Long Vs Medium Celebrity Hairstyles – Which Was Best?

Have you ever cut your hair only to regret it later? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there and luckily for us, hair grows back so your bad haircut wont be sticking around for long. Sometimes though, a haircut is a great change and we are left wondering why we didn’t take the plunge sooner. So for some inspiration here are some celebrities who’ve been bold and chopped off their locks.

Katie Holmes has had every haircut under the sun – pixie, short, medium and long, all of which have looked incredible. But my favourite between these two? Definitely the long girl-next-door look which shows off her gorgeous waves.

Julianne Hough recently chopped her long locks and went for a blunt medium length cut instead and I think it suits her face shape a lot more. It’s far easier to maintain this way and she frequently adds a few soft waves for a completely different look.

Kate Hudson has had many different hairstyles but her long locks are hard to go past. With subtle layers and soft waves longer hair really suits her face shape and makes her look younger too.

Taylor Swift boldly chopped off her signature curls, but should she have? Absolutely! Her trendy medium-length cut makes her look more mature and incredibly stylish. Two words – love it.

Jennifer Aniston made the medium-length layered look famous when she starred on Friends, however I prefer her hair longer when she’s able to put more layers in it for some texture. She frequently wears her hair swept over to the side which really compliments the shape of her face.

5 Long Celebrity Hairstyles We Love

Struggling for ideas on how to style your long hair? From Elle Macpherson’s signature long locks to Isla Fisher’s bombshell waves, we’ve chosen our favourite long celebrity hairstyles to inspire you, with tips on how to recreate the looks at home.

Elle Macpherson’s beachy waves
Elle gives us serious hair envy, and there’s good reason why she’s rarely sported short hair – with locks this long and luscious, you’d be mad to chop them off. Beachy waves are effortlessly beautiful, and a favourite celebrity hairstyle of everyone from Elle to fellow beach babe Blake Lively. This is a great style if you’re growing out a fringe, just brush it to the side and let it blend in with the waves.

To recreate Elle’s beachy waves, blow dry wet hair on low heat. Add a tiny bit of styling gel, and then ruffle the hair with fingers. We also love spraying hair with sea salt spray with gives it a natural, just-back-from-the-beach vibe.

Sarah Jessica’s Parker’s super straight hair
Another fabulous after 40 celebrity rocking gorgeous long hair. Who says you have to cut your hair when you get older? If your hair is long and strong, bravo! Sarah transitions from big waves to super straight hair, and looks gorgeous in her current incarnation with shiny golden hair with a centre part and layers around the face.

As long as your hair is in good condition, poker straight hair is one of our favourite long hairstyles. Blow dry your hair, mist with a heat protection spray, then smooth and straighten with a flat or straightening iron. Finish with a light hairspray to tame flyaways and protect from humidity (the enemy of straight hair!).

Kim Kardashian’s loose waves
Kim Kardashian is the queen of celebrity hairstyles, changing her hair colour and cut every other week it seems, and she’s just gone back to brunette after a blond phase (for her first Vogue cover). We love the caramel highlights to stop the hair colour looking too flat.

Kim’s thick, slightly wavy hair is easy to achieve if you have straight or naturally kinky hair. Blow dry your hair straight, and gently curl a few strands around the face and back of the head, brushing out to keep the curl soft and loose.

Isla Fisher’s 1920’s curls
Isla Fisher’s soft, bouncy curls never go out of style. It’s such an elegant, feminine look that compliments any outfit from your favourite summer dress to evening glam. Isla Fisher has worn different variations of glam curls to nearly every red carpet event, never better than at this year’s SAG Awards cascading over one shoulder.

Long curls are easily compatible with a fringe, layers and different hair textures. Luckily, you can achieve the same look at home with a one and a half-inch curling iron and a smoothing serum to tame flyaways.

Abigail Breslin’s half updo
We love Abigail Breslin’s half updo is a less formal hair up style that’s perfect for parties, weddings and weekends. It’s just the right side of a 1960’s hairstyle, not too bouffant, and frames her face nicely.

Recreating this hairstyle at home is not as tricky as it seems. All you need is a curling iron, a backcombing brush, bobby pins, and a firm hold hairspray. Just curl the hair all over, take two sections from either side of your face and pin  in a chignon or bun high at the back of the head. Secure with hairspray and you’re set!

Celebrity Hairstyles: Sexy, Straight Hair

Supermodel Cara Delevingne might reinvent her look from one day to the next, but she’s the queen of one of our favourite celebrity hairstyles – sexy, straight hair. What sets this look apart is finishing the style with a few softly tousled waves so it doesn’t look too stiff and unapproachable. If you have medium to long hair, this is such a pretty look for summer that will take you from coffee to cocktails. Here’s how you can recreate this on-trend hairstyle in just five easy steps.

1. Prep your hair with TRESemme Keratin Smooth Shampoo & Conditioner to create a smooth foundation. TRESemme stylist Joh Bailey’s smooth style tip: “When you are washing your hair ensure you are massaging the product in a downward direction from the top of the hair cuticle to the bottom to prevent it from frizzing.”

2. Spray damp hair with TRESemme Keratin Smooth Heat Protection and Shine Spray and comb through from the root to tip. This lightweight spray will reduce the frizz.

3. Blast the hair dry, using a strong bristle round brush, pull your hair downwards, moving the dryer down the hair slowly to remove moisture.

4. Use a comb to create a central parting and straighten the length of the hair with an iron.

5. Take sections of your hai and wrap the iron around the lower half to achieve soft and messy waves. Set the look with a sprtiz of TRESemme TRES 2 to hold.

Get The Look: Bombshell Hair

The hair look at the DSquared2 Spring/Summer 2014 show at Milan Fashion Week was a modern interpretation of 1950’s Americana, reminiscent of the tropical enclaves of Miami, Las Vegas, Havana and Hawaii.

“The Dsquared2 designers always favour a glamorous ‘bombshell’ look, and this season the collection has a tropical, sexy ‘50s feeling to it, so I created super volume and a slightly bouffant hair look to support this” said Sam McKnight, Global Ambassador for Pantene.

The resulting ‘retro poolside chic’ look is resonant of a bygone era where manicured looks and perfected style were de riguer at the poolside, and is the perfect summer hairstyle for medium to long hair, whether your hair is straight, wavy or thick. It’s also a fun bridal hairstyle to match with bright lips and a va-va-voom dress.

1.       Always start with freshly washed and conditioned hair. Pantene Ice Shine Shampoo and Conditioner provides the perfect base for this look.

2.       Apply  Pantene Styling Treatment Foam Soft Curls to damp hair and blow dry the hair section by section using a round brush to create volume, taking the hair up and away from the face.

3.       Then, using a medium –large barrelled tong (depending on length of hair), set the hair (section by section), clip in place and leave to set – for as long as you can.

4.       Remove clips and brush out the hair with a soft bristle brush.

5.       Take the crown section of hair and gently tease (back-comb) the crown area with a tail comb.

6.       Using a very soft brush, brush back the hair over the teased section and brush through the lengths.

7.       Finish with Pantene Stay Smooth Hairspray and apply Pantene All Day Smooth Leave in Crème to smooth the ends.

Get The Look: Perfect Messy Bun Hairstyle at NYFW

We love the messy bun hairstyle for day and night but it’s hard to get it just right – it can either look too undone or too ballerina. This is it: the perfect messy bun as seen at the Peter Som Spring/Summer 2014 show at New York Fashion Week that is both chic and on-trend.

It’s a great way of transforming a bad hair day into an effortless hairstyle for anyone with medium to long hair (and we love the messy bun on Jennifer Lawrence in the latest Miss Dior campaign).

Here’s how celebrity hairstylist Eugene Souleiman, Wella Professionals Global Creative Director of Care & Styling, created the look in a few easy steps.

1. Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair, using Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner, to ensure hair is in perfect condition.

2. Spray Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz liberally at the roots and throughout the length of the hair. Do not comb through.

3. Blow dry hair upwards at the root in circular motion, to create natural volume.

4. Pull hair into a high ponytail, between the occipital and crown, and secure with an elastic band.

5. Twist ponytail and tie into a knot, securing with several pins.

6. Spray hair again with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz and blast with a blow dryer to add more texture to the hair.

7. Gently pull a few pieces of the hair out, creating looseness and imperfection in the look.

8. Finish by pumping a dime size amount of Wella Professionals Mirror Polish into hands, rub together and apply to the roots of the hair in an upward motion for shine-enhanced texture.

Get The Look: Lea Michele’s Messy Braid Hairstyle In 4 Steps

We’re loving Lea Michele’s messy braid as seen at yesterday’s FEED USA and Target party in Brooklyn – such a fun hairstyle for medium to long hair!

Lea posted a close-up of her braid on Instagram, writing: “Loving my messy braid tonight by Sarah Potempa! #NYC”

Here’s how to get the look in 4 easy steps:

1. Use the Sarah Potempa Beachwaver to curl your hair.

2. After curling, apply a sea salt hair spray to add texture, volume and hold.

3. Pull your hair to one side and braid a normal braid. After you have secured your normal braid in place, tug on random sections of the braid, allowing them to look relaxed and messy. Continue tugging until you are satisfied with the look.

4. Finish the hairstyle with hairspray to hold it all in place.
