Get The Look: Miranda Kerr’s Luscious Berry Lips

Supermodel Miranda Kerr has the perfect base for almost any makeup look, with just one of our favourites including a deep-red lip stain. This trend is really easy to master (even for beginners), and lasts for hours even if you’re eating and drinking.

We share some of the best ways to apply your lip stain, and how to get Miranda’s trendy look this season.

RELATED: How To Apply Lip Stain

Liquid

Most lip stains are quite opaque, meaning they are packed with colour and rarely give you a natural, glossy look. Use a liquid lip stain to create a subtle pop of colour on both your cheeks and lips. The best way to apply this is with your fingers, and pat gently onto moisturised lips.

Crayon

Just like liquid lip stains, crayons are easy to apply and give you a lot of control. Start by lining the lips, then colour the inside. Fix up any errors by dipping an cotton bud into a micellar water, and dabbing the surrounding area.

Stick

If you want your lip stain to stay on for hours, then a stick is your best option. Use a lip brush to carefully fill in any gaps, and reach those difficult places. Make sure to moisturise and exfoliate your lips before using a dark shade, since these colours have the tendency to emphasise cracks and dry patches.

Marker

While the thought of applying a marker onto to your lips may feel rather unsettling at first, it’s one of the best ways to maintain a bright colour. Make sure to firstly line your lips, then dab the product from top to bottom. It will take just a few minutes for the first layer to dry, before applying a second for a deep glow.

Moisturise

Keep your lips feeling hydrated by moisturising well before applying a lip stain. These formulas are known to be a little more harsh, and can disrupt the delicate nature of your skin. Add one coat, and wait for it to completely absorb before applying a lip stain over the top.

Gloss

If you’re not a fan of the matte look, use a clear gloss over the lip stain. Not only does this help to lock-in the colour, but will also create the illusion of luscious lips – just like Miranda!

5 Unique Makeup Looks For Your Wedding

Tired of all the mainstream makeup looks that brides are constantly using for their wedding day? What a coincidence, so are we! Rather than wearing the same-old glossy lip and dewy skin combination, we have pulled some inspiration from the recent shows at New York, Milan and Paris fashion week which are also appropriate for any bridal look!

Dewy skin

Where: Valentino Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear

Well, maybe we love dewy skin a little bit too much to let this one go! For this look you don’t need to venture out and create a large contouring spectacle of yourself. Keep it simple and use a foundation which is almost identical to your natural skin tone. The only way to make this look natural is by buffing the product really well into the skin – by using a Beauty Blender.

Lightly run some cold water over the sponge, squeeze out the excess water, then dab the foundation into the skin. Make sure to moisturise well before applying any makeup, since this is a foolproof way to avoid any dry patches.

Where: Balmain Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear

If your skin needs a little vitamin D before the big day, don’t fret! Bronzer can be your best friend if applied correctly, and more importantly – blended out really well. Bring a little life to your skin tone by concentrating the product onto the apples of your cheeks, and blending it out into the hairline.

Dip the blush brush lightly into a cream or powder, tap it against the lid to remove any excess product, then apply onto the cheeks. It’s always easier to add more product, since this look can be extremely sun-kissed if used incorrectly – less is more.

Too scared to go for a bold-lip on your wedding day? Choose the second best option and try and lip stain instead. You can still use your desired lipstick, but there’s a slightly different process to mastering this look. Firstly, you need to exfoliate your lips really well – a few days before the wedding at least.

Take a clean toothbrush and run it across both your top and bottom lips to remove any dry patches or excess skin. Then apply a hydrating moisturiser and let your lips soak in the product before applying the lipstick. We have a step-by-step tutorial on how to apply a lip stain, which will tell you everything you need to know.

5 Unique Makeup Looks For Your WeddingCat-eye flick

Where: Emilio Pucci Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear

Did you think we forgot one of our all-time favourite looks, the cat-eye? Give this classic flick a bit of a modern twist by drawing the flick just above your lash line. If you suffer from oily eyelids, you might want to avoid this – since it probably won’t last very long without smudging.

The best way to master this look for all eyes is to keep the flick small and close to the lash line as possible, especially if you have hooded eyes. Use an eye primer before starting, and dab it into the eyelid until it’s completely set.

5 Unique Makeup Looks For Your WeddingStrong brows

Where: Boss Spring 2015 Read-to-Wear

Regardless of your makeup look for the big day, you cannot forget to fill in your brows… ever. Depending on the shade of your brows, you might need to use 2 different shades to achieve a natural look. Take turns between applying the product and using a brush to make it look like it’s your own – this is the best way to achieving flawless brows each and every time.

If your brows are a bit unruly, run a little eyebrow gel into the arch to keep it from smudging throughout the festivities.

5 Spring Makeup Trends

Ever wanted to be ahead of the curb and incorporate some new makeup trends into your usual routine? Even though we’re still in the midst of winter, we have compiled a list of makeup looks which are sure to be huge, during the spring and summer months ahead.

Lip stains

Pretty-in-pink lip stains are a fun trend throughout the entire year, since they include a pop of colour into a mundane makeup look. Achieve this look by gently dabbing your favourite lipstick onto clean lips. Then simply add a touch of pressed powder over the top for the much-coveted stain effect.

We recommend: Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Vernis Glossy Stain, $50

Voluminous lashes

Rather than getting eye-lash extensions, save yourself a bit of cash and work on volumising those natural lashes. Many lash serums help to strengthen eye-lashes and prepare them for mascara. Don’t forget to curl your lashes before carefully applying mascara to both the top and bottom!

We recommend: Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes, $40

Dewy skin

Forget about that matte finish – spring is all about achieving a dewy look to your foundation. Swap those full coverage foundations for a much lighter application, so your skin can also breathe and catch a break. Tinted moisturisers and BB creams offer light coverage and work with the skins natural texture.

We recommend: BECCA Luminous Skin Colour, $68

Coloured liner

Sometimes black eyeliner can prove to be too harsh – especially for girls with light blonde or strawberry blonde hair and a pale complexion. Opt for navy, purple or brown liners which bring a pop of colour to tired eyes, and will cheer up your entire look; minimal effort required.

We recommend: Revlon ColorStay Creme Gel Eye Liner, $24.95

Luminous cheekbones

A clever highlight and illuminating combination is often the secret to luminous and glowing cheekbones. A little goes a long way, so don’t try and pack it all on at the same time. Gently work the product into the skin with a damp beauty blender, or your ring finger since heat will allow it to set into a natural finish.

How To Apply Lip Stain

Looking for a quick and easy way to make your lips pop without using lipstick? Lip stains are a great way to draw attention to the lips, by using fun colours and finishes which are sure to spice up your usual makeup look. They are also extremely easy to apply and aren’t very daring if you’re worried about being too bold with your daily makeup.

Lip stains generally work in two different ways. Firstly, you could use a lip stain to enhance the natural colour of lips without using too much product. But they can also be used as a base to create a long-lasting makeup look when paired with gloss, which generally doesn’t require much re-application throughout the day or night.

Directions

  1. Before even applying a stain, make sure lips are smooth by exfoliating them. There are many lip-exfoliators out there on the market which work well to remove excess skin from the lips. Another inexpensive way is to take a dry toothbrush and rub it in circular motions over the top and bottom lip. This will lightly exfoliate the area and make it easier to apply a lip stain which will last even longer.
  2. Using your fingers, simply apply the product softly onto the lips, then pat into the skin. This will allow the product to stay on for longer, and especially moisturise and replenish dry or cracked lips.
  3. If you’re going for a more glamourous look, you can now apply a thin layer of gloss over the top and bottom lips to accentuate the area. Make sure to also highlight the Cupid ’s bow to complete the look, and draw attention to this area of the face.

Lip stains are fairly easy to apply, since they don’t require a particular technique to achieve a stunning look. Simply choose a colour which matches the rest of your makeup, and compliments your skin tone.

Tips

  • Lipsticks can also work well as lip stains if you really like a particular colour and can’t find it in another form. Simply dab the colour onto the centre of your lips, then blend it out with a lip brush. This will make the colour look fresh and clean on your face.
  • Never apply a lip gloss before the lip stain. This will most likely ruin the entire makeup look, and won’t blend in with your lips very well. Always apply the lip stain first, since this will settle into your lips, then the lip gloss which locks it into place.
  • For beginners, use a lip stain which is close to your natural lip colour. Since lip stains aren’t easy to remove, it is best to start off with nude or pinkish hues since they are safe to work with and won’t necessarily stain the lips unlike other bright or darker colours.
  • Try and avoid using a lip stain on cracked lips. This will only cause more pain and could lead to tearing and make the entire area sore. Take care of your lips by regularly using a lip cream with a high SPF.
