iPhone Apps For Travellers

Technology has changed the way we travel. It’s made travel easier, but also more complicated – we now have so many options that often we don’t even know where to start. Not sure how to make technology work for you? Check out this list of my favourite iPhone apps for travelers.

Packing Pro

Love to travel, but hate packing? Packing Pro makes your job a lot easier with a pre-designed packing list and suggestions on what to bring based on your personal needs, trip duration and destination type.

Weather+

This app gives you the weather conditions at locations worldwide plus the forecast for the next 5 days, invaluable when you’re planning your trip.

TripAdvisor

When you’re not sure what to do at your destination, check out TripAdvisor for recommendations. And if you’re worried about your mobile data usage, download the TripAdvisor Offline City Guides before you go – you won’t even need to access the internet.

XE Currency

Ever walked into a shop in a foreign country just to realise that you have no idea how much everything costs, because the prices are in a different currency? You can easily convert every world currency with this app plus it stores the last updated rates, so you can use it offline.

JetLag Genie

JetLag Genie creates a personalised plan so that you can get over jetlag as quickly and easily as possible. It gives you a daily list with the best time to wake up, sleep, get sunshine, stay in the dark or take a nap.

myTracks – The GPS Logger

This app helps you record where you’ve been and presents your tracks on a map. You can even take photos and attach them to the tracks so that you remember interesting places you’ve seen and you want to revisit. What’s great about myTracks is that you don’t need internet connection to use the maps.

Google Translate

A bit of local language can make your life easier in a foreign country, whether you need directions to get to your hotel or you’re ordering a meal at a traditional restaurant.

Finally, a word of warning: iPhone apps are great to make your travels smoother, but remember to check the rates you’ll be charged for using your iPhone before you leave or your bill can give you quite a fright. If you’re staying in the same country for a while, it can be worth getting a local SIM.

New Travel Booking App Is Bringing Sexy Back

There’s a hot, new player in the travel industry in town who’s aiming to sex up your booking experience. The mobile-only app HotelTonight just officially launched in Australia after huge success as one of the most downloaded travel apps in the US with 13 million users worldwide.

The Silicon Valley-born app is striving to outdo its competitors by offering the best, last-minute deals on handpicked hotels, unique stays and boutique properties. In fact, it’s chiefly designed to bring spontaneity back to travel.

Said to be the first of its kind in Australia, the app utilises geo-tagging to identify the user’s location before presenting a curated list of 15,000 hotels in more than 500 destinations across the globe. You can book that night or seven days in advance. In addition, HotelTonight is also one of the first apps to be built into the Apple Watch.

So, how much can you save on a last-minute hotel deal while using it? Up to 50 per cent, says HotelTonight Asia Pacific regional director Stefan Cordiner. In fact, Stefan (pictured) says young, savvy travellers are so enamoured with his app, they can’t live without its “plan less, live more” mantra and range of Hip, Luxe, Solid and Basic classified hotels.

“We are really excited to be leading the mobile revolution in the global and Australian hotel booking industry, a revolution that is not simply a part of our business, it is our business,” he says. “We like to shake things up for people and make travelling a little more spontaneous and fun and we think Australia is more than ready for our brand of spontaneity.

“The app curates Australian properties, with a spotlight on unique stays, and has a rate track feature that alerts you to when hotel prices in your area have dropped. I think this is what people become hooked on once they start using it.”

A free app, available for download from the iPhone App Store, it is suitable for iOS and Android devices. So, how well do young Aussie travellers rate the app? Charlotte Bridgeman, 27 (pictured), a personal style, fashion and lifestyle blogger and marketer based in both Melbourne and Sydney, loves it.

The gorgeous, young blogger, who has some 32,000 followers on her @winstonandwillow Instagram account, regularly recommends the app to friends looking for a weekend getaway or who are planning a “staycation” close by.

“The HT app is easy-to-use, very eye-catching and shows the best, last-minute deals at beautiful handpicked hotels,” Charlotte says.

“Most rooms booked on the same day are around $150 per night which is an amazing deal, especially for how expensive Sydney usually is! I’m travelling to New York in September and am planning on getting some great, last-minute deals using the app for when I’m there. Who would have thought you would ever be able to get an amazing 4-5 star hotel in New York City for under $200!”

“My first experience using the app was when I stayed at Blue Sydney in Woolloomooloo, Sydney. I downloaded the app, made an account, booked the hotel in less than 10 minutes and as I booked the same day as I was staying there, I managed to get a really great rate on the room that is normally four times the price.

Meanwhile, avid Sydney-based traveller Annette Widitz (pictured), an industrial officer with 33,000 plus followers on her @dawa_lhamo Instagram account, also really rates the HotelTonight app.

“It’s so simple,” she says, “I used it to book a luxe hotel to celebrate my husband’s birthday. It took less than a minute to book!

“I don’t like to plan too much when I travel, so to be able to book a beautiful hotel with a huge discount at the last minute is fantastic! The HotelTonight mobile app runs very smoothly and has lots of gorgeous pictures so you can get a clear idea of what your room will look like.  It’s also very quick to use, no waiting for a picture or page to load. I was just looking through the app yesterday, dreaming of where I will stay on my next trip.”

How To Plan The Holiday Of A Lifetime

A New Year brings with it a host of exciting opportunities, so if you made a resolution to see more of the world or to look out for sensational kids’ holidays, why not get in travel mode and start planning? There’s plenty to see and do out there, so with this in mind here are five essential tips to help you plan the trip of a lifetime.

Decide where you want to go

It sounds obvious, but choosing where to go is one of the biggest decisions you will make. Do you want to explore one town, city or country only or would you prefer to push the boat out and go on an unforgettable world tour? The choice is completely yours but it’s well-worth picking destinations that pique your interest and working out your travel routes carefully – particularly if you’re taking kids with you as they’ll want to get from A to B as quickly as possible.

If you’re planning on being adventurous and hopping from place-to-place, you’ll certainly need a map, atlas and a pretty good eye for flight departures and schedules. Writing down dates and working out the logistics of your journey is essential, so perhaps write a step-by-step travel guide to help you out or buy a diary.

Research, research, research

Believe it or not, it’s easy to visit a certain place and miss out on some of the best attractions. So, to stop this from happening, be sure to carry out some research in advance and find out some of the most interesting places to visit including tourist hot spots, swanky hotels and mouth-watering eateries.

You’ll find a wealth of reviews, pictures, information sites and travel blogs online to help you out and you could even head to the local library and pick up some travel books to enhance your knowledge of a certain country. As you research, it might also be worth creating a digital bucket list as this will help keep track of everything you want to do and allow you to tick off activities as you go!

Travel in luxury without breaking the bank

Before you set off or even book your travels, always set a budget to ensure you don’t get in financial trouble due to your trip. Working out how much you have to spend on flights, accommodation and activities is of paramount importance and don’t forget to leave some aside for emergency situations or sneaky extras.

With many affordable holiday packages available these days, it’s possible to travel in luxury without breaking the bank but it’s important to be careful with your money and hold onto your cash wherever possible. Booking flights and accommodation in advance, travelling during unsociable hours and booking last-minute deals are all ways to reduce your outgoings, so do some smart thinking and research. There are also many travel apps out there that will save you money, so it’s worth checking out a few of these before you depart too.

Travelling should be fun, but make sure you plan properly to get the most out of your trip.
