Is there a mum out there that never wishes for more hours in the day? Kids have an almost supernatural ability to demand every minute of our time and while it’s time we love to give (well, sometimes), it’s easy to start feeling overwhelmed. Here are some tips to help you overcome the chaos and retain your sanity.
Do housework with the kids
Yes, it’s quicker to do it when everyone’s in bed, but you’re missing out on pressures minutes you could spend relaxing, playing with your passion project or simply catching up on some sleep. Housework with the kids can turn into fun bonding moments. Not only you get everything done before bedtime, but kids see that chores don’t just automatically get completed on their own and learn how to do things. Soon enough the kids will take some of the tasks off you!
Shopping with the kids can drag on and suck your energy, but you don’t want to spend your precious kids-free time on mundane tasks either. Choose to shop online instead – most major supermarket offer online shopping. While it can be frustrating setting it up and finding your way around the websites, once you get the hang of it it makes your life a lot easier.
Pre-plan your meals
It can take time figuring out what you’re cooking every day and whether you have what you need. More often than not, there’ll be at least one item you’re missing and then you need to dash out to the shop to get it. It may only seem like 5 minutes here and half an hour there, but it all adds up. Instead of going though it daily, plan your meals for at least 3-4 days in advance, order everything you need online and you’re set!
Skip the ironing
When you’re shopping for clothes, make it one of your criteria to buy wrinkle-free. Even if it seems like a steep investment, imagine all the time you’ll save when ironing comes off your to-do list.
There are lots of demands on our time competing for our attention and you don’t need to do everything. You can’t possibly volunteer for every school event, attend every meeting and sign your kids up for every activity. Decide what’s important to you and learn to say ‘no’ to requests that don’t fit with your priorities and make you feel stressed.
Easier said than done, but it works! Choose to believe that you have enough time for everything you want to do and focus on the task at hand instead of using up your energy to worry about the next 100 tasks on your list. You’ll notice that everything will get done quicker and you’ll feel less tired!
