Get The Look – Kendall Jenner’s Glowing Skin

While everyone won’t stop talking about younger sister Kylie’s plump lips, it’s Kendall who really has the enviable glowing skin. Easily recreate this look with a few key products which are definitely our holy grail here at SHESAID.

Instructions

2. Once your moisturiser has completely set into the skin, use a light-diffusing primer to create Kendall’s glow. A pea-sized amount is just enough for your entire face, and you should focus the product into your cheeks, forehead and chin for best results.

3. Use a foundation which won’t give a ‘cakey’ look, but instead choose something that will work well with the primer. Dab the foundation on your forehead, cheeks and chin, then blend in with a stippling brush.

How To Take Your Makeup From Day To Night

Re-applying makeup is never anyone’s forte, especially after a long day at work or school. So instead, take your look from day to night with the following tips – they take about 5 minutes to create and won’t have you running late for that next appointment!

RELATED: How To Wear Coloured Eye Makeup

Bold lip

A vibrant, bold lip is the perfect makeup tip if you want to update your look for the evening. Why? It adds a pop of colour to the face and takes about 2 minutes to prepare. All you need is a lip liner, lipstick and a few cotton tips to prevent any smudging.

Cat-eye

The classic cat-eye flick is another great way to update your look without going over the top. Felt-liners are so quick and easy to use and fit discretely into your clutch or handbag. Start with a small flick, then extend it outwards by carefully pushing the side of the liner against your crease.

Cream eyeshadow

Rather than carrying around a huge compact in your handbag, use a cream eyeshadow pencil to easily update your eye makeup. All you need to do is smudge it over your eyes and blend it out with your fingers. For a lived-in look, use the colour in your waterline.

Setting powder

We all get oily throughout the day, so it’s important to use a setting powder to take away some of that extra shine. Focus the product on your t-zone, forehead and chin to create a matte base for your look.

Lip and cheek stain

If you’re working with a relatively minimal base, use a lip and cheek stain to bring some colour back into your face. Take the product onto your fingers, then dab it over your cheeks. It gives an instant glow without looking too artificial on the face.

8 Wedding Makeup Mistakes To Avoid

Are you planning to do your own makeup for your wedding? Bridal makeup should look natural and never too heavy – especially for those crucial wedding photos! So, to ensure you achieve a flawless base on your big day, here is a list of common makeup mistakes to avoid:

RELATED: 5 Stylish Bridesmaid Hair Ideas

1. DO: Prime

Always use a primer to create a flawless base for your makeup. This is crucial if you have dry or oily skin which is hard to manage at the best of times.

2. DON’T: Try something new

Your wedding day isn’t the best time to try a new product which might react badly to your skin. Stick to what you know and use products which will complement your skin type and texture.

3. DO: Book a trial

If you’re getting your makeup done by a professional, book in a trial a few weeks before your wedding. This is crucial since the makeup artist will try a few different looks on your skin, and also so you can determine which one is best for your wedding day.

4. DON’T: Contour

Self-contouring is never really a great option, especially if you don’t have the correct tools or techniques. If you are going to contour, use a light hand and carefully accentuate the cheekbones with a slightly dark, matte bronzer. Leave the concealing and highlighting to the professionals for this one.

5. DO: Wear lipgloss

Lipgloss is typically easier to maintain since it’s so quick and easy to apply – even without a mirror! Matte, shimmery, or even long-lasting lip colours can bleed on the lips and need to be re-applied with care every few hours.

6. DON’T: Wear SPF

Any type of foundation with SPF is going to create a white caste in your wedding photos – this is just a fact of life. To avoid this, use a blotting powder to decrease the shine, or simply take your wedding photos at the beginning of the day.

7. DO: Stay natural

A natural makeup look is a safe option since you know it will suit your skin tone. Anything too dramatic will look rather out of place in your wedding photos and might not match the look of the bridesmaids.

8. DON’T: Fake tan

While it might seem tempting, you should skip the fake tan on your wedding day. Not only can it stain your dress, but it isn’t a good combination for the warmer weather. If you do want a natural glow, use a body shimmer on your decolletage, arms and legs.

5 Makeup Trends That Need To Stop ASAP

Have you ever seen a makeup trend that you think needs to end? We’re counting down five of the most over-used trends which celebrities have tried, YouTube guru’s are overdoing, and those that should just never see the light of day.

RELATED: How New Beauty Trend Alert – Ombré Brows

Contouring

While contouring is wildly popular, it’s often quite difficult to get it right. We say you should leave that technique to the professional makeup artists who blend the colours seamlessly without resulting in a shade which is too dark (or too light for your natural skin tone).

5 Makeup Trends That Need To Stop ASAP

Kylie Jenner lips

The ‘big lip’ look had it’s moment, now lets never mention it again. Even Kylie Jenner herself admitted to injecting her lips, so isn’t it finally time to stop over-drawing our lips? Anyway, taking more than 1 hour to get ready is completely overrated.

5 Makeup Trends That Need To Stop ASAP

Bronzing

While we’re all guilty of this one, matching your foundation to your fake tan is never really a good option. Why? Most women actually forget to blend it into their neck, decolletage and even behind their ears!

This means that your makeup actually looks quite patch, and doesn’t look natural at all. Always get matched by a professional who can identify if your skin is warm or cool toned.

5 Makeup Trends That Need To Stop ASAP

False lashes

Now, we’re not talking about individual lashes or the natural kind which actually look quite nice! It’s time to retire those false lashes with diamonds, thick bands and colours which are too heavy for most of our eyelids. If you want the illusion of bigger lashes, use a few corner strips on the side of your eyes.

5 Makeup Trends That Need To Stop ASAP

Statement brows

Put down that pomade and embrace the natural look! While filling in our eyebrows has become second nature, this trend has clearly gone OTT over the last year. Some clear gel, an eyebrow pencil, and a brow brush is really the only thing you need to tame those brows on a daily basis.

Don’t forget to finish off with a nude lip before heading out the door.

5 Versatile Makeup Looks For Brides

Old Hollywood

Use colour to your advantage with a bright, matte lip for your wedding day. Since the lips are probably the main part of your makeup look, keep everything else muted down. A clean, fresh makeup base is a must-have so don’t forget to use a good primer to avoid an oily t-zone.

Although most brides prefer layers of makeup on their wedding day, go for something a little less high-maintenance to show off your natural beauty.

How To Achieve The ‘No-Makeup’ Look

The no-makeup look is one of the biggest beauty trends this season since it’s so quick and easy to achieve, especially if you don’t have time on your side. Regardless of your skin type, you will only need 5 essential products to transform your look for work, drinks, or even a first date.

RELATED: 5 Underrated Makeup Products

Foundation

A perfect base is a reflection of your skincare routine, so don’t ever miss out on cleansing, moisturising and exfoliating your skin on a daily basis. Before applying a foundation, use a moisturiser or primer to make it last the distance. This is an essential if your skin is dry, oily, or even combination, since it creates a barrier between your makeup and won’t clog your pores.

Screen shot 2015-04-30 at 10.41.14 AM

Rimmel Radiance BB Cream, $12.95

For a truly natural foundation look, use something with a light coverage. This could be anything from a powder foundation, BB cream, or even a tinted moisturiser. To apply, use a damp cosmetic sponge such as the Beauty Blender to carefully work the product into your skin. It may require a little more patience, but it will truly look like your skin, but better. If you just don’t have the time, apply it with your fingers – it will melt easily into the skin.

Screen shot 2015-04-30 at 11.00.09 AM

Beauty Blender Classic Sponge & Solid BlenderCleanser Kit, $42.20

Highlight

To give an extra bit of dimension to your face, a highlighter is a must-have. Powders, liquids and even balms are all great ways to give your face an extra glow for any occasion.

Dab it lightly over your cheekbone, above the cupids bow and on the brow bone to make your face glow instantly. Just remember that less is more and that it’s easier to build up your makeup rather than applying too much. Apply your makeup in natural light so you will know exactly what it looks like once you’ve left the house.

Screen shot 2015-04-30 at 10.43.46 AM

Josie Maran Argan Illuminiser, $35

Blush

A bit of blush on the cheeks can completely transform your entire look – trust us! If you’re worried about distributing too much product over your face, use a liquid formula instead. It’s easier to control and won’t leave your cheeks looking too flushed. Liquid or cream blushes melt into the skin and give a rosy appearance to your face without looking too artificial.

Screen shot 2015-04-30 at 10.45.36 AM

Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge, $44

Bronzer

There are a few different ways to make bronzer work for your skin tone, especially since it can create so much dimension in the face. Mix it into your foundation for a subtle hint of colour, use it to contour your cheekbones (just don’t forget to blend), or apply it all over for a sun-kissed glow.

If you’re worried about the bronzer looking a little too artificial, choose a formula which is matte rather than shimmery. This will only attract more light to your skin and will be a dead giveaway that the glow is in fact, fake.

Screen shot 2015-04-30 at 10.47.43 AM

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer, $30

Mascara

Finally, where would we be all be without mascara? It’s the best way to hide a late night, hangover, or even puffy eyes after an illness. Remember to curl your lashes and apply just a thin coat to emphasise your eyes. If your lashes are blonde, use a brown mascara instead of black, since it can look quite harsh on pale skin.

Orange

Who doesn’t love a bright orange lip? Pack away that matte red shade in favour of a shimmery orange lipstick instead. Orange actually suits all skin tones and doesn’t create the illusion of yellow teeth (unlike a blue-toned red lipstick).

Heat-Proof Bridal Makeup Tutorial

Allow your makeup to really last the distance on your wedding day by using trusted products which will keep skin looking fresh all day and night.

Rather than testing a new foundation or blush, book a makeup trial a few weeks ahead of your wedding, to see how the products interact with your skin, and if they last all day.

Below are some trusted products used by makeup artists to create a heat-proof makeup look for the modern bride.

RELATED: Bridal Makeup 101

Primer

Prep your face with a light, translucent primer which will create a smooth base for foundation. Apply onto cleansed skin, on places your skin would release a lot of oil during the day. Wait for it to set completely before applying eye creams, or foundation.

Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer, $69

Blemish concealer

Use a green concealer to cancel out any red undertones in the skin, and balance the colour of hyper pigmentation on the cheeks, chin, and forehead. Dab with your fingers or a flat concealer brush for best results.

Screen shot 2014-12-22 at 4.11.04 PM

NYX Cosmetics Concealer Jar, $5

Foundation

It is important to use a foundation which is suited to your skin tone (whether that is oily, combination, acne-prone, or dry), and colour-matched to the rest of your body. If you’re planning to fake tan on your wedding day, make sure your foundation matches the colour of your neck!

Choose formulas which melt seamlessly into the skin, and don’t require too much touching up throughout the day.

Screen shot 2014-12-22 at 4.07.21 PM

Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation, $42

Under-eye concealer

Once your foundation has set, use a lighter concealer to cover any bags or veins around the eyes. A cream formula is the easiest to use since it melts into the skin, and feels like you’re wearing nothing at all.

Screen shot 2014-12-22 at 4.04.08 PM

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, $49

Eyeshadow

If your eyelids are on the oily side, use a cream shadow stick which will keep your makeup in place. Apply a base shade all over the lid, and dab some powder over the top (make sure it’s free of SPF since this can make your eyes look shiny, and breakdown the makeup).

Screen shot 2014-12-22 at 4.17.14 PM

By Terry Ombre Blackstar Cream Eyeshadow, $56

Mascara

Use a water-resistant mascara which won’t transfer on your lids, and is designed to stay on for hours on end. Apply from root to tip, and wiggle the mascara from side to side for best results.

Screen shot 2014-12-22 at 4.20.01 PM

Eyeko Black Magic Mascara, $34

Blush

A lightweight, liquid blush is the best formula for maintaining your makeup since it is packed with jojoba and essential oils to nourish the skin. Apply a small pea-sized amount on the apples of your cheeks, and blend well with a stippling brush.

Coming up with makeup for glasses can often prove to be difficult – since glasses already draw so much attention to the eyes already! Whether you want to create a natural look for the daytime, or a dramatic evening look for a night out, below are some ideas which will complement your glasses – whatever shape they may be!

Natural pink

This look is perfect if you want to create an artificial glow, with a splash of colour on the cheeks, eyes and lips.

  1. Create a soft, matte base using liquid foundation a sturdy stippling brush. Then apply powder onto the t-zone, or any area of the face which is oily.
  2. Curl your lashes, and apply a glittery shade using a fat makeup brush onto the entire lid.
  3. Tight-line the eye using an angled eye brush and black gel liner. Don’t extend the flick too much, as this look is fairly casual.
  4. Apply a thin coat of mascara on your lashes, taking care to avoid any clumps.
  5. Now apply a tiny amount of blush on the apples of your cheeks, and a cute pink gloss on your lips.

Bronzed cat eye

A versatile look which can be worn out to dinner, drinks and everything in between. The cat-eye should be subtle and not extended too far, since it might be covered by the glasses.

  1. Apply an eyelid primer on your eyes if you’re prone to oily lids, or to make your eyeshadow last all day long. Then apply a dark shade over the outer corner and blend out well.
  2. Use a fat eyeshadow brush and apply a lighter colour over rest of the lid. Then, take a blending brush and smooth out all the lines into the crease.
  3. Draw a tiny cat-eye extending from the outer corner of the eye, then curl lashes and apply mascara as usual.
  4. Fill in your brows, and apply a highlighting shade over the brow bone to give some definition.

Tips

  • Avoid using bright colours on your lids. The reason is that the glasses might actually block view of your eyelids throughout the day/night. Save the bright colours for your cheeks or lips. A lip gloss is a great alternative and is quick and easy to apply.
  • Don’t be scared to use false lashes. They will make your eyes pop and extend your lashes to almost twice their original size. Use a fibre lash mascara if the thought of falsies still makes you uneasy.

Get the Look: Charlotte Ronson Makeup at NYFW

How pretty is the makeup look at the Charlotte Ronson A/W 2014 show at NYFW? Makeup artist Yadim created the natural, glowing look with just-bitten lips, saying the inspiration is “a cool downtown girl. An ode to romance.”

Skin
To prep the skin, Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels were placed under the models’ eyes. Then the skin was moisturised using Arctic Elixir, and Arctic Face Mist to set the makeup.

“I used Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadow in Barely Branded as a highlighter on the inner corner on eyes, on the nose, cheekbones, chin and cupid’s bow,” said Yadim.

Cheeks and lips
“I used a bit of Berry Lipstick for the cheeks and Red Revival on the lip. I pressed it with my fingers for a wine stained look. It’s not super perfect — it’s ok to smear and wear away. It’s a whisper of a lip. No mascara, no liner.”

Get the Look: Katy Perry’s Glam Retro Makeup

Katy Perry rocked the perfect retro makeup look at the American Music Awards 2013, pairing her gorgeous rock-prom Oscar de la Renta gown with classic red lips and va-va-voom lashes. Here’s how celebrity makeup artist Jake Bailey created the look using COVERGIRL.

Skin
Jake started with a sheer application of COVERGIRL Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation in Buff Beige #825. “This foundation is perfect for the red carpet because it provides full coverage but can be blended sheerly for light yet durable coverage,” said Jake. “It lasts forever and the 20 SPF is great for a daytime red carpet event because they have to stand in the sun for so long!”

To set the foundation, he finished with a light dusting of COVERGIRL + Olay Pressed Powder in Light #330.

For Katy’s rosy, radiant blush, Jake applied Clean Glow Blush in Roses #100 on the apples of her cheeks.

Eyes
Jake created a classic Hollywood eye line using COVERGIRL Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Black Fire #410. He then deepened the crease of her lid using Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Melted Caramel #330.

For Katy’s seriously black lashes, Jake finished with Bombshell Volume Mascara in Very Black #800.

Lips
For Katy’s classic red lip, Jake used COVERGIRL LipPerfection in Hot #305 with matching liner, using the liner to create the perfect lip shape before filling in with lipstick.
