Throwback Thursday: Golden Globes 2004

January 27, 2004

Everyone knows that award shows aren’t just about the winners. Self-respecting, hard-working fashion victims around the globe sit glued to awards shows for hours, critiquing the outfits, the accessories, the boyfriends, the make up and the speeches. Come on, fess up. You do it, we all do it. Now, let’s compare notes…

Former royalty A-lister, Sarah Ferguson quite frankly should have stayed home! Her Cleopatra eye makeup was more Mardi Gras than Golden Globe… Someone who has all the right moves, however, is South African farm girl turned superstar Charlize Theron who made a fabulous entrance in Christian Dior. Gorgeous, charming and a winner through and through, taking home the best Actress award.

Blondes have more fun? Not so for Sarah Jessica Parker and that haute coute dress made especially for her by Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel looked stunning! Also looking like a million bucks was Jennifer Aniston, minus her most famous handbag, hubby Brad Pitt. Mrs Pitt also presented an award on the night, and it looked like she came dangerously close to popping out of her sexy dress with its super plunging neckline!

One of the spunkiest men on earth, Johnny Depp looked positively sexy in his old-style gangster get up, accompanied by his stunning wifey Vanessa Paradis. Sex in the City veteran Kim Cattrell looked just peachy with an up hair do, and a silky frock, that was ten times as classy as her alter ego Samantha has even been. Vintage Valentino will do that to a girl, darling.

Will and Grace star Debra Messing was positively glowing in a fab frock with loads of cleavage! Not a hint of frumpy maternity wear here! And that other fabulous-when-pregnant star Catherine Zeta Jones, self-appointed princess of Hollywood, rubbed everyone’s noses in it – talk about smug married! Queer Eye fav Carson got into the spring of things, sporting a pink jacket – how appropriate. Notably absent from the red carpet was another fiery raven-haired beauty, Penelope Cruz.

Current beau Tom Cruise was nominated for best actor, the award being presented by ex-wife Nicole Kidman. Now, that could have been one awkward moment. But luckily, for our Nic, neither Tom, nor good friends Russell Crowe and Jude Law took the title. Nic was a fashion star on the night with a stunning frock featuring a gold sequin bodice, plunging neckline and romantic flowing, chiffon skirt, courtesy of Yves Saint Laurent. Critics the world over have been commenting on our Nic’s style on this night of nights. To us, she can never put a foot wrong.

Throwback Thursday: Nicole Kidman Uses Botox

Each Thursday, we’ll dust of the SHESAID archives to bring you a story of years past. Everyone loves a walk down memory lane, right? So why not do it every week…
She’s denied it for years but most of us didn’t buy it: Nicole Kidman has finally admitted to using Botox, but says that’s all in the past. The 43 year-old actress with the porcelain complexion says she no longer has Botox injections because she doesn’t like the results.

“I’ve tried a lot of things but apart from working out and a good diet most things don’t help,” she told a German magazine when asked how she keeps her skin looking so good.

“I even tried Botox but I didn’t like how my face looked afterwards. Now I don’t use it anymore – and I can move my forehead again.”

The photo above is from a recent premiere of her latest movie Rabbit Hole. Her forehead and undereye area do look very smooth – could she be telling the truth?

She has famously denied using Botox to keep her skin line-free, saying her anti-ageing secrets are to stay out of the sun and not smoke. She previously stated: “I am completely natural. I have nothing in my face or anything.” But in 2008 one cosmetic surgeon said she was so “over-Boxoted” she gives female celebrities a bad name.

What do you think? Does it look like Nicole Kidman is still using Botox?

The Science Of Self-Esteem

Nicole Kidman announced in an interview she has finally embraced her curls. Frankly, Nicole didn’t need to tell us she didn’t like her natural hair – we can see the way she flat irons it so much, her hairline is receding. She has cosmetically altered her lips, her cheeks and her breasts. It is alarming to us when women, who have made millions of dollars out of their beauty, hope to look more beautiful. We assume they have infinite confidence. Self-esteem starts to look like the Yowie – everybody knows it exists but nobody has ever seen it. So how do we get self-esteem? And, more importantly, how do we lose it?

In times of doubt, people often reach for self-help books in search of encouragement and the use of self-affirmations. These books sell the idea you can raise your self-esteem by repeating a certain phrase, like a mantra. “I am loveable. I am attractive. I am healthy.” According to a recent study in Psychological Science, these statements actually have the opposite effect. People with low self-esteem feel worse after repeating them.

The problem is, if we don’t believe it, our brains work twice as hard rejecting the statement. You may say, “I am loveable” but if you don’t believe you are, the brain replies, “No, you’re not. If you’re so loveable, why are you lying in bed repeating this lame mantra. If you were loveable, you wouldn’t be alone in bed!” For every positive statement we don’t believe, the brain launches a counter-attack.

You can’t trick the brain into believing the opposite, but you can reason with it and come to a happy compromise. When these statements of positivity are tailored to the individual and the quality is something the individual values, the phrases can be repeated to good effect. For example, if I were to compliment myself on my wonderful driving, I wouldn’t feel any better about myself, because I don’t care about driving well. I just want to arrive somewhere uninjured. If I compliment myself on how wonderful I am at writing, I will feel the warm fuzz of an ego boost because I care about writing well and my mind will entertain the possibility that it is true.

Another important discovery about self-esteem is that most of it is based on what the culture values. We see fluctuations in young women’s self-esteem when they look at women in magazines. Overweight women’s self-esteem plummets when they view photographic models of any size and underweight women’s esteem increases, regardless of the models’ size.  A slender body type is what the culture values at the moment and so overweight women will never feel good about themselves no matter what size the woman. Thin women just walk around feeling smug, regardless of the magazines. Researchers discovered that what is culturally valued overrides our own personal values.

So the brain is judging those qualities we are actually good at and if that quality is actually valued in society, you find the sweet spot of an affirmation that will actually work. “I am loveable” just isn’t going to cut it. “I am really kind to my family.” “I am a great communicator.” “I have a great sense of style.” Find something you do well and pay attention to it. Appreciate that it is both true for you and objectively true. Then put that phrase on high-rotation but try to keep it on the inside.

Try it, it’s science.

Nicole Kidman Dishes on Her Romantic Marriage

Nicole Kidman may be the epitome of Hollywood glamour, but she’s the first to admit she’s “very country at heart.”

The 46-year-old Oscar winner has been gushing about life in Nashville with her hubbie Keith Urban, also 46, and daughters Sunday Rose, 5, and Faith, 3.

“I have a real desire to be outdoors, a desire for simplicity- a slightly slower, relaxed approach to life. A community, not a big-city feel. That’s what I grew up with, and it’s what I prefer.’

Despite Urban’s busy schedule filming American Idol, Kidman revealed his romantic side.

“For every single night he’s away, he leaves me a love letter. Every single night of our relationship. It keeps us close.” Awww…

She admits she loves the country lifestyle so much, they even indulge in Wendy’s – an American burger chain – together.

“Keith and I eat at Wendy’s,” she confessed. “You’ve got to remember, I’m with a musician on a tour bus. We do drive throughs!”

And if you’ve been wondering about Kidman’s famous curls, which she’s mostly been straightening for the last 20 years, expect to see a lot more of her original hair.

“I almost never straighten it anymore,” she says. “It’s taken me 40-something years, but I embrace the curl. My littlest daughter has the same hair. She likes it when my hair is curly, so I wear it for her.”

Nicole Kidman: Tom and I “Lived in a Romantic Bubble”

Nicole Kidman has opened up about her marriage to Tom Cruise, describing their intense relationship as “deeply romantic.”

Kidman, 46, revealed that being an A-list celebrity caused her and Cruise, 51, to feel like they were living in a “bubble.”

“There is something about that sort of existence that, if you really focus on each other and you’re in that bubble, it’s very intoxicating, because it’s just the two of you,” she tells Vanity Fair’s December issue.

“And there is only one other person that’s going through it. So it brings you very close, and it’s deeply romantic.”

The Oscar-winning actress admits that not many people can understand the intensity of their 10-year marriage.

“I’m sure Brad and Angelina have that, because there’s nobody else that understands it except that person who’s sleeping right next to you.”

The Aussie actress was quick to point out that she’s much happier now with husband Keith Urban, 46. The couple have been married since 2006.

“With no disrespect to what I had with Tom, I’ve met my great love now. I didn’t want to jump from one relationship to another … I was a child, really, when I got married. And I needed to grow up,” she admits, alluding to the fact she married the Hollywood star when she was only 23.

Kidman might be busier than ever – she’ll next be seen on the big screen as Princess Grace of Monaco – but she loves living in Nashville with Urban and their two daughters, Sunday, five, and Faith, two, as she says, “because I can kind of have a very odd, idiosyncratic kind of path.”

Keith Urban: Nicole and I Enjoy “Sex Texting”

Keith Urban has come out and said it: he and wife Nicole Kidman enjoy what most of us do – sexting, or “sex texting.”

In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, the country music star and American Idol judge was asked how he and his wife of seven years keep the romance alive.

“We just make it work,” said Urban, 45. “We never text, we never email. Phone calls only, which I really love that.”

Kidman, 46, is currently in London shooting a movie, while Urban is touring the States and busy with Idol commitments. Their two children – Sunday, five, and Faith, two – are staying in London with Kidman.

But pressed by DeGeneres about how they stay in touch, Urban admitted that they actually do send text messages.

“Maybe one text. Maybe one cool kind of, you know…yes, one of those ones with the accompanying photo. One of those kind of texts.”

And typically, the talk show host would not leave him alone. “What kind of text? What do you mean?” DeGeneres joked.

“Nice sex texting,” he admitted. “I’m a little red right now!”

Get The Look: Nicole Kidman’s Golden Globes Hair

Celebrity hair stylist David Babaii created this stunning look for Nicole Kidman at the Golden Globes. Here’s how David recreated this A-list hairstyle in 4 easy steps.

The inspiration

“The style inspiration for Nicole look was my take on a modern day Veronica Lake,” said Babaii.

Get the look

1. David began with a nourishing shampoo and conditioner to maintain Nicole’s hair colour balance while also hydrating.

Try: David Babaii for WildAid ColourMaxx Shampoo and Conditioner.

2. Next, he applied a small amount of silicone-free Miracle Oil Hair Exilir by Davi Babaii to add additional shine, and protect the hair from thermal damage.

3. Then he used a small round brush bumping the end under. For the Veronica Lake look, David used a large barrel curling iron, wrapping only the bottom portion of the section around the barrel to create soft natural waves.

4. To finish, he created a side part and lifted the root area with a volumising spray, lightly spritzing the end for a long-lasting hold.

Try: David Babaii for WildAid Volanic Ash Root Amplifier.

Tom and Penelope call it quits

Tom and Penelope call it quits

All over red rover
Actors Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz have decided to call their three-year relationship quits, according to reports from the States. The two met in 2001 on the set of Vanilla Sky, shortly after the breakup of Cruise?s marriage to Nicole Kidman. Cruise’s sister and publicist, Lee-Anne Devette, reportedly said that the couple broke up in January, and had managed to keep the news of their split quiet until now. She said the break-up was “amicable”. Robert Garlock, spokesperson for Cruz, 29, told People magazine the two “remain good friends”. He reportedly added that the split was not a result of Cruise’s religious affiliations, and confirmed that Cruz had not converted to Scientology. Sources revealed that neither actor is involved with anyone else at present. No doubt the romantics of the world are already hoping for a Cruise/Kidman re-union on the horizon? Don?t hold your breath!

The original Samantha – Elizabeth Montgomery
Ah MacLaine, you’ve done it again
If you loved the hit TV series Bewitched then you will be happy to hear that not only has Nicole Kidman signed on to star as Samantha Stevens in the forthcoming big screen version. But that?s not all. Veteran actors Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine reportedly “look set” to play Samantha Stevens’ parents in the feature film, according toVariety magazine. And further casting news has funnyman Will Ferrell as Samantha?s hapless human, husband, Darren, aka Derwood. When will it hit our screens? That’s what we’d like to know?

Jen isn’t giving anything away on this one.
Jennifer Garner single again
Is Jennifer Garner headed for the single bars again? Last year she split with hubby Scott Foley, whose career just happened to be taking a downturn at the time, then weeks later she revealed that her new lover was none other than Aliasco-star Michael Vartan. The couple was pleased when their relationship become public knowledge, as it meant they didn’t have to hide it any more. Jennifer said at the time: “Of course Michael and I are dating, it’s so new and exciting.” Apparently love in the public eye is a little too much for the the star, as now reports that the two have broken up due to the pressure of celebrity. One friend revealed: “Jennifer has been telling people she and Michael broke up.” But according the New York Post a spokeswoman for Jennifer has denied the couple have broken up. Guess we have to wait to see who is telling the truth on this one!

The blushing bride
Aguilera secretly engaged to marry
Christina Aguilera, 22, looks set to follow in girl-pal Britney Spears? footsteps and run off to Las Vegas for a quickie in the Chapel of Love. But who is the mystery man that has captured Aguilera?s heart? The young miss has been dating 27-year-old, Jordan Bratman, who works for her management company, for seven months. Now it seems the couple has decided to tie the knot although their marital plans were meant to be a secret. Jordan?s granny let it slip to reporters on Tuesday. “Jordan asked her in Los Angeles,” said 72-year-old Sally Bratman. “He called me and told me two days ago. I’m very happy they are engaged. His mum and dad are very happy too. I don’t know when the wedding will be – soon, hopefully.” Aguilera is already sporting an engagement ring, she said. “They have a ring and she’s worn it. I think it has a diamond in it, but I haven’t seen it myself.”

Oscars Fashion Round up

Oscars fashion round up

And the winner is… Charlize
Classy dresses in soft shades adorned with lavish beadwork were the winners at this year’s Academy Awards. From subtle peach and pale lemon to beautifully rich creams, the Oscars frocks were for the most part, tasteful and classic. Looking gorgeous in Tom Ford for Gucci, was best actress winner Charlize Theron. Topping off what is surely one of the best years in this young actress’s life, statuesque South African-born star was awarded the industry’s highest accolade for her portrayal as a serial killer in the film Monster.

Uma Thurman – maybe her shoes are really nice?
Pale and interesting
Nicole Kidman looked divine in a pale green Chanel gown, and best supporting actress winner Renee Zellweger looked sleek in a simple white Carolina Herrera strapless frock. And while pastel shades and simple designs worked for some, one Hollywood dame didn’t quite pull the look off, looking pale and uninteresting in an unflattering ruffled, doily number. Uma Thurman – my Nan wants her toilet roll cover back! Rumour has it, she at least had the good sense to change into something else before attending the post-awards parties.

Naomi and Heath – a nuptial dress rehearsal?
Retro glamour
The fashion of the night seemed to hark back to Hollywood’s Golden Age, with lots of classic Jean Harlow-eqsue 1930’s style hair-dos, soft curls and figure-hugging gowns. Best actress nominee Naomi Watts was no match for Charlize in the awards stakes, but looked every inch the winner in a flesh-toned Versace number covered in hundreds of sparkly crystals. Some stars bucked the trend for pretty pastels, including a youthful looking Catherine Zeta Jones opting for vibrant scarlet vintage Versace, to show off her fab post-baby bod.

Jude Law and Sienna
And the men?
Johnny Depp was particularly charming to 13-year-old best supporting actress Keisha Castle-Hughes, even giving the star struck teen a kiss for good luck! But what was the story with his terrible hair? Wispy fringe and middle part – urgh! Jude Law looked ravishing, as usual and former best actor winner Adrien Brody looked smart in an Ermenegildo Zegna all black, slim fitting suit. Showing impeccable grooming, Adrien also freshened up with a quick burst of breath freshening spray after announcing Charlize Theron winner of best actress award. Who could forget his sensational acceptance pash with presenter Halle Berry at last year’s awards? What a charmer!

Beyonce – Tommy’s new girl

Beyonce – Tommy’s new girl

Singer/actor Beyonce has now become a Tommy Girl, signing a contract worth almost $10 million Australian dollars to be the face of designer Tommy Hilfiger’s new fragrance. The Destiny’s Child frontwoman’s multi-year deal includes starring in both TV and magazine adverts for the as-yet-unnamed women’s perfume, which will be unveiled later this year. “Beyonce has beauty, style, intelligence and such a warm personality,” said Hilfiger as the news was announced. “She is the perfect person for this project.” The American designer already has a number of scents on the market, including Tommy, Tommy Girl, Tommy Summer and T For Him. Meanwhile, Beyonce’s career both in and out of the music studio seems to be going from strength to strength. She’s been nominated for six Grammys this year, and performed at the Superbowl in the US last weekend. She’s also currently starring in gladiator-style Pepsi commercials alongside fellow pop divas Pink and Britney Spears. You go girl!

Britney, Beyonce & Pink team up for Pepsi??
Pepsi has pulled off one of the biggest coups in advertising history – securing the services of Britney Spears, Beyonce and Pink for a super, celebrity-packed TV commercial of epic proportions. The chicks play out a mock Gladiator battle to a reworked version of the old Queen hit We Will Rock You for the new commerical, which also stars fellow popstar Enrique Iglesias as an evil Roman emperor. Former Queen bands members, Brian May and Roger Taylor, and the cast of the commerical attended the launch at the National Gallery in London’s Trafalgar Square last week. “To have this premiere is pretty amazing,” said Spears, “Filming the ad was awesome, it made me feel empowered and I got to work with these two fantastic gladiator women,” she added.

Pay-per-view for Paris?
Paris Hilton‘s ex, home Rick Salomon offered to drop his US$10 million dollar law suit against her family but in true Hollywood style there is a catch – Salomon will only drop the lawsuit in exchange for the distribution rights to the video. A supreme opportunist, Salomon, aka Mr Shannon Doherty, seems to have identified a hole in the porn market, and now seeks to sell the saucy tape pay-per-view. Heather McCloskey, lawyer for the multi-million dollar heiress and her family branded the move “beneath contempt.” All we can say is – Nice try Rick!

Kidman bound for UN
Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn are heading for the UN headquarters in New York – well in a movie anyway. The Interpreter which starts production in March, has our Nic playing an interpreter who overhears a deadly plot! In an unprecedented move the United Nations has granted rare permission for parts of the movie to be filmed at its headquarters in New York. Apparently the UN has received tonnes of requests to film in the prestigious building over the years, but so far no one has filmed inside the building before. The movie will be directed by Sydney Pollack whose previous films include Out of Africa and Tootsie. A UN spokeswoman said Secretary General Kofi Annan and his advisors decided it was in the organisation’s interest to bring its work to the attention of cinema viewers around the world. She added that she did not know if Mr Annan or any other UN staff would feature in the film, saying a number of practical arrangements still needed to be worked out.

Still no confirmations the rumours of Nicole’s alleged engagement to rocker Lenny Kravitz. Watch this space as rumours has it Nicole will make a pre-Christmas announcement about this hot relationship! Perhaps the funky musician will set foot on Sydney soil this summer, when Nicole joins her family for Christmas down under?

Shakira shakes it for the kids

Pop diva Shakira wants to shake booty for a good cause – she’s the latest celebrity to be appointed by the United Nations as a goodwill ambassador. Instead of pushing soft drinks like some of her colleagues, this Colombian songbird will be pushing for better lives for children. “UNICEF has done tremendous work in my home nation,” Shakira said in a statement Friday. “I have seen firsthand the difference UNICEF makes.” UNICEF executive director Carol Bellamy revealed that Shakira had been selected because of “her compassion, her involvement in global issues, her deep commitment to helping children, and her appeal to young people around the world.”

Celebrities doing it for UNICEF

Shakira, the youngest person and first Columbian to be appointed a goodwill ambassador, follows in the footsteps of fellow celebrities Geri Halliwell and Angelina Jolie. “It’s rewarding to know that I join such a great list of stars supporting UNICEF, and can personally contribute to improving the lives and futures of children.” In her role as ambassador, Shakira will use her high profile around the world to spread the word about UNICEF programmes and visit developing countries to witness the plight of the children she is aiming to help. Great to see celebs using their powers for the good of others and not just for their own material wealth!

Affleck flick gets the flick

Poor old Bennifer! It seems like his wedding is not the only thing being cancelled at the last minute! The Walt Disney Company announced last week that it will not be going ahead with it’s matrimonial comedy flick Ghosts of Girlfriends Past just four weeks before it was due to begins production. The movie was to star Ben Affleck as a bachelor who attends his brother’s wedding and is visited by the ghosts of his past girlfriends. Even though Disney declined to comment on why they had axed the movie, The Hollywood Reporter suggested that the film’s extremely high budget combined with Affleck’s slightly tarnished image were possible contributing factors. Wonder if Jenny from the Block and Gwyneth were pencilled in for cameos?

Are Uma and Ethan over?

Are Uma and Ethan over?

Despite rumours that divorce is imminent for glamour couple Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, Hawke?s spokesperson is still denying that the star hooked up with a younger beauty. However, a report in The National Enquirer has alleged that Ethan’s had a relationship with 22-year-old Canadian model Jen Perzow. This follows rumours that Hawke locked lips with Tomb Raider star, Angelina Jolie whilst on location filming Taking Lives in Canada. As recently as last month, Hawke?s spokesman Robert Garlock denied all reports of a separation, claiming, “They’ve been spending every weekend together, so the idea of another woman sounds ridiculous to me.” But US tabloids have been rampant with reports of a split, The Star, paper claiming Thurman already knows about her hubby’s extramarital activities with the young model – and it’s over. One source told the paper, “When Uma first got wind of Ethan’s cheating, they talked and she decided that maybe a one-night fling could be just a mistake and they could work through it. But when people told her that he was having an affair and was with the same girl more than once, it appeared as if it was instantly over in her mind. It seemed like there was no talking, no forgiving, no third chances.”

More Kidman wedding rumours?

It seems that the most recent potential beau for Nicole Kidman, is none other than dreadlocked US rocker Lenny Kravitz. Recent reports from New York newspapers suggest Our Nic and Kravitz have become secretly engaged, after he recently joined her while she was on the set of her new movie The Stepford Wives. But are they really an item? Or could it be that the pair are ?just good friends? and that she has been sharing his NYC apartment out of convenience, while her multimillion-dollar apartment is built near by.

The New York Daily News reported this weekend the two were “mighty cuddly” on recent outings together. The US paper cited sources close to Kravitz, some blabber-mouthed friend who refused to named, of course, stating the pair wanted to get hitched. However, Nic?s US agent has denied that there is any truth to the hush-hush engagement rumours and any plans for a future wedding.

Are Posh and Becks heading for splitsville?

Victoria and David Beckham have issued a joint statement denying reports their marriage is in trouble since his move to Spain football team Real Madrid. The couple?s statement, issued in a bid to put an end to rumours that life in Spain was putting pressure on their relationship, insisted they were “extremely happy together”. “Contrary to newspaper reports our marriage is not in crisis,” they said in the statement released through their management team. “We are extremely happy together as a family. Our only difficulty has been finding a house in Madrid that meets our needs. Since we first met, our careers have always meant we have spent time apart.? Becks went on to assure his fans that his wife?s absence has been due to her musical commitments in the UK, not due to any strife at home. “This is not a reflection on the strength of our marriage and we are very much enjoying our new life in Spain.” Becks still hoping that eventually Spain will become a permanent home to his superstar wife and two boys.

Muso Robert Palmer dies

Musician Robert Palmer died of a heart attack in Paris late last week aged 54. The British star was huge in the 80?s, famous for his hits Addicted to Love, Some Guys Have All the Luck and Didn’t Mean to Turn You On. He had been on a much-needed break with partner Mary Ambrose, after a busy time recording TV appearances in the UK. His manager said he suffered the heart attack in the early hours of Friday morning. He will be fondly remember for his ground breaking video Addicted to Love where he featured a band of identically dressed, identically made-up women. Rock journalist Paul Lester, from Uncut magazine, said Palmer career went from playing clubs in the north of the country, to becoming “elegant and sophisticated” and a master of several styles. “He was kind of a pioneer of blue-eyed soul, which is white men doing black music and R&B pretty well.”

Kidman the style icon

Kidman the style icon

We always thought it but now we know it?s true!! Nicole Kidman has been declared an icon of elegance and style by the world’s leading fashion photographers. The Australian Oscar winner will be given centre stage in a 20-page fashion spread featuring the world’s best known photographers in the coming issue of Vogue.

Vogue, one of the world?s leading fashion magazines has compared Kidman with Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts, but declared Kidman the hands down winner! According to the fashion police at Vogue Kidman has mastered dressing with authority and grandeur. In the most important issue of the year (according to those in the know), the September issue will be chockers with snaps of Ms Kidman described by the influential mag as “an icon of glamour and a certain fabulous appropriateness”.

Some the world?s leading photographers like Annie Leibovitz, Helmut Newton and Irving Penn will shoot ?our Nic? in the 20 page fashion spread in everything from Versace party frocks to sexy Agent Provocateur lingerie. According to fashion guru Tom Ford of Gucci, Kidman can?t put a Manolo Blahnik wrong! “She never makes a fashion faux pas. She’s developed a character for the red carpet, a public persona that is very groomed, very sleek, very controlled, very smooth, very much the star, very gracious, very elegant, very thoroughbred.” A lot of verys from the king of style himself!

Mirror Mirror on the wall – who is the coolest of them all?

Kylie has it and so does the David Beckham and his posh wife Victoria but who else makes the cool school according to a list compiled by the Brand Council of the UK? Sexy Soccer sensation David Beckham has been voted this years coolest celebrity with ex-boy band funkster Justin Timberlake taking out second. Followed then by the coolest chicks of them all, Victoria Beckham who came in at third place and Aussie songbird Kylie Minogue took out fourth place. At the other end of the age scale, even the Queen and Sean Connery apparently also possess it. According to the Brand Council, cool is not something you can manufacture, while they do state that there is no strict definition, being cool has something to do with being innovative, irreverent and confident enough to do your own thing. How cool are they?

Kidman wins libel case

Kidman wins libel case

Nicole Kidman has won an apology from London?s The Daily Mail after the newspaper ran a story suggesting that Kidman was being dishonest about her relationship with fellow actor, and Cold Mountain co-star, Jude Law. She was also awarded “substantial” undisclosed damages, successfully suing over the newspaper?s statement that she had tempted Law into an adulterous affair that resulted in the (very public) breakdown of his marriage.

“The publication of this article has caused grave damage to the claimant’s personal and professional reputation and she has suffered considerable embarrassment and distress,” solicitor Gideon Benaim told Mr Justice Gray, in the London High Court. “Her embarrassment was particularly acute as the allegations coincided with the run-up the Oscars award ceremony in Los Angeles in which she had been nominated for an award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in The Hours.” In a triumph of truth over evil, editor of The Daily Mail, Paul Dacre, and journalist Nicole Lampert apologised for the distress and embarrassment caused to Kidman and agreed to pay her legal costs as well as damages. The libelous pair also agreed that the allegations were completely untrue and totally without foundation. Looks like they picked the wrong Aussie chick to brand an adulteress this time!

Double agent seeking double pay?

Arse-kicking double agent Jennifer Garner looks set to get a massive pay rise according to the Hollywood Reporter. Apparently the rising star is close to signing a new contract extension that will keep her on the spy drama Alias through the 2007-2008 season and increase her salary from approximately $80,000 an episode to a cool $300,000 an episode. Great work if you can get it!

Ben and Jen’s film sucks say critics

Ben and Jen?s new flick Gigli is being panned ferociously by critics in the US, the movie has even been compared to Madonna’s last cinematic washout, 2002’s Swept Away, which had the unenviable title of the worst film for 2002. Halle Berry is surely thanking her lucky stars that she dropped out of the mobster romance/drama just before production began in late 2001. Miss Jennifer Lopez was quick to step up as leading-lady opposite her beau Ben Affleck. They say the rest is history but some critics are making sure Gigli goes down in history as one of the worst films of 2003!

Gigli – ?unwatchable?“Nearly as unwatchable as [its title] is unpronounceable.” Los Angeles Times

“Hopelessly misconceived exercise in celebrity self-worship.” New York Times

“The rare movie that never seems to take off, but also never seems to end.” USA Today

Oh dear.

J.Lo and Ben ? never again

There is some good news for the Ben/Jen show. At least one major critic in the US, The Chicago Sun-Times?, Roger Ebert calls the movie “different, thoughtful and a little daring.” He also stands up for the couple’s ability to couple on screen, not an easy task since Lopez’s character in this flick is, wait for it, a lesbian. Meanwhile in India, the Hindustan Times reveals that the real-life lovebirds, Lopez and Affleck, have vowed to never, ever make a movie together again. And by the sounds of it, it?s probably for the best.
