Revealed: 5 Japanese Skincare Secrets and Techniques

Ever wondered why Japanese women have flawless, youthful skin? This comes down to a balanced, healthy diet, but also meticulously taking care of skin at all ages. It also helps that Japanese skincare products are more concentrated, and made from natural ingredients such as seaweed, azuki beans, and even rice.

Here are a few of our top-secret Japanese skincare tips which could dramatically change the look and feel of your face.

RELATED: The Hidden Dangers of Natural Skincare

Cleansing

Warm-water cleansing is a necessity in Japanese skincare culture as it helps to restructure the skin, and remove any harmful toxins from the surface. Natural soaps are regularly used by both women and men to restore the skins p.H level, and help to retain moisture. Almost all cleansers are fragrance-free, since this is the number one trigger for irritable skin.

Insider tip: Try cleansing your face with lukewarm water (skin temperature), rather than hot water which enlarges the pores, and is a breeding ground for bacteria.

Toning

Rather than using the traditional liquid toner, Japanese skincare uses lotions which are quick-drying and available at any price range. Toners are generally used to soften the skin and are best applied over the t-zone, cheeks, and chin to better absorb moisturisers and serums. Japanese toners are also referred to as ‘lotion masks’ which are applied with a cotton pad, and left on the skin – kind of like a relaxing pamper session!

Exfoliating

Azuki powders are regularly used as skin exfoliators because they don’t harm the skin like mircobeads, and give a deep-clean in seconds. This ingredient has been used for centuries and is readily available in almost every Japanese skincare store. Combine with lukewarm water and massage softly over the face, neck, and decolletage for instant results. Azuki nourishes and cleanses without stripping the skin of its natural oils, and is gentle enough to use daily.

Moisturising

Skin treatments play a large role in Japanese skincare; they help to restore the skin without clogging pores or causing additional damage. Tsubaki or Japanese Camellia is a cold-pressed oil which is fast-absorbing and is packed with various skin-loving nutrients. Apply a few drops onto freshly cleansed and toned skin, then wait for it to try.

Insider tip: Oils and serums work better when warmed between your hands. The heat breaks down the barrier between your skin and the serum, so it is better absorbed.

SPF

While most women use sunscreen every day before heading out, Japanese women protect their skin in other ways. This is because most sunscreens (especially formulas 50+) are loaded with chemicals such as oxybenzone which can harm skin in many different ways. Make sure to do your research and invest in a sunscreen which can block UVB rays, without all the harmful chemicals such as retinyl palmitate.
