause hormone disruption and allergic reactions.
5. Propylene glycol
This clear odourless, tasteless liquid is used in food and cosmetics and is classed as safe, but it can cause brain, liver and kidney disorders if used incorrectly or regularly. When used in the chemical industry as revealed on the mindbodygreen website it is treated with great care by the people working with it.
6. Benzoyl peroxides and acne
Acne can be a horrendous problem for the young and old but most creams contain the chemical benzoyl peroxide which can cause cancers and also become a skin irritant.
7. Teeth cleaning
Brushing your teeth twice a day or maybe more should be a safe process but the toothpaste itself contains a chemical called triclosan which is linked to cancer cell growth and can cause damage to the gums and premature births if used long term.
8. Hair straightening
Some people prefer straight hair others curly; if you are using chemical hair straightening products you may not realise the damage you are doing to your hair and also your body. These products contain keratin which can cause nerve, chest pain and rashes.
9. Green isn’t always safe
Some so-called green products can still contain harmful chemicals such as chlorphenesin and neurotoxin. When buying cosmetics even reading the label won’t give you all the information you need. Some chemicals are left out.
All of us use some form of anti-perspirant and don’t realise the possible dangers of the aluminium salts that are present which can cause of breast cancer and skin irritation.
Being a stunning siren like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is only a few beauty tips away… Okay, maybe you won’t look exactly like RHW but you can recreate this gorgeous look with a few simple steps and the right tools.
Rosie’s skin was prepped with ModelCo Face Base Skin Primer to create a flawless, no-budge canvas. After waiting 30 seconds for it to set, Fluid Splash 3 in 1 Foundation (No. 6) was blended all over for a dewy, even coverage.
ModelCo’s Bronze Pressed Powder (Matte) was used under her cheekbones and along the top of her forehead. The matte formula worked to create shadow and accentuate Rosie’s angles, as well as give her a flawless glow.
For a smokey eye, ModelCo’s Eye Shadow Trio (Moroccan Spice) was applied. We layered Maldives and St Barts shades, before applying the chocolate brown Jamaica shade both on the lids and under the eyes, concentrating on sweeping the colour outwards for a more dramatic, feline look. The look was finished by brightening her eyes with a hint of gold Maldives in the inner corners.
ModelCo’s Gel Eyeliner is a must applied to the upper lash line to give the smokey eye definition and we used ModelCo Colourbox Eye Pencil (Black) along the lower lashes to balance the look.
Rosie’s lashes were curled using ModelCo’s Turbo Lashwand Heated Eyelash Curler followed with many coats of Huntington-Whiteley’s favourite ModelCo Fat Lash Volumising Mascara, a buildable formula that creates thick, luscious lashes.
“I am a huge fan of ModelCo Fat Lash. It’s great for thickening the lashes and adding lots of volume” – Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
To create a glamorous, lacquered pout first use ModelCo Party Proof Lipstick (Red Velvet) and then layer with ModelCo Shine Ultra Lip Gloss (Showgirl Red).
“My all-time favourite lipstick colour – red. I feel sexy and empowered when I’m wearing red. ModelCo’s Red Velvet is a great choice”– Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

SHESAID’s then-publisher Monique Talbot sat down with Roslyn Stutchbury from Body By Design in Sydney to discuss what are the best beauty technology tools around right now. Roslyn has been in the health and beauty industry for over 20 years, although you would never know that to look at her, she still looks a girl in her 20’s so you should listen to her advice!
Roslyn’s top 3 favourite technology advances are LED (Light Emitting Diode) Cold Light Skin Therapy, Ultraceuticals Sonophoresis, and Shellac Nail Treatment. Don’t be alarmed by the industry jargon and acronyms, Roslyn explains everything in plain English, it is easy to understand why she recommends which treatment for you depending on your health, skin and lifestyle factors.
Roslyn says: “Invest in your skin as you wear it every day.” She also compares skin fitness to your body’s fitness and that both need to be done regularly for positive results.
Monique says: “Roslyn is like a secret beauty professional to the stars, you can sneak in to her Lane Cove salon unnoticed and experience the most amazing session in her ever so capable hands. She has been in the industry for years, teaches yoga, doesn’t drink or eat junk food, looks about 25 years old and can read people so easily it is a little spooky. She is a great example of what looking after your skin, your body and your soul can do for you.
“I was green with envy but not enough to give up my love of champers! I did willingly let her recommend the LED and Sonophoresis for me and left glowing and relaxing like I had just had a long nap in the sun. Can’t wait for my next visit!”
What is Photonlite LED?
Phototherapy is a non-invasive therapy whereby light of specific wavelengths is delivered to the skin to stimulate and activate cellular processes deep within the skin layers. This kind of therapy is completely safe and does not produce a thermal reaction in the skin which makes this a comfortable treatment for your customers.
The LED therapy is best for toning and firming skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and collagen stimulation. The Photonlite uses LED technology to produce a range of light wavelengths to aid in many treatment applications. Being the latest in LED technology, the Photonlite is able to provide not just monochromatic treatments (one colour), it has polychromatic programs using a variety of colours to attain additional therapeutic benefits. There are 3000 powerful light emitting diodes (LEDs) on the Photonlite and this allows a greater surface area to be treated effectively.
Phototherapy has had much success as a stand alone treatment and as a complementary treatment for the following conditions: Reducing fine lines, wrinkles and crows feet, firms and tones the skin, reduces photo aging and sun damage, increases circulation, stimulates and regenerates collagen and elastin, aids in wound healing and scar prevention, kills P-acne bacteria, gentle skin rejuvenation, reduces melanin production and collagen stimulation.
Treatments last 20 minutes and a course of 8-12 sessions is recommended (twice a week) for optimum results. $95 per session or 5 for $380 (1 treatment free) with Roslyn at Body By Design.
What is Sonophoresis?
Ultraceuticals Vitamin Infusion Sonophoresis is a great booster for hydration, is non invasive and improves skin tone, texture and overall clarity of your skin.
Sonophoresis occurs because ultrasound waves stimulate micro-vibrations within the skin epidermis and increase the overall kinetic energy of molecules making up topical agents.
How Ultraceuticals Sonophoresis works
It allows for deep penetration of active ingredients for longer lasting results. Ultraceuticals Sonophoresis Skin Workouts allow for intense transdermal penetration of active ingredients to improve the skin’s overall appearance.
The skin is very effective at providing a barrier to external compounds, primarily through lipids (oils) between skin cells. Disruption of the lipid barrier by ultrasound vibration helps in transdermal delivery. In a short period of time the skin can receive much more than is possible without this method. Low frequency sonophoresis infuses Vitamin C and A into the skin by momentarily creating little spaces in the skin, allowing a greater penetration of applied product. The deep vitamin infusion assists in lightening abnormal skin pigmentation and helps promote the production of collagen, which smoothes the skin and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Benefits of Sonophoresis
Increased skin suppleness and glow, skin appearance rapidly improves, quick results for healthier skin, revitalises skin’s appearance and stimulates new cell growth, excellent companion treatment following peel or microdermabrasion and most importantly no down time and very, visible results.
Hope that helps explain some of the jargon around beauty treatments for you.
Each week, SHESAID features an inspiring woman who has been kind enough to share her story with our readers. She might be a leader in her chosen field, someone still on their own path striving to make a difference or simply someone with a remarkable story to tell. These women contribute their own knowledge, expertise and life lessons in order to truly inspire others.
Name and role:
Michelle Doherty and my husband and I own award winning skincare brand Alpha-H.
Tell us about your role? What is it? What do you do on a day-to-day basis?
Our brand is considered a global leader in corrective and preventative skincare and our best-selling resurfacing treatment Liquid Gold has become a “cult” beauty classic. I spend most of my time expanding the Alpha-H product range both in Australia and overseas, collaborating and working closely with TV networks, international distributers and professional beauty salons. The most rewarding part of my role as Director is having the opportunity to meet with people whose life has been changed through using our products.
How/when did you know this is what you wanted to do as a career?
I started in pharmacy at the age of 15 and worked alongside a number of international skincare ranges and cosmetics, but it was after a brief introduction to just two Alpha-H products that I identified that there was more potential than what over the counter brands were offering. After 4 days of using the brand, I discovered how dramatically it improved my skin, and it was then I knew that I wanted to do this as a career. I quickly realised that there was a gap in the market for solutions driven skincare.
Did you have a mentor? Who/what helped you to get your career of the ground?
I didn’t really have a mentor as such, but because I had been working in the industry for international brands I had the network which helped me establish myself and my career.
You took over Alpha-H in its early stages, what were the stumbling blocks both initially and since then?
The biggest challenge has always been competing in an overcrowded market against faceless multi-national corporations that are heavily marketed and endorsed. It’s important to enlighten our customers that there is a very big difference between a professional clinic brand and what can be purchased over the counter in a department store. This is where we have to establish our point of difference and maintain close relationships with our customers so that we can accurately respond to their want and needs.
Another challenge that we have come up against is changing public perception that the more expensive a product is, the better it is. Our price points are honest because we do not over-hype or over-package and our manufacturing is cost-effective and without compromise. We want our products to be affordable because we believe everyone has the right to great skin, without the need to explore more invasive alternatives.
How did you overcome these?
We are honest, open and also very approachable. I think it helps that we have open dialogue with our customers and take a very candid approach to our marketing. Communication is a powerful tool and cannot be underestimated.
Establishing our point of difference and our value proposition early on has also helped us. We bring the salon into the home, customers’ love being able to achieve salon results in the comfort of their own surroundings. Part of our value proposition is that our products are multi-tasking, our Liquid Gold for example works as your exfoliator, toner, serum and moisturiser.
Alpha-H begun as a family run business and is now an international success. How has the business grown and changed? Was this always what you had planned?
Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine Alpha-H becoming the globally recognized “go to” solutions brand that we have become. In 21 years we have gone from one employee (that being me) to a team of 50 globally. We recognized quickly that to stand out in an overcrowded space we had to create and be the best. Our constant and steady growth has allowed us to build solid foundations and made it possible to implement our own manufacturing facility which enables us to more closely monitor the quality, consistency and standard of each formulation.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Our customers and their journey inspire me when they become part of the Alpha-H family. I also find inspiration from allowing our customers to be the best possible versions of themselves, without having to resort to more invasive procedures or feel the need to ‘be’ someone else.
I gain inspiration for new products through determining the needs of our customers. We understand that they expect to see immediate results, which is why I work closely with a team of cosmetic scientists researching breakthrough ingredients and developing powerful formulations.
As the brand’s owner and director how have your personal experiences influenced your decisions regarding development and direction?
It’s a responsibility and integrity to make a difference that we all share at Alpha-H. Alpha-H was born out of an aspiration and enthusiasm to make a difference and deliver the very best to every customer every day.
What are your goals for the future?
My number one goal is to continue to be a global leader in cosmeceutical skincare through research and continuous innovation and by doing so, change people’s lives.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow the same path as you?
Be passionate, have a desire to want to make a difference. Also to learn from hardships and turn challenges into positives.
Each week SHESAID features an inspiring woman who has been kind enough to share her story with our readers. She might be a leader in her chosen field, someone still on their own path striving to make a difference or simply someone with a remarkable story to tell. But these women will contribute their own knowledge, expertise and life lessons in order to truly inspire others.
Name and role:
Shelley Barrett, CEO and founder of ModelCo Cosmetics
Tell us about your role? What is it? What do you do on a day-to-day basis?
I am the CEO and Founder of ModelCo. I’m still actively involved in all facets of the business so what I do depends on what day it is. One day might involve me working alongside the Research and Development team on new beauty innovations, planning an event with my PR department, designing packaging with Graphics, or working together with the Retail and Distribution team.
How/when did you know this what you wanted to do as a career?
I have always had a strong desire to create my own business and loved that drive to see a project through from start to finish, no matter how big or small. After owning and running my own modelling agency for 10 years, I saw a niche in the market for innovative, quick-fix and multi-purpose beauty solutions and from here, ModelCo was born and the world’s first ever TAN Airbrush in a Can was launched.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I’m inspired everyday by the women I come into contact with whether it is my team at ModelCo HQ, friends, family and of course our customers. I am constantly thinking about our consumer and trying to understand what she wants and how to make her beauty regime easier. I am also fortunate enough incorporate travel into my work life and draw inspiration from the different cultures and beauty regimes across the world.
Did you have a mentor? Who/what helped you to get your career off the ground?
My mother has been my most supportive influence and who I would class as my mentor. When ModelCo initially began she worked with me running the accounts side of the business and today my mother Kerrie still works in our accounts department!
What were the stumbling blocks, initially getting started on your career path, and since then?
When I first started ModelCo there were only two products, LASHWAND Heated Eyelash Curler and then TAN Airbrush in a Can, I certainly didn’t realise at the time that I was starting my own beauty company. What started as a pet project turned into a global brand before I knew it and I had to be on top of and in control of all facets of the business.
How did you overcome these?
By trusting my own instinct! When you’re brand is doing well, endless opportunities are available so it is important to manage growth carefully and execute each idea properly and confidently.
What are your goals for the future?
ModelCo is now 13 years old and has a successful range of cosmetics, self-tanning, suncare and recently launched natural skincare products. This year I am committed to expanding the range to other key global markets such as Asia and growing our current distribution in Europe and the USA. Whatever the future holds for ModelCo, the brand will stay true to its mantra of creating innovative beauty solutions for women on-the-go.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow the same path as you?
Understand the business that you are going into. Surround yourself with people who have more knowledge than you and who can guide you through the process. Work out the funds you need to start up and then double them!
Spring calls for fresh, dewy skin and bright, gorgeous hues. Try these easy makeup tips for spring that look great on everyone.
Keep your skin looking soft and dewy with BB cream
Part moisturizer and part foundation, BB cream also works overtime as a sunscreen and an anti-aging treatment, which makes it our number one spring beauty must-have.BB cream are so light it feels like you’re wearing nothing but lotion, perfect for anyone who wants flawless skin but hates wearing heavy foundation. We love how luminous our skin looks with Dr. Brandt Signature Flexitone BB Cream, and another favorite on our shelves is Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm.

A quick and easy way to brighten up your face is with a bright pop of lip color. If you’re feeling particularly bold and adventurous, give orange lipstick a try. True orange isn’t always the most flattering, but coral looks fantastic with pretty much all skin tones. After applying, blot your lips for a matte finish, then reapply. If you’re looking for a more subdued way to incorporate the trend, Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint has a gorgeous orange stain called Spirited that is a makeup artist favorite.

Forget the ombré or sombre hair trends as recently favoured by A-list celebs – ombré eyebrows are so hot right now. It’s the newest trend in precision perfect eyebrows, creating a subtle yet full and lush effect – perfect for standing out in the crowd during the festive party season!
Now, SHESAID readers, you can try the trend too, thanks to the talented brow technicians from Anastasia Beverly Hills.
Here, (see below) the eyebrow artists have shared their top tips to create an ombré look using their Brow Kit, $99, (pictured) available in an array of colours at beauty e-tailer Lulu and Lipstick via www.luluandlipstick.com.
The Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Kit contains five essential products to achieve perfectly arched and sculpted brows: precision tweezers, brow powder duo, brow stencils, mini duo brush and clear brow gel.
Ombre Eyebrows 101
- Measure from the inside crease of the nose up and make a slight mark. When holding your Anastasia stencil make sure the brow is inside your shape. Hold firmly to avoid smudging. Apply the darker side of the Anastasia Brow Powder Duo 1cm into the brow with strong strokes, following down to the tail on the bottom row of the brow.
- Blend the lighter and darker side of your Anastasia Duo Powder back to the beginning of the brow where you have made your original measurement. Blend through to the top of the brow to join into the stronger tone to fill your arch and the tail.
- For an accentuated and defined look, use the Anastasia Brow Wiz to fill any gaps or holes. This slim pencil creates precise lines for a strong and elegant finish.
- Apply one coat of the Anastasia Clear Brow Gel, using upward strokes to lift the Brow hairs to widen and neaten the brow. Blend your Anastasia Brow Powder Duo for a perfect ombré finish. The Brow Gel is also available in tinted tones for touch-ups and a more dense finish.
- For lift and an elegant profile, apply Anastasia Duality Highlighter – this will define the finish of your perfect brow and gives a 3D affect.
Next, lightly apply the matte end of your Duality Highlighter, aligning around the brow for coverage and a clean, defined finish. Finally, apply the shimmer end of your highlighter above the eye and follow the tail to lift the brow and open the eye.
- Lastly, apply a second coat of the Clear Brow Gel to set, blend and finish your beautiful ombré brow finish.
