Give me a break, celebrities.
It’ll be the loneliest time of your life.
Just don’t feel sorry for him while you’re watching it.
With the news that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have split (sob), it made us reminisce about all of the celeb couples that have shattered our hopes for forever upon calling it quits. Call us naive, but for some reason we find ourselves invested in Tinseltown romances as if our own, particularly when it’s a love story that unfolds on screen like that of The Notebook. Gush!
So, from rumours of infidelity, to infertility and “unconcious uncoupling,” let’s take a look at some of the hottest and most powerful Hollywood couples that have headed to splitsville over the years.
Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow
What started as a whirlwind romance that resulted in marriage barely one year of meeting each other, Chris and Gwyn last year called it quits on their ten year union, announcing in March that they were “unconsciously uncoupling.” What even!?
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
“If you’re a bird, than I’m bird.” Meeting on the set of The Notebook, true love seemed to blossom off-set as much as it did on; but despite an intense and somewhat envious relationship, the fire seemed to die somewhere along the lines. Both have since moved on, with Gosling recently welcoming a baby girl with girlfriend, Eva Mendes.
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman
This was a separation that shocked not only us, but apparently Nicole as well. Meeting in ’89 on the set of Days of Thunder, the couple tied the knot in December, 1990. After divorcing in 2001 amidst reports of infertility, Kidman was still picking up the pieces years later. “He was huge; still is. To me, he was just Tom, but to everybody else, he is huge. But he was lovely to me. And I loved him. I still love him,” she said in 2006.
Seal and Heidi Klum
In the limelight, this couple looked like they had it all: happiness, wealth and a strong marriage – often renewing their wedding vows every year. Upon divorcing nearly two year ago (after seven years of marriage), however, reports of anger management and infidelity surfaced. Cue, relationship goals crushed.
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
A seemingly unlikely union at first, Jen and Brad went on to be Hollywood’s golden couple from 1998 to 2005. Saying “I do” in 2005, they divorced 5 years later after Pitt reportedly cheated with Angelina Jolie. Describing it as a “painful” experience, Aniston finally found love again with Justin Theroux.
Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe
Interestingly, these lovebirds were introduced before shooting the hit movie Cruel Intentions, reportedly meeting on Reese’s twenty-first birthday when Ryan proclaimed himself as her birthday present – swoon! They went on to marry in 1999 and have two kids, before divorcing amidst cheating rumours in 2008.

Tom and Penelope call it quits
All over red roverActors Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz have decided to call their three-year relationship quits, according to reports from the States. The two met in 2001 on the set of Vanilla Sky, shortly after the breakup of Cruise?s marriage to Nicole Kidman. Cruise’s sister and publicist, Lee-Anne Devette, reportedly said that the couple broke up in January, and had managed to keep the news of their split quiet until now. She said the break-up was “amicable”. Robert Garlock, spokesperson for Cruz, 29, told People magazine the two “remain good friends”. He reportedly added that the split was not a result of Cruise’s religious affiliations, and confirmed that Cruz had not converted to Scientology. Sources revealed that neither actor is involved with anyone else at present. No doubt the romantics of the world are already hoping for a Cruise/Kidman re-union on the horizon? Don?t hold your breath!
The original Samantha – Elizabeth MontgomeryAh MacLaine, you’ve done it again
If you loved the hit TV series Bewitched then you will be happy to hear that not only has Nicole Kidman signed on to star as Samantha Stevens in the forthcoming big screen version. But that?s not all. Veteran actors Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine reportedly “look set” to play Samantha Stevens’ parents in the feature film, according toVariety magazine. And further casting news has funnyman Will Ferrell as Samantha?s hapless human, husband, Darren, aka Derwood. When will it hit our screens? That’s what we’d like to know?
Jen isn’t giving anything away on this one.Jennifer Garner single again
Is Jennifer Garner headed for the single bars again? Last year she split with hubby Scott Foley, whose career just happened to be taking a downturn at the time, then weeks later she revealed that her new lover was none other than Aliasco-star Michael Vartan. The couple was pleased when their relationship become public knowledge, as it meant they didn’t have to hide it any more. Jennifer said at the time: “Of course Michael and I are dating, it’s so new and exciting.” Apparently love in the public eye is a little too much for the the star, as IMDB.com now reports that the two have broken up due to the pressure of celebrity. One friend revealed: “Jennifer has been telling people she and Michael broke up.” But according the New York Post a spokeswoman for Jennifer has denied the couple have broken up. Guess we have to wait to see who is telling the truth on this one!
The blushing brideAguilera secretly engaged to marry
Christina Aguilera, 22, looks set to follow in girl-pal Britney Spears? footsteps and run off to Las Vegas for a quickie in the Chapel of Love. But who is the mystery man that has captured Aguilera?s heart? The young miss has been dating 27-year-old, Jordan Bratman, who works for her management company, for seven months. Now it seems the couple has decided to tie the knot although their marital plans were meant to be a secret. Jordan?s granny let it slip to reporters on Tuesday. “Jordan asked her in Los Angeles,” said 72-year-old Sally Bratman. “He called me and told me two days ago. I’m very happy they are engaged. His mum and dad are very happy too. I don’t know when the wedding will be – soon, hopefully.” Aguilera is already sporting an engagement ring, she said. “They have a ring and she’s worn it. I think it has a diamond in it, but I haven’t seen it myself.”
Sarah Wynter wows Hollywood in Ho!
Those Aussie babes in Hollywood sure do know how to get noticed. Sexy star of action TV drama series 24, Sarah Wynter, strolled down the red carpet in a stunning Lisa Ho frock, proving that Aussie designers sure can certainly cut it along side the best haute couture designers in the world. What a brilliant Australian combination!
Everybody loves Patricia Heaton
Fabulous mum and Everybody Love Raymond star, Patricia Heaton, looked stunning in a white Ralph Lauren shift at the recent Emmy awards. Never one to shy away from publicity, this yummy mummy (she?s got four boys!) looked like a million bucks ? even if she is rumoured to have had a bit of help from her friendly plastic surgeon. If you?ve got it, flaunt it, we say.
Sexy assassin Jennifer Garner from the hit TV show Alias looked stunning in a slinky peach satin number. But where for art her trusty co-star turned lover Michael Varten. And what?s happened to Jennifer?s trademarked washboard stomach? Could it be the beginnings of a maternal middle for the star?
Queen of the Prom?
Sarah Jessica Parker looked more prom queen than sex kitten in her choice of frocks at the Emmys. The frothy Chanel frock did have one fab feature, the bell-like hemline that lifted up at the front to reveal a gorgeous pair of Manolo Blahniks for all to see. And while her post-baby bod looked fab in this pale pink frou frou number, her obvious tan lines were a little bit of worry.
Kim Cattrall flashes some flesh
Is there ever an age where too much flesh is inappropriate? Kim Cattrall doesn?t seem to think so! Being single and over 40 sure seems to suit her. Looking more like a Californian babe in LA than Samantha from Sex in the City, she rated highly in the best-dressed category for this industry night of nights.
Kidman wins libel case
Nicole Kidman has won an apology from London?s The Daily Mail after the newspaper ran a story suggesting that Kidman was being dishonest about her relationship with fellow actor, and Cold Mountain co-star, Jude Law. She was also awarded “substantial” undisclosed damages, successfully suing over the newspaper?s statement that she had tempted Law into an adulterous affair that resulted in the (very public) breakdown of his marriage.
“The publication of this article has caused grave damage to the claimant’s personal and professional reputation and she has suffered considerable embarrassment and distress,” solicitor Gideon Benaim told Mr Justice Gray, in the London High Court. “Her embarrassment was particularly acute as the allegations coincided with the run-up the Oscars award ceremony in Los Angeles in which she had been nominated for an award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in The Hours.” In a triumph of truth over evil, editor of The Daily Mail, Paul Dacre, and journalist Nicole Lampert apologised for the distress and embarrassment caused to Kidman and agreed to pay her legal costs as well as damages. The libelous pair also agreed that the allegations were completely untrue and totally without foundation. Looks like they picked the wrong Aussie chick to brand an adulteress this time!
Double agent seeking double pay?
Arse-kicking double agent Jennifer Garner looks set to get a massive pay rise according to the Hollywood Reporter. Apparently the rising star is close to signing a new contract extension that will keep her on the spy drama Alias through the 2007-2008 season and increase her salary from approximately $80,000 an episode to a cool $300,000 an episode. Great work if you can get it!
Ben and Jen’s film sucks say critics
Ben and Jen?s new flick Gigli is being panned ferociously by critics in the US, the movie has even been compared to Madonna’s last cinematic washout, 2002’s Swept Away, which had the unenviable title of the worst film for 2002. Halle Berry is surely thanking her lucky stars that she dropped out of the mobster romance/drama just before production began in late 2001. Miss Jennifer Lopez was quick to step up as leading-lady opposite her beau Ben Affleck. They say the rest is history but some critics are making sure Gigli goes down in history as one of the worst films of 2003!
Gigli – ?unwatchable?“Nearly as unwatchable as [its title] is unpronounceable.” Los Angeles Times
“Hopelessly misconceived exercise in celebrity self-worship.” New York Times
“The rare movie that never seems to take off, but also never seems to end.” USA Today
J.Lo and Ben ? never again
There is some good news for the Ben/Jen show. At least one major critic in the US, The Chicago Sun-Times?, Roger Ebert calls the movie “different, thoughtful and a little daring.” He also stands up for the couple’s ability to couple on screen, not an easy task since Lopez’s character in this flick is, wait for it, a lesbian. Meanwhile in India, the Hindustan Times reveals that the real-life lovebirds, Lopez and Affleck, have vowed to never, ever make a movie together again. And by the sounds of it, it?s probably for the best.
