The most handy thing in your purse right now has got to be your lip balm. This all-purpose miracle tube can soothe dry hands, tame stray eyebrows and keep down those dreaded flyways after a blow-dry. Oh, and it also keeps your gorgeous smackers totally kissable – even when the wind kicks up and the harsh, cool air threatens to strip those lips of any and all moisture. Here are our picks of the best balms at each price point:
Make Up Store Lip Care Mix, $35
This handy pot is an amazing 3-in-1. The green cream is for exfoliating the lips to get rid of dry flakes and make them smoother. The white cream is a moisturiser and can also be used to remove excess lipstick when cleansing. And finally, the pink cream finishes off the treatment with sweet shade of colour.
asap Hydrating Lip Balm+, $20
asap Hydrating Lip Balm+ perfects, heals and protects. It’s suitable for all skin types and contains a powerful antioxidant that even keeps coldsores at bay as well as acting as an anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory agent. This lip balm can be used on its own or as gloss over lip colour and even contain SPF15+.
Suvana Organic Lip Balm, $9.95
This certified organic lip balm may as well change its name to ‘miracle in a tube’. The active ingredients of cocoa butter, paw paw and honey nourish, soothe and soften … not just your lips, but wherever you happen to rub it! A little goes a long way so it’s a keeper. Stash in your handbag as your go-to wonder cream!
Lip Gloss Off!
L’oreal Glam Shine
If you want a lip gloss that stays on and is not too sticky then this is the one you have been searching for. Glam Shine definitely lives up to its name – this product doesn?t stick your lips together but has tons of shine! There are a great range of colours and is perfect for a night on the town, dancing under lights, but not for everyday use. Well priced at RRP $19.95.
Maybelline Wet Shine
Love it love it love it! Many critics have said its colour doesn?t last and leaves lips feeling dry but we beg to differ in this case. The colours are really pretty (personal favourite is the ‘Luminous Lilac’), the gloss brilliantly glossy and there isn’t too much sparkle so you don?t look like you are on your way out for a big night rather than on your way to work! The only problem I have with Maybelline?s Wet Shine is that they’re not long lasting, but I guess that’s to be expected from a non-matte,shiny lipstick. For only RRP $9.95, the price is one of its best assests too ? this one definitely won’t break your budget!
Lancome Juicy Tubes
Juicy Tubes seems to be one of those things that people either love or hate. And you can guess which group I am in… If you want something sticky, shiny, with a mildly coloured gloss to it then Lancome?s Juicy Jube is for you. You can get the same (or even better) products in Maybelline or L?Oreal without the huge price tag, proving that cheaper can sometimes be better! The texture is annoying, plus virtually no color shows up. At over $40 a tube this is just very expensive, coloured vaseline in a tube!
Elizabeth Arden High Shine Lip Gloss
If you are a self-confessed gloss-o-holic then you might not rate the Elizabeth Arden High Shine Gloss as it is unlike any of the other glossies we tested. The beautiful packaging and classy colours prove it is not aimed at the teenagers with the slick, shiny wet-looking, gooey lips. This gloss is a beautiful smooth texture with enough colour and shine to wear happily all day long, not only that is smells great too! A definite winner! RRP $30
Nivea Lip Care Pearl & Shine
This isn’t really very glossy so you need something else for colour but it’s just so soft that you can’t resist wearing it. The jojoba oil and Vitamin E protect against the elements making it definitely the best for moisterising. The pearly shimmer gives your lips a softer, plumper appearance, and you can’t past that $3.70 price tag.

- Lancome Juicy Tube in
We can?t get enough of Lancome?s juicy tubes. They are fast becoming a cult beauty necessity. This colour will look just like you?ve been kissed. It tastes as good as it smells. Mmmmm mmmmmmspan class=”articleTitle”>Mascara ? how do you wear it?
These days mascara?s can almost do anything, lengthen, thicken, add volume, define, curl? and find you a husband, no just kidding. So, is it really necessary to spend a lot of money on them? Make-up artists do admit that the more the mascara costs the more it will probably do and be easier to apply; need fewer coats and have a better brush.
Now we hope you are not panicking. If you don?t have enough money to spend on expensive mascaras don?t fret. A cheaper version, if applied properly will give the same result. One of the tools you do need is an old mascara brush ? any type of brush will do. Remember, make-up artists insist that the brush is the most important tool when applying mascara.
- A dry brush ? check out Body Shop or David Jones make-up brushes
- Eye-lash curlerWhat to do:
To get your eyelashes to bend, try running the eye-lash curler under hot water, blotting it and then curling. The warmth will increase the curling process and increase the hold. One make-up artist suggested you heat the eye-lash curler up with your hairdryer. But do be careful that you don?t touch your eyelid with the curler when it is that hot. Ouch! One of Naomi Campbell?s hottest tips from the 90s.
After you have curled your lashes, start by tilting your head back and raising your brows. This will help you hitting your eye socket with the brush and ruining the application.
Now, for the mascara application. Pick up the lashes with the brush and wiggle it back and fourth and push the brush toward the eyelid. When you feel the brush touch the lid you then release it. That way you are actually coating the lashes right the way down to the base of the hairline which will give you the thickest and most natural coverage.
If you find that your mascara brush has not been the best or your lashes aren?t separating evenly, use the dry mascara brush to smoothe them out.
Once you have applied one coat of mascara, apply a second one. If you can try to apply the second coat before the first coat dries to avoid flaking you will then have beautiful, perfect eyes.
- Johnson’s Baby Lotion This is one of the most versatile products around. The best way to use Johnson’s is to use it as a primer under make-up or for a leave-in-hair conditioner and styling product. The great thing about this product is that it is great for anyone who has really sensitive skin.
- Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara This is what all the models and pro’s use. If you want your eyes to stand out you have to apply mascara to both your upper and lower lashes. The other great thing to Great Lash is the GREAT price.
- Benetint Benetint is great for everything? for blush and lips. It gives you a really natural colour that looks like you have just been kissed.
- Carmex Lip Balm A lip balm that I love. It has salicyclic acid in it which will help to exfoliate the lips and is incredibly moisturising. A pot of gold.
- Clinique’s Black Honey lipstick This is the ultimate version of a great berry-coloured shimmer lip gloss. It is a perfect lip colour for every type of woman.
