Bare Blossom’s Blooming Business

When Brisbane lawyer Adriana Woolf, 35, discovered she had an autoimmune condition and needed to limit the amount of toxins and chemicals she used on her skin, due to the increased risk to her organs, her entrepreneurial instincts kicked in.

A huge make-up lover, Adriana (pictured) set to work researching make-up ranges on the market and, unable to find a complete range that was low-toxin and chemical-free, she decided to make her own. She launched her natural mineral makeup and cosmetics company, Bare Blossom, in March 2013 after recognising a gap in the market for pregnancy-safe and vegan cosmetics like hers.

“Apart from having an endless array of make-up on hand, the best thing about running Bare Blossom is knowing that I am giving people a healthier alternative to what is on the market,” Adriana says.

“My mission has become educating the world about toxins in make-up and cosmetics and providing an alternative. I get extreme joy when Bare Blossom receives an email thanking us for providing a quality, toxin-free make-up line suitable for everyone from pregnant women to those with sensitive skin and autoimmune diseases. They are so happy that they can use make-up again.”

Now, with Bare Blossom ambassador, Miss World Queensland and model/presenter and producer Hailey Wilson (pictured) at the helm, Bare Blossom is a triumph of hard work and passion.

With degrees in both psychology and law, Adriana works as a lawyer alongside her husband Shawn at their Brisbane law firm. Somehow, the busy businesswoman also finds time to run Bare Blossom, a small, family-run business, which is seeing healthy sales in its first year of trade.

With repeat customers from as far away as New Zealand and the UK, Adriana is dreaming big, with expansion plans in place for national and international stockists. After being diagnosed with secondary Raynaud’s which is why she must wear gloves and a connective tissue disorder, Adriana’s new business venture made her more aware of her health. “It has made me more aware the importance of looking after yourself and your body. I think it’s important that this translates into all aspects of our life, including cosmetics and make-up,” she says.

“With an autoimmune illness, you have to deal with episodes (called flares) of being well and not being well – basically your body attacks you from the inside out.

“The hardest thing about this is constantly having to pay attention to your body and notice the early warning signs. If you don’t you end up having a flare that lasts for months at a time, which is exhausting.

“I find that extended periods of stress, not exercising and eating the “wrong” foods (specifically gluten and casein) will set my autoimmune system into overdrive. The main symptoms which I personally experience are joint pain, pins and needles and numbness in my hands and feet, as well as swelling of my fingers and feet. I also get psoriasis on my elbows, which I cover up with Bare Blossom!

“I think having a background in psychology has given me the understanding of the mental and emotional effects of not making time for your health and wellness.”

And in case you’re wondering what Adriana’s favourite Bare Blossom products are, she says she can’t live without the Mineral Foundation Powder, which has SPF15 and is gluten-free and vegan; Mineral Mascara, which has a rich colour and is long-lasting; and Mineral Lipstick, which gives lips a luscious feeling and glides on smoothly.

Bare Blossom beauty products do not contain any animal products or derivatives and common cosmetic nasties such as: bismuth oxychloride, ferric ferrocyanide, harsh chemicals, parabens, talc and more.

Who Said Sun Hats Aren’t Sexy?

We all need to prevent premature ageing and reduce our risk of getting skin cancer, so, protective sun hats are an essential item, in every women’s wardrobe. Millions of kids have had the sun smart message drummed into them and we now seldom see kids without a hat.

When it comes to women, though, we seem to neglect them. It’s probably because we either look awful in them, they don’t fit properly, they mess up our hair, they don’t exactly scream sexy; whatever the reason, we really do need to wear them more often. Particularly in our harsh Australian climate. So, if we really need to wear them, we may as well do it fashionably!

Experts recommend, when trying on hats, look at a full-length mirror. This is how others see us. Although it might suit your face, it may look disproportional compared to the rest of you. Lets face it, if we look crappy in something, we aren’t going to wear it! Using the following recommendations as a guide will at least provide a starting point.

Oval-shaped

Let’s begin with the jackpot winners because women with an oval face can wear just about any type of hat and pull it off. The tip to remember is to make sure the snug part of the hat, which fits around your head (known as the crown), is wider than your cheekbones but avoid going wider than your shoulders.

Oblong-shaped

Shortening your face and adding some width should be your primary objective. Try a hat with less height and a big floppy brim.

Rectangular-shaped

Very similar to tips for oblong faces. Try a full or uplifted brim and don’t add too much height.

Square-shaped

The most significant tip for you to keep in mind is that square hats, on a square-shaped face won’t do you any favours. They will accentuate your jawline. Try hats which will soften and lengthen your features.

Heart-shaped

The best type of hat for you is a medium brim, with a defining crown, to narrow the forehead. Avoid horizontal trimmings and you can afford to have a hat with a bit of height.

Diamond-shaped

The style advice, is similar to heart shaped, except you want to aim for a hat that widens the forehead. For you, horizontal trims, will work a treat. Once again, a medium brim is recommended.

Triangular-shaped

You too want to widen the forehead, so you can try any hat which adds width. Asymmetric brims and crowns with some height will work well to achieve the best look.

Round-shaped

The aim here is to lengthen your face, so try an irregular brim, which is wider than your facial structure, a vertical design and defined crown.

Now, apart from style, you really need to consider other factors like protection, comfort and practicality. Some hats contain SPF block-out and can add greater protection to your head and face. If you burn easily, this is a wise investment.

Then there are other varieties which contain hydrating gel crystals to keep your head cooler. If you need a hat to go and out in direct sunlight and heat, this may be a viable option. Plus, if the reason you don’t wear a hat is because it’s just too damn hot, this is a solution.

You also need to consider when and where you are going to wear a hat. If you frequently wear it in windy conditions, the last thing you want is a hat which you will need to hold onto your head or chase around. There are lots of fashionable hats around these days which will fit your head perfectly, so functionality is no longer an excuse.

You may find that having a selection of protective hats will be a better solution, particularly if you will be wearing it in various situations. Consider all the variables and make a choice which is best for you. We all need to start looking at wearing sun hats as an investment in our longevity and get over the barriers, which have been preventing us from wearing them. There are some comfortable, functional and stunning styles available so it’s about time we all go shopping!

Get The Look: Olivia Munn’s Glowing Bronze Makeup

We’re in love with celebrity makeup artist Katey Denno‘s bronze goddess makeup for Olivia Munn paired with a sexy golden smokey eye as seen at a recent TV appearance – one of our favourite beauty looks of the last few months. Like us, Katey loves natural and organic makeup, so here are some great green product recommendations.

Face

Katey started by applying La Bella Figura’s Rainforest Hydration Treatment and massaging into Olivia’s face and neck, then waited 20 minutes for it to absorb into the skin.

She then applied Vapour Organic Beauty’s Atmosphere Luminous Foundation Stick with a small foundation brush, setting it with a slightly damp beauty blender sponge.

Katey created that gorgeous luminosity by layering product, starting with RMS beauty (living luminizer) cream highlighter on areas of Olivia’s face that would reflect the most light in front of the paparazzi: the bridge of the nose, cheekbones and cupid’s bow.

To create those naturally glowing cheeks, she mixed two shades of Vapour cream cheek stick color in Torch and Courtesean  and swirled them around the apples of her cheeks.

She topped it with one of her favourite products, Dr. Hauschka powder bronzer, sweeping it over her skin with a large, fluffy, super soft powder brush. Katey’s brilliant tip when layering powder over cream is to make sure the cream product has set, so it doesn’t smear and create streaks.

To add definition, she used a small eyeshadow blender brush to blend Mauna Lao, from Alima Pure,  a matte brown bronzer, under the cheekbones.

Eyes

Katey used Kjaer Weis’ eyeshadows in ‘Charmed’ under her eye and over her lid, blending upwards to the brow for softness.

To create the golden smokey eye, she then used the same Dr. Hauschka’s matte bronzer in the crease and outer edge, using a fluffy eyeshadow blending brush.

She finished with lashings of CoverGirl Lash Blast in Very Black and a few individual fake lashes from Ardell.

Lips

Katey layered Olivia’s lips with Ilia’s Come Undone nude crayon, then Burt’s Bees Lip Gloss in Ocean Sunrise, and a sweep of Burt’s Bees Lip Shine in Wink to the middle of her bottom lip.

What do you think of Olivia Munn’s glowing makeup?
