Butter London is quickly becoming a firm fashionista favourite for its catwalk-worthy, high-pigment nail lacquer colours. The brand encourages women to experiment with new colours, while walking on the safe side: its products are nasties-free, formulated without formaldehyde, dbp, toluene, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide and xylene.

And winter nail colour doesn’t have to equal boring: I’m loving the brand’s newbies, including its vibrant, stunning Patent Shine 10X turquoise Chat Up, bold Her Majesty’s Red and pretty-in-pink Loverly (pictured) – all delivered with a dash of Brit wit. They’re quick-drying, high-gloss, chip-resistant and contain calcium for stronger nails. Each nail lacquer is $25 available at nourishedlife.com.au.

Next up, The Nail Lab (TNL) is a beauty newcomer aimed at revolutionising the nail bar industry in Australia. It too offers cruelty-free products which contain the lowest toxicity. TNL lacquers do not contain toulene, formaldehyde/formaldehyde resin, DBP or camphor. The brand prides itself on staying atop new-season trends, such as these stunning, new metallics in an array of seriously delectable shades. Each nail lacquer is $15 in salon or at shop.thenaillab.com.au.

Bobbi Brown is also doing beautiful things for our nails this winter – I adore these gorgeous, limited-edition Sandy Nudes Collection nail polishes in Naked (left) and Nude (right). These rich, matte nudes from the beauty giant dry to a lustrous finish and will take you from day to night. Inspired by the warm hues of beaches around the world, the Sandy Nudes Collection is a welcome touch of summer in the deep, dark throes of winter. Find them at David Jones or bobbibrowncosmetics.com.

5 Ways To Make Your Manicure Last

An at-home manicure can last up to 7-10 days with some extra attention to detail. Prep your nails beforehand by using a nail strengthening serum, or simply a lightweight oil which will help keep nail-beds looking healthy.

Once you have perfected this step, here are a few additional tips to keep your manicure looking flawless for at least one week.

Maintenance

To keep your nails looking better for longer, it is important to trim them at least once a week. Common breakage can occur within the tip of the nail, so keep them short and sweet. Use a nail file to gently buff into a short curve, then apply a moisturiser to lock-in hydration.

Paint

Avoid lathering your nails with too many coats of nail polish. This will only build-up on the nail-bed, and cause cracks on arise on the sides. As a general rule, apply no more than 3 coats (including a top coat), to clean, healthy nails.

Hot water

Common tasks such as washing the dishes can turn a fresh manicure into a complete mess. Frequently use rubber gloves to protect your nails against the hot water, and keep your manicure looking brand new. Detergents and sponges also contribute to flakey nails, so rubber gloves are an absolute must-have in any woman’s kitchen!

Oil

Moisturisers and other creams are packed with oils which seep into the nail bed and create an uneven base for nail polish. But this doesn’t mean you should stop using hand moisturiser! Start with freshly washed hands, and pay attention to drying the nail beds properly with a dry towel.

Top coat

Finish your manicure with a top-coat to lock-in shine, and also protect your nails. Most formulas are quick-drying, so you won’t have to wait more than 10 minutes trying to awkwardly dry your nails.
