10 Tips For Colour-Treated Hair

Colour-treated hair might look amazing, but sometimes all the extra maintenance can feel a little daunting.

Rather than protecting your hair from all the elements, we have compiled your go-to list of tips for treating your hair, and making the colour last that much longer.

1. DO: Use an oil

Once your hair is damp from the shower, use a few drops of hair oil and work this into your ends. Rather than lathering up your locks from root to tip, keep it confined to your problem areas which could include split ends. Oils are essential because they help to mend the hair follicle, and make your hair look thick and shiny.

2. DON’T: Apply too much heat

Using too many heat products on your hair will only make it dry and brittle – this is common sense!

Why not take advantage of the warmer weather and let your hair air-dry naturally, rather then using a blow-dryer, straightening irons, and curling wands all in one go. Give your hair a rest at least one day a week, the extra frizz is worth it!

3. DO: Regular trims

Especially if your hair is bleached blonde, booking in those trims every 6-8 weeks is essential for smooth, silky hair.

4. DON’T: Make any drastic changes yourself

Although it might seem like the cheaper alternative, making a drastic change from blonde to black (or the reverse) will only damage your hair. Not to mention the huge risk of your hair turning orange in the process! If you do plan to colour your hair for the first time, use a permanent shade which will eventually fade back to your natural colour.

5. DO: Use a wet brush

Move over Tange Teezer, the Wet Brush is the new hair tool you must use! It helps to de-frizz and untangle your hair in one simple motion. The super-thin bristles won’t cause your hair to split and break (unlike other brushes), and is safe enough to use almost every single day.

6. DON’T: Use standard shampoo

Since your hair is coloured, it’s important to use specialised shampoo to prolong your colour. There are a number of products available to brunettes, blondes and even redheads to help seal the colour, and make it look shiny for longer!

7. DO: Use a sulphate-free shampoo

Sulphates are small chemicals found in a number of mainstream shampoo’s, and they have the ability to strip the colour out of your hair. Use specialised formulas which are packed with essential vitamins and nutrients to keep your colour from fading.

8. DON’T: Wash in hot water

Hot water dries out the hair, and could leave your colour looking dull and lifeless. Rinse your hair with cold water since it locks in shine, and keeps your scalp from drying up.

9. DO: DIY hair mask

Try your own hair mask packed with eggs, honey, apple cider vinegar, and olive oil to bring back the shine to your hair. This is beneficial for all hair types and textures, and won’t weigh it down. Apply from root to tip, and wash-off with shampoo after 1 hour.

10. DON’T: Colour it all the time

While sometimes it might be tempting to go back to the salon and add a few more highlights, this ultimately isn’t healthy for your hair. Allow it to breathe for at least 3 months before adding any additional peroxide to your ends.

How To Tame Curly Hair In Summer

Having curly hair can be both a blessing and a curse, but sometimes the humid weather doesn’t agree with those long, curly locks! The best way to keep it in control is to adapt a simple haircare routine which both emphasises and controls your curls.

Flaxseed hair gel

Keep your hair looking shiny and frizz-free by treating it to a hair gel every few weeks. Make this simple gel at home which won’t leave your hair feeling crunchy, heavy, or with a heavy residue at the roots.

All you need is 2 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of flax seeds, and aloe vera for extra protection. Boil over a medium heat, strain the water, then apply directly to your hair. You can leave it in as an overnight treatment, or simply apply to your ends before air-drying.

Moisturise

Did you know that curly hair is twice as likely to become frizzy? As a general rule, it’s best to stay away from haircare that includes alcohol and sulfate as main ingredients. Not only do these ingredients make hair look dull and lifeless, but they also strip away the natural oils from your scalp, which can cause dandruff.

Stay away from heat

We all know that heat damage is bad for all hair types, but can create the most visible damage to curly hair. Split ends, dull colour, flat roots are all common symptoms of heat damage which can often be difficult to cure.

Leave your hair to air dry at least once at week, or simply use a diffuser with the temperature on cool – this will be a life saver for your hair, and will maintain those bouncy curls!

Condition

Don’t use a heavy conditioner on you roots since this can really weigh down your hair. Instead, concentrate the product on your ends. Apply conditioner on freshly damp and shampooed hair, then comb the product through with a wide-toothed comb.

No brushing?

Stick to combing your hair with a wide-toothed comb which won’t cause more damage to your ends. Excessive brushing can lead to severe hair breakage, and it’s best to keep this to a minimum (or sometimes not at all, especially for curly hair that’s been coloured blonde).

Don’t over-wash

Since curly hair is naturally dry, it’s not always a good idea to wash it every single day. This can lead to a dry, itchy scalp and cause damage to your ends from the sulfate which is mostly found in shampoo and conditioners. Use a deep conditioning treatment every 2 weeks to keep your hair looking its best.
