How To Flawlessly Apply A Dark Lip

A dark lip is a staple makeup look which can take you from day to night with just a touch of coloured lipstick. Before applying it and heading out the door, however, there are a few tips and tricks we can all learn to make the most out of our bold lips, and to keep it from smudging throughout the evening.

Prep and prime

Before applying a dark coloured lipstick, it is essential to moisturise the area well. Since most darker lipsticks are ultra-drying, they can leave lips feeling patchy and brittle. Use a matte lip conditioner and gently pat it over both your top and bottom lips before applying anything else over the top.

Foundation

If your lips are slightly darker, use a damp cosmetic sponge and a tiny pump of your foundation to create one, consistent colour. This will also help the lipstick to last longer and won’t stain the lines in your lips.

Lip liner

Once your lips are all even, use a lip liner and start drawing the outline of your lips from the cupids bow (the middle). This can often be one of the most hardest places to line the lips, so use a light hand and slowly build upon this area.

If you want to over-draw your lips like Kylie Jenner does, it is best to elongate the sides rather than the cupids bow where its most obvious. Use a lip liner which is a similar shade to the lipstick or lip stain which you’ll be using later.

Lipstick

Since lipsticks are often a little difficult to apply straight from the bullet, a lipstick brush is a must-have to achieve a precise line. Simply dip it into the bullet, and carefully fill in the lips. If you do make any mistakes, use an angled cotton tip dipped in makeup remover to clean up any lines.

Lip stain

For long-lasting lipstick which requires little to no touch-ups, then a lip stain is just what you need. You can use your finger to blend it on the lips and can remove any excess product with a tissue. Lip stains generally last longer since they are more pigmented, and require less attention, even if you’re eating or drinking.

Gloss

To lock-in the colour, use a gloss which will also keep your lips cool and hydrated. Keep a plumping gloss in your bag and reapply throughout the evening – it’s perfect for women with dry, patchy lips.

Easy Tips For A Perfect Red Lip

A red lip product is one of the easiest ways to attract attention to those luscious, big lips. They are usually a little more difficult to apply since they can bleed, stain, and need a steady hand to be applied almost perfectly (unless you’re into over-drawing your lips, not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Before you embark on applying your red lipstick this weekend, read through our simple tips which make the process look so much easier!

Exfoliate

For a clean, smooth base, it is important to exfoliate the skin on your lips. Use a clean toothbrush and lightly massage over your top and bottom lips in circular motions. This helps to remove those dead skin cells, and also increases circulation, making them look fuller!

Moisturise

Right after exfoliating your lips, apply a nourishing moisturiser onto the entire surface. Choose a matte formula which won’t make your lips feel too rough, and will dry almost instantly. This is a crucial step since most darker lip colours have the tendency to completely strip the lips of their natural oils.

Liner

If you’re applying a dark lip for the first time, use a lip liner to carefully highlight the perimeters of your mouth. Make sure the point is sharp, then start from the middle and line your lips outwards. You also have the option of highlighting the cupids bow (little area between your top lip), or completely drawing over it.

Lipstick

Whether you want to use a stick, pencil, stain, or wet gloss, to add some colour to your lips, concentrate the product in the middle of your lips. This makes it much easier to distribute the product, and can be cleaned up easily if you make a mistake.

Contouring

This doesn’t need to be an option if you already have full-looking lips, but is a great way to non-surgically enhance them. Take a sharp white liner, and lightly colour the inside of your lips. Blend it slightly with your finger to create the illusion of depth.

Set

To avoid your lip colour from bleeding outside of your lips, it is important to set it with powder. Cover your lips with a tissue, then lightly dust some translucent loose powder over the top. This will help with any fall-out, and will keep your colour lasting for hours – even if you’re eating or drinking!

Tips For Applying Dark Lipstick

Whether you’re attending a dress-up party or simply want to try out a new look, nothing beats dark lipstick. You can pick one up almost anywhere, and they are guaranteed to easily transform your look in seconds.

However, before you can apply a dark lip, read our tips on how to prep your lips first!

Exfoliate

If your lips are chapped or slightly damaged, it’s best to carefully exfoliate your lips to remove these dead skin cells. The best way to do this without causing more damage is with a clean toothbrush. Carefully run the toothbrush over your top and bottom lip and move it in circular motions.

If you feel like your skin is getting a bit dry, apply a moisturising cream with the toothbrush. Wash-off with tepid water, and pat dry with a paper towel.

Scrub

Apply equal parts of sugar and water and mix to achieve a fine paste. Carefully run this back and forth over your lips to remove any additional dried-up skin. For best results, leave on for 3-5 minutes, then carefully wash off and dry. Your lips should feel super-smooth!

Hydrate

Keep your lips moisturised by applying a thick formula before using a lipstick. This step is extremely important because it won’t leave any lipstick residue between the lines of your lips (which is a nightmare to remove). Wait for the moisturiser to settle in your lips completely, and then jump to the next step.

Liner

Carefully line your lips with a sharp lip liner. This makes it so much easier to apply a dark lip, which can be quite tricky! Take care when you’ve reach the top lip (near the cupids bow), and use a cotton tip to remove excess product.

Lipstick

Use a lip brush to carefully colour in the rest of your lips. This step should be relatively easy if you have lined your lips well in the previous step. After you’re done, take a tissue and press it over your top and bottom lips. Use a setting powder and brush and press over the tissue – this will keep your lips looking matte all day long!

How To Wear: Dark lipstick

Dark, purple berry and burgundy lipstick shades are very “in” at the moment, with celebs like Lorde and the Kardashian sisters rocking a red wine-colored pout. Recently, Kate Hudson turned heads at the NYC Wish I Was Here premier, vamping up her usually bohemian look with a sexy Michael Kors number, complete with a dark lip!

To get Kate’s look, keep the rest of your makeup minimal. All you need is a coat of foundation and a lick of mascara. Also, keep your hair simple and off your face, drawing all the attention to your perfect pout. You might also want to stick to neutral-colorer clothing – you don’t want shades that clash with your lip color.

Before applying any lipstick, you should exfoliate your lips to remove excess skin that might cause your lipstick to clump or crack.

Dark lipstick can be a bit messy, and to help stay within the lines, you must line the edges of your lips with a matching lip pencil. Some makeup artists recommend filling in the lip with pencil as well to give you rich, longer lasting color.

Apply your lipstick – keeping within the lines – and blot when you’re finished.
