If you need to know how to get fake tan off your hands, read this.
Getting glowing, sun-kissed skin just got a lot simpler.
Don’t look like a basketball these holidays.
While it’s cold as ice here in the Southern Hemisphere, over in Miami they’re currently in the midst of Miami Swim Week – where models are tanned, the cocktails are fruity and the sun shines brightly.
One lucky Australian, Rebecca Colalillo, has jumped to Miami to take part in the Nookie Swim Presentation, with her natural tan company, GlowByBeca, the official tan sponsor of the show.
Nookie Girls walked down the runway with bronzed and hydrated limbs, complimenting their bright and patterned Nookie Bikinis. Easy to apply, the models applied GlowByBeca tan with a tanning mitt the day before the show, which developed into a deep bronze colour by showtime.
SHESAID sat down for an exclusive chat with Rebecca on how to stay tanned during winter, and how to get that classic, Miami Swim glow.
What’s the best way our readers can stay tanned during winter?
In winter our skin dries up due to the constant wind blasts and changes in air conditioning. This can make tanning during winter hard, as you’ll have dry patches of skin. The very first thing to do when tanning at home is to exfoliate with a natural scrub in the shower, focusing on elbows, knees, ankles, feet and the backs of your hands. When you step out of the shower, pat yourself dry and don’t apply any lotions.
Your skin needs to be completely free of any other formulas in order to pick up the tan. Now, simply grab a tanning mitt, apply the GlowByBeca Chocolate Tanning Mousse onto the mitt and – making small circles – cover your skin, working fast but evenly. Then, wait to dry!
That’s the beauty of GlowByBeca, it’s quick drying and you can get changed instantly into loose clothing without the greasy feel after you’ve applied the Chocolate Tanning Mousse formula. My hot tip, though, is to switch your hairdryer onto yourself and dry your skin that way! It’s warm and effective.
OK, how can we make the tan last?
I like to apply a moisturiser every day to ensure skin stays hydrated throughout winter, meaning your tan will stay even. Our GlowByBeca Tan Extender is a light lotion, so it doesn’t feel too heavy under winter layers.
Plus it contains Aloe Vera, Pomegranate Extract, Shea Butter and Cranberry Extract to extend the life of your tan and keep you hydrated without the grease.
What about shaving? When should we shave our legs if we’re about to tan?
Shaving your legs the day before you tan allows time for your cuticles to close and you’ll avoid those dark tiny spots. You can run your razor over your legs again the day after you’ve tanned, just be sure to use a shaving lotion that doesn’t contain oil so that you keep the colour of your tan.
How did the Nookie Girls get the glowing bronze tans they had at Miami Swim Week?
The girls exfoliated the day before the show, and applied the GlowByBeca Chocolate Tanning Mousse in circular motions, concentrating on the outside of their limbs to make them look extra long. We then applied GlowByBeca Tan Extender on their whole body the day of the show, for a slight shine and healthy, hydrated glow. The tan will last them well into the week!
Ever wanted a perfect fake tan without streaky skin or orange hands? Bondi Sands Co-Founder and Director, Blair James shares exclusive tips on how to manage an easy streak-free tan at your own home. Keep reading to find out the number one trick to avoid any fake tan-related drama.
Tip #1: Skin preparation
This is the most important factor to achieving a streak free beautiful tan. EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE. Self tan will grab to any areas of dry skin resulting in blotchy patches and your tan flaking off in the coming days.
Tip #2: Shaving
Shaving is a major part of the skin preparation process – so if you shave your legs try to do so a day before applying your tan. By shaving the day before, your skin won’t be too sensitive and reactive to the self-tan. Also shaving prior to applying your tan means you do not need to shave over the top of your tan, which can reduce the length of your tan.
Tip #3: Showering
Once you have showered and exfoliated, wait 30 minutes before applying tanning lotions to ensure that your skin is dry – this will give the tan a greater chance of adhering to the skin. Never apply deodorant, moisturiser or perfume prior to applying tanning products!
Tip #4: Face
Before applying your self-tanning product to your face run an ice cube over the nose and surrounding areas. This will reduce the size of the pores so the lotion does not get caught and result in black spots.
Tip #5: Choose your shade
Choose the correct shade for you skin. If you have fair skin and want a dark tan try 1 application of a light/medium product, then reapply if you would like more colour instead of jumping straight into a Dark lotion, which may leave your tan looking unnatural.
Tip #6: Application
Always use a tanning mitt and start with a small amount of tanning lotion, no more than the size of a 20c piece – you can always add more as needed. Gently apply in a smooth circular motion when using tanning lotions and a long fluid motion when using foams or mousses.
Tip #7: Application
Leave the rough areas of the body such as the hands, elbows, knees, and feet to last, and only use the residue left on the mitt. For example when tanning your arms apply lotion to upper arm and forearm then do elbows and hands before moving on to your legs. Refrain from adding more product for these areas, as the rough skin will grab the tanning lotion quickly.
Tip #8: Brow line
The last thing you want is for your self tan to work its way into your brow line or hair line, so apply a small amount of moisturiser to your brow and hair line prior to applying your tan to you face.
Top #9: Finger/toe nails
Wipe your finger/toe nails with a cleansing wipe to prevent them turning brown.
Tip #10: Moisture is the key for tan maintenance!
The drier your skin, the faster your tan will fade. Moisturise twice a day to extend the life of your tan. Try to avoid other factors that may dry your skin such as salty water, chlorinated water or even showering with very hot water.

Who hasn’t had a fake tan fail at some stage? We’re talking orange palms, streaky legs and not to mention those terrible stains on light clothes and sheets. That’s all about to change with the help of THEIA – the first express tan remover that requires no scrubbing at all! All you need to do is spritz and wipe.
Creators Brie Stevenson and Michelle Young have launched THEIA on crowdfunding site Indiegogo and need your help to bring this revolutionary, game-changing product to fake tan lovers worldwide. Each purchase of THEIA on Indiegogo helps to bring the product one-step closer to department store shelves and creating a world free from bad fake tan.
The idea for THEIA came to Brie Stevenson – a makeup artist with 16 years experience – after years of seeing and hearing her clients’ fake tan horror stories. “I’ve had women in tears countless times before big events,” she explains. “My clients complained about the extreme measures they’d go to remove their tans. I’ve heard stories of people using industrial level kitchen scrubbers and even cases where they resorted to Ajax and Napisan baths.”
How does it work?
THEIA is a two-step system. To use, you simply spray the THEIA Express Tan Remover over any fake tan residue, wait two minutes, then wipe clean with THEIA removal cloth.
Follow by spraying the Liquid Micro Peel onto skin and begin small circular movements with your hand. The multi functional micro peel removes any remaining tan residue, removes dead skin cells, restores pH levels and leaves you with a boost of soothing, anti inflammatory botanicals.
So put down those toxic chemicals, stop scrubbing your elbows and knees and make sure to contribute to this amazing cause! THEIA is now available from $34 USD on Indiegogo. #goodbyefaketanfail

With the warmer weather fast approaching, this gives us the best excuse to stock-up on some of the best products for a natural looking tan. Whether you prefer a cream, spray, mousse or even a shimmer, below are just some of the easiest (and best products) to give you an amazing fake tan.
If you want an easy, hassle-free tan that dries in just minutes, then mousse is probably the best option for you. Moisturise your ankles, knees, neck, and elbows before applying any tanning product onto your skin. These place are most likely to attract all the colour, so keep them well hydrated to avoid this common mistake.
As a general rule, use two pumps on each leg, one pump on each arm, two pumps on your torso, and one on the back. Buff in the product with a tanning mitt, and instead of using circular motions, simply wipe the product downwards. This will create the most natural application, and won’t cause any streaks either. Pat well into your arms and legs to avoid white spots.
Sunescape Hydrating Self Tan Mousse, $39.95
For a quick sun-kissed glow, use an instant tanning lotion on your arms and legs. This will create the most natural looking tan on your skin without looking too artificial or over the top. The quick-drying formula is infused with shea butter and aloe vera extract to keep skin feeling nourished, and won’t cause it to dry-out. To avoid orange hands, use a wipe to quickly clean-off any of the residue from your palms.
ModelCo Instant Tan Self-Tan Lotion, $15
This is a little trick if you are absolutely terrible at tanning your hands and feet. Use a instant spray and mix together with a small (pea-sized) amount of moisturiser. Mix well, and let the formula dry on your skin for 3-5 minutes. Wash your hands with some soap and cold water, then pat-dry. Done!
Bondi Sands Summer Bronze Instant Tan, $17.99
To finish your entire look, achieve an all-body glow with a slight shimmer. The quick drying formula doesn’t settle into your pores, but instead gives skin an air-brushed look. One pump is enough for each leg, and make sure to apply in circular motions for a natural finish.

Give yourself the best fake tan ever this summer – without stepping out into the sun! Sunescape’s ultra-hydrating formula will give your skin a subtle pop of colour, and create a natural looking tan like you just spent a month in Maui. Before you apply tan, peek at our five exclusive tips by co-founder Lisa Williams on how to create a bronze glow.
Fake Tan Faux Pas No. 1 – Palpable Patchiness
To avoid a patchy tan, effective exfoliation is non- negotiable! The active ingredient in fake tan, DHA, can react with things like alcohol, so it’s important to ensure skin is exfoliated and clean, free from any perfume, oils, lotions and deodorant. Applying tan to areas where there is dry skin build up can also result in an uneven application, so make sure you thoroughly exfoliate knees, elbows and feet and apply a small amount of Sunescape’s Hydrating Body Butter (RRP $29.95) to these areas prior to application (this will limit the absorption of the mousse), and use product sparingly.
Fake Tan Faux Pas No. 2 – Unsightly Streaks and Smudges
Say sayonara to streaks and smudges by applying the tan to one area of the body at a time. Using Sunescape’s Self Tan Application Mitt (RRP $9.90), apply one pump of mousse to the mitt and focus on one area at a time using quick sweeping motions, blending the mousse until there are no streaks or untanned areas. Sunescape’s tinted formula ensures you can see exactly where you have applied your tan, ensuring a perfect application every time.
Fake Tan Faux Pas No. 3 – The Awkwardly Orange Complexion
While a white face and brown body is a true tanning no-no, avoid an overly orange face by using the residual product on the mitt rather than applying another pump, and always avoid your eyebrows and hairline.
Fake Tan Faux Pas No. 4 – Horrendous Hands
To avoid the “glove” look – whether it be untanned white hands or over-tanned orange paws – apply self-tan with Sunescape’s Applicator Mitt (RRP $9.90), and blend product on the top of your hands with Sunescape’s Hydrating Body Butter. This ensures a natural, graded colour.
Fake Tan Faux Pas No. 5 – Mismanaged Maintenance
The key to sustaining a patch-free tan lies in the upkeep. First up, when you’re ready to wash your tan off, make sure you have a quick rinse, not a long hot shower. The number one tan commandment though, is hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Apply an ultra-nourishing moisturiser like Sunescape’s Hydrating Body Butter (RRP $29.95) every day, and use a soap and sulphate free body wash like Sunescape’s Hydrating Shower Gel (RRP $19.95) when showering.
Featuring unique hydration boost technology, Month in Maui nourishes like no other tan on the market. Made using natural ingredients and Eco-Cert Approved DHA, the formula is also completely free from petrochemicals, parabens and animal cruelty.

Two Australian stay-at-home mums have gained international success with the invention of their new beauty product Skinny Tan which tans but also reduces the appearance of cellulite!
The two mumtrepreneurs, Louise Ferguson and Kate Cotton, re-mortgaged their home and maxed out their credit cards to make it happen, and recently appeared in England on the hit BBC TV show Dragons’ Den – a reality TV show in which budding entrepreneurs get three minutes to pitch their business ideas to five millionaires.
Skinny Tan immediately sparked interest from all five ‘Dragons’, resulting in a total of nine offers – a series record! – to help make the product available in both the UK and Australia.
Skinny Tan is the first self-tanner to combine a 100% natural tanning active with naturally derived body firming actives, free from the chemical DHA and instead includes a natural element derived from the seeds of the Brassica Napus plant.
SheSaid chats to Louise and Kate about their Dragon’s Den experience and their advice for other women wanting to start their own business…
What was the Dragon’s Den experience really like?
Dragon’s Den was probably the most terrifying but amazing experience of our lives. The pitch you see on TV is only 15 minutes however we spent nearly two hours in the Den. A lot of people think that the Dragon investors make their business decisions in a moment, however the reality of it is quite different. Even prior to the show the BBC undertake lengthy due diligence of your entire business and background.
The hours, days and weeks after the show were truly amazing! We were both on such a high after offers from five very wealthy and successful business people who loved our product and recognised what we had already achieved in Australia. The whole experience with gaining two Dragons ensured our recent launch in the UK was a huge success – we have sold £260,000 ($435,000) of product in just six weeks online.
What tips do you have for other women starting their own business?
Just do it! Have no fear and trust in yourself. Ensure your idea has appeal and endeavour to do the best you can with what you have. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice when you need it and take baby steps> With hard work and a vision – eventually you will succeed.
What, if anything, would you do differently with your business?
At this stage we wouldn’t change anything – even though we probably didn’t do everything right it was all a learning experience which can use going forward.
Describe a typical working day for you?
Some days are much harder than others, especially being mums of 2 young children. We typically work every minute when not looking after the children, cooking dinner or sleeping. We both live and breathe Skinny Tan.
What’s next for you and the business?
We would love to extend our market internationally and eventually rid the world of orange chemical tans. Our tanner is the first tanner to combine 100% natural tanning properties with a naturally derived cellulite active for a dual effect, helping reduce the appearance of cellulite. We are incredibly excited about the future of our brand!
We asked our friends at The Harem Beauty and Wellbeing for Women in Sydney’s CBD to give us the low-down on what a gal needs to know to prepare to bare her winter body this spring.
I’ve made this statement constantly since becoming a therapist (I’m sure I must mouth it in my sleep!). Still, we live in a society where people continually ignore information on the damaging effects the sun has on us. Let’s face it, we all love a tan, but it’s time to jump into the 21st century, girls.
Sunscreen is the only anti-aging cream on the market!
Australians suffers from premature aging of the skin more than any other country, and our sun is 70% responsible. Excuses, excuses! For those of you who would argue sunscreens are too oily or too heavy, Dermalogica have 5 sunscreens available which cater for all skin types. There’s a formulation for oily or dry skins; sensitivity; people who like a sheer tint; a booster 30+ that can be added to moisturisers; as well as full spectrum body wipes for quick applications, and a fake tan that contains a 15+. Phew! That pretty much covers everyone. Now you just need to get into a good habit. Leave your sunscreen it in the bathroom then after you’ve showered, you can apply it each morning after drying yourself. Easy!
What to look for
Get yourself a sunscreen that you are happy wearing. There is no use forcing yourself to wear one that doesn’t feel good, as that will be a short-lived phase. You need one that is therapeutic as well as SPF efficient, one that you can trust to do good things to your skin. Once you find it, make it your best friend, and you’ll develop a great lifelong habit.
Get cheeky and fake it! Fake tans have come a long way. They no longer make you look like you’ve overdosed on carrots or have an odour that would keep even your dog away. Most tans are now developed to react with molanacites in the skin which is exactly what the sun does to darken the colour of skin giving a truly natural result that you can lie through your teeth about and no one need know! Dermalogica fake tan has a SPF 15+, so not only will it give you a great natural looking tan, but it will also protect your skin from the sun.
Most salons offer fake tan application treatments, and for those new to faking it, this is an excellent way of demonstrating preparation of the skin before self-tan application. It will also show you just how easy and quick it is to fake it. Treatments are usually an hour and range from around $65.00 to $120.00.
