Ever wanted to lighten your hair without using harmful chemicals which can damage your hair and scalp?
There are actually a number of ways to naturally lighten your hair which are safe to use for all different ages. Try some of our suggestions this summer without using ammonia or peroxide on your hair.
Lemon juice has been used for many years to bring out the natural highlights in blonde and brown hair. Apply it directly with your fingers, then use a comb to distribute the juice on your ends. Let it soak for 20 minutes, then wash with lukewarm water and mild shampoo.
Ever since I was a kid, my mum would fill a bowl with lukewarm water and drop 3-5 chamomile bags into the mixture. All you need to do is dunk your ends into the water, then wrap hair into a towel. Let it sit from 30 minutes, or air-dry naturally in the sun.
Treat your hair to a honey mask which will keep it soft and smooth, but will also lighten up your ends. Ideal for men and women with light brown hair since it will make it look shiny and clean.
Apple Cider Vinegar
The no-poo method (washing the hair without shampoo) has actually proven to lighten hair over time. Cleanse your hair and scalp with a mild apple cider vinegar solution which will give your hair natural highlights!
Who knew? Apply 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda onto your scalp which will help to keep your colour lasting for longer. This is also a great idea for men and women who want to keep their salon colour from fading fast.

It’s cold outside baby, but spring/summer is fast on its way: do you need your hair to go from drab to fab? New seasons are a great chance to revamp your hair style and try something new. Here, hair guru, Schwarzkopf’s national technical educator, Grant Withnell, talks us through the top spring/summer hair trends and how to get – and keep – amazing hair when the weather hots up.
New season, new look
Now that autumn/winter is over, it’s time for some summer fun! You can achieve a subtle change in your look by lightening your natural hair colour, but avoid heavy bleaching, Grant says. He recommends Schwarzkopf Nordic Blonde Lightening Spray to gradually lighten hair by working with the sun. The unique, heat-activated formula with Argan Oil lightens hair up to one quarter of a shade per application for a subtle, summer glow. Or, if you fancy going darker, Schwarzkopf’s Nectra Colour has 16 vibrant hues to choose from. “The best thing about this product,” Grant says, “is that it provides 100 per cent grey coverage, brilliant shine and exceptional nutrition for hair thanks to its unique formula.”
How to get beach hair
We all love tousled, summer waves, but seawater can actually be pretty harsh on your hair. After a swim in the ocean, salt crystals may form in your tresses, causing it to look dull and feel dry. To get that chic, beachy look without diving into the ocean, Grant says to use Schwarzkopf Taft Full On Surfer Chic Texturising Sea Salt Spray; you’ll get waves without the dreaded crunch. And, if you are heading out after the beach, but want to avoid looking like your hair has suffered too much sand and surf, Grant says to take a leave-in conditioner with you. Simply wash your hair at the public showers, apply the conditioner and voila! You hair will look shiny and soft.
Give your hair TLC
The hair guru says hair treatments are crucial all-year-round, particularly in summer after a long day in the sun, or at the beach. His top care tip? To use daily treatments such as Schwarzkopf’s Extra Care Normal Balance Leave In Conditioner and nourish your hair with Schwarzkopf’s Essence Ultime Omega Repair Hair Mask, after shampooing and before conditioning, to penetrate deep into the hair and restore healthy locks.
Use UV protection
While hair does not get sunburned, it still gets damaged by the sun, and a colour begins to fade and hair becomes dry, rough and brittle. The best way to protect your hair is by using hair care products with UV protection such as the Schwarzkopf Extra Care Ultimate Colour range. “The unique conditioning agents infuse hair with proteins and vitamins, while antioxidants and light filters protect the hair pigments from the bleaching effects of the sun,” Grant says.
Combat the chlorine
That ugly green tint you may get in your hair in summer is caused by the copper in chlorine. Grant says the best way to avoid this is to use a liquid, leave-in conditioner when at the pool, as these products dilute chlorine. In addition, rinse hair immediately after getting out of pool.
Fight fading colour
If your hair colour is dull, this is usually due to excessive exposure to sunlight and/or water. Grant’s top tip to keep your colour fresh is to use a colour-protect care range and avoid washing hair too much. You can also try using semi-permanent colours like Schwarzkopf Live Colour, which he says lasts for eight washes and freshens up natural or coloured hair, as well as adding great shine and vibrancy, without too much risk.
Split ends prevention
A great hair care regime is paramount to prevent split ends this summer. “Adopt a three-step regime: shampoo, conditioner and treatment, every time you wash your hair,” Grant says. In addition, use a leave-in conditioner regularly and apply a mask weekly for extra nourishment. And trimming your hair every six weeks will also help keep it manageable and split-end free. If they do occur, smooth the ends with Schwarzkopf’s new Extra Care 6 Miracles Oil.
Grant’s No.1 beach bag hair essential this summer is the new Schwarzkopf Extra Care BB Cream. “It provides 11 benefits in one,” he says, “including softness, shine, frizz control, deep nourishment and repair; perfect for any girl on the go this summer!”

Styles were bolder and bigger than ever at Hair Expo Australia this weekend. Showcasing the industry’s most creative talents, hair was manipulated and fashioned in architectural, gravity defying forms. You won’t believe these incredible looks were created using natural hair!
Introduced by feisty host Tabatha Coffey of Tabatha Takes Over, the team at The Art of Hair presented intricate woven braiding techniques.
Bringing new meaning to ‘helmut hair,’ this look had to be one of the team’s best.
International guest artist for Wella, Dmitry Vinokurov, achieved amazing height with this complex mohawk.
Next up were the talented Brits from F.A.M.E; the UK’s independent launch vehicle for young creative stylists. My favourite of their creations was this sculptural fringed look.
The GenNext Artisan collection included volumous tiers of cascading hair.
But the ultimate showstopper? It had to be the floral adorned hair clusters presented at the GenNext ‘La Biosthetique’ collection; where youth culture meets Parisian Haute Couture. Holy hairballs this looked heavy!
