Melbourne Fashion Week Trend Report

What’s the most fashionable Australian city? Melbourne, of course – at least at the moment, thanks to Melbourne Spring Fashion Week.

RELATED: Spring’s Hottest Trend: Lace-Up

Shopping events and runway shows this week featured designs both by well-known designers, such as Akira or Carla Zampatti, and newcomers including graduates from RMIT. The outfits seen on Melbourne’s runways during fashion week are a good indicator of the trends we will be seeing a lot more of in spring and summer, but it’s not just about what’s on the runway, it’s about the outfits you see off the runway that really represent what’s hot and what’s not.

Whether it’s celebrities such as Melbourne Fashion Week ambassador Ashley Hart, or your average fashionista that flocked to the fashion events this week, I took a look at all the biggest trends and trendsetters of Melbourne Fashion Week:

Suit Up!

Who said women have to wear dresses or skirts to look sexy? Take a hint from these two lovely ladies wearing white flared pants and blazers looking absolutely stunning. Just make sure you wear heels with this combo – flared pants can make you look shorter than you are.

Whether they’re long or short, flowy boho dresses in neutral tones are here to stay. The twist? Cut-out patterns revealing a little bit of skin. Quick tip: Instead of trying to hide your underwear by choosing flesh-colored bras and panties (they will be visible anyway), opt for bold colours and make your lingerie part of the outfit.

Floral Fashion

Floral prints and patterns are nothing new, but you can take it a step further with beautiful floral embroidery and silk flowers  used as accessories. It might not be practical, but it sure looks pretty!

Crop it!

Unfortunately, a good ab workout will have to remain part of your exercise routine for now because crop tops are here to stay. Ashley Hart is giving us major ab-envy in this crop-top dress.

Minimise Your Wardrobe: The 80/20 Solution

Do you find yourself hoarding lots of clothes and accessories, but still constantly stuck with nothing to wear? There’s a statistic which states that we wear just 20 per cent of our wardrobe around 80 per cent of the time. Who else is looking at their wardrobe (or floordrobe) right about now?

RELATED: How To Add Colour To Your Wardrobe

Whether you’re on a tight budget when it comes to clothing, or seriously contemplating a reduction of your wardrobe, the 80/20 wardrobe plan will be the answer to your prayers.

How does it work?

80 per cent of your clothes and accessory budget is allocated to pieces which will form the foundation of your wardrobe. This could be anything from a much-coveted leather jacket for winter, an LBD for the warmer months, or even just an everyday pair of denim jeans. It leaves no room for impulse-buying or chronic late-night shopping, either.

Tip: Keep organised!

Make sure you have a list of your must-have pieces either in a favourites folder or stashed away on your phone. To keep from impulse buying, think about the item for at least one week. That way you might even forget about it altogether and save some money, which is a plus.

What about the other 20 per cent?

The rest is free to spend on sales, a tiny impulse purchase, or just something you had to have before leaving the store. Since the bulk of your budget is already put aside for those more serious pieces, this means that you’re less likely to waste your money on an impulse buy.

The damage will be something small and discrete rather than a white leather and fringed jacket for the summer (not that there’s anything wrong with that!).

Tip: Avoid online!

This could be mighty tempting for those who love an ASOS or Topshop sale, but it’s not really worth it if you don’t know your size. Plus, think about the postage costs which are only free if you spend a certain amount of cash. Who else has time to wait for their package to arrive?

Save yourself the disappoint and try these items on in-store if you have the chance. Also, take pictures (from all angles) and save them in your phone.

Traveling In Style: The Mini Fashion Bar

Have you ever been on a holiday wishing that you’d packed that one cute dress you have or the more comfortable shoes? The future of traveling will eliminate the stress of packing the right clothes because European clothing chain Pimkie has come up with a simple, but genius idea: The Mini Fashion Bar.

RELATED: The 5 Weirdest Hotels In The World

Imagine arriving at your hotel and besides a mini bar full of overpriced drinks and snacks, you find an entire wardrobe packed with the latest trends and weather appropriate clothes. Sounds too good to be true? Well, in Antwerp (Belgium) it’s already become a reality.

Pimkie has stocked hotel rooms with their latest collection so that you can browse, try on, and shop from the comfort of your hotel room. Need a different size? Just call the fashion concierge at reception and they will get it for you.

In every Mini Fashion Bar, you will find handy staples like a raincoat, comfortable shoes and accessories to dress up any outfit, but it doesn’t stop there; Pimkie stocks the Mini Fashion Bar with items that are appropriate for current events in the city that you might want to attend. How clever is that?

The easiest part is paying, as the clothes that you want to buy are simply charged to your room and you can pay everything when checking out. Can shopping get any easier? If you ask me, this is one of the best fashion related ideas in a long time and I wish every hotel I stay in from now on will have a Mini Fashion Bar.

So far, there are only plans for hotels in Europe to introduce it, but I have a feeling that this concept could soon go global.

Growing Out Your Armpit Hair: Yay Or Nay?

To us women, shaving our armpit hair might seem like the most natural thing to do, but if you think about it, it’s not natural at all. In fact, women only started shaving their legs, armpits, and other body parts about 100 years ago when fashion changed and women’s bodies weren’t covered from neck to toe anymore.

RELATED: Why Feminism Is Not A Dirty Word

An idea of what is beautiful soon turned into a social norm and by the 1950s, every woman knew how to work a razor. Nowadays, it seems like shaving your armpits isn’t really a choice, it is expected of you.

A few celebrities are questioning that notion now and have started a small armpit hair revolution. Leading the pack of modern feminists is Miley Cyrus, who stopped shaving her armpits a few months ago and isn’t afraid to show them off. She even dyed her armpit hair pink at one stage and thanked photographer Terry Richards for not retouching the photos he took of Miley and (all) her hair.

Other celebs who prefer to go au naturel are Girls stars Lena Dunham and Jemima Kirke, and even Madonna showed off her underarm hair on Instagram recently. So, what do we think about this trend? Is not shaving your armpit hair a sign of being an empowered woman fighting for equality?

The answer is yes, if we assume that women only shave their armpits because men want them to. However, it’s not quite as black and white and I am sure that many women out there happily shave their hair without even caring much about what men think, just like most men shave their beards because they prefer it that way.

In the end, the way we look is always going to be a reflection of society’s ideals and expectations, whether it’s women’s armpit hair or men’s beards. What’s important is that we give people the freedom to choose. So if you want to grow out your armpit hair, please do so! But if you don’t, that’s absolutely fine, too.

Celebrity Trend: Denim Overalls

It’s the celebrities’ fashion crush of the moment: overalls. From Victoria’s Secret models to Hollywood actresses and singers, the humble blue denim overall has made it on to the radar of fashionistas. And who can blame them? Denim overalls are comfy and practical (unless you’re in the bathroom) and if styled correctly, they can be very glamourous in a trendy 70s kind of way.

RELATED: Celebrity Style: Denim

The difference between overalls worn by factory workers as a protection garment and overalls worn as fashion statements is the cut. A well-tailored onesie will bring out curves you didn’t know you ever had.

Case in point: Taylor Swift who recently stepped out in a dark blue denim overall and made it look quite sexy. How did she do it? By choosing a skinny-leg overall which sits tight on your hips, but loose on your upper body. She combined the one-piece with a cropped white t-shirt baring a bit of skin around her waist.

Celebrity Sightings In New York City - May 28, 2015

Kate Bosworth sported a similarly fitted overall but opted for a flared leg and white tank top, giving her outfit more of a 70s vibe.

Celebrity Sightings In New York City - April 16, 2015

Model Lily Aldridge proved that overalls are comfortable when she wore her baby blue denim onesie on a flight to LA a few weeks ago. We love the long-sleeved white shirt she wore underneath – perfect for colder days.

Lily Aldridge denim overall

For a more sporty, casual look, take a hint from the ever stylish Sarah Jessica Parker and wear a classic boyfriend-cut overall. To keep it from looking boring, make sure you cuff the legs and – if wearing a long-sleeved top – also roll up your sleeves.

So, if you love your jeans and denim in general (who doesn’t?), why not give overalls a go? The days of pulling up your pants are over.

Trend To Watch: Marble Prints

What comes to mind when I say the word “marble”? Luxurious, elegant and classic would be a few words that I associate with it – three very positive descriptions, might I add. So, is that why marble print has become so popular lately?

RELATED: Interior Design Trend: Industrial Design

Real marble is, of course, very expensive and can usually be found in high-end kitchens and bathrooms, but faux marble and marble prints can be found on pretty much anything at the moment. From sneakers to phone cases and wallets, marble is one of the biggest trends of 2015. Here are a few of our favourites:

Asos Marble Print Dress

If you love wearing black and white, then this asos marble print dress is a must-have for your wardrobe. It’s a perfect combination of modern and classic – you really can’t go wrong with it.

Wallets can be a fashionable accessory, too! Think about it, how often do you take out your wallet? Often enough to justify buying this marble print Rebecca Minkoff wallet.

How To Style Fringe Clothing

Although it might remind you of the wild-wild west, never fear, fringe is back bigger than ever! There are subtle ways to incorporate this tricky trend into your wardrobe, without of course looking like a cowboy… Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

RELATED: Celebrity Style – Whitney Port

Accessories are just some of the most subtle ways to ease yourself into a new trend. A beautiful fringe clutch can spice-up any outfit, regardless of if you’re wearing a LBD or denim jeans.

How To Style Fringe Clothing

This one is for the daring dresser, especially if you want to make a big statement for an evening of dinner and cocktails. A fringe skirt looks amazing with a strappy pair of stiletto heels, or even just classic sneakers.

How To Style Fringe Clothing

Who would’ve thought that heels with a bit of fringe could drive so many people right into lust? That’s exactly what happened when blogger Aimee Song posted her amazing Shutz Shoes fringe stiletto’s, which gathered 46,000 likes and over 1000 comments. We’re already making our order…

A bohemian-inspired poncho is the perfect spring accessory, especially for festivals or concerts. Why? It’s quick and easy to wear, and doesn’t feel like it’s too overwhelming for the heat.

How To Style Fringe Clothing

Jazz up your standard moto-style leather jacket by investing in a fun piece with fringe. It’s perfect for those who have a predominately black colour palette and want to add some texture into their monochrome outfits.

Finally, a fringe scarf adds the finishing touches to a winter-inspired outfit. Not only will it keep your neck warm, but it looks amazing when paired with a classic black blazer or thick coat.

The Sneaker Must-Haves This Season

It’s not often that a fashion trend is as long-lasting and as comfortable as the sneaker trend that has been around for a few years now. Sneakers are everywhere and have become acceptable and fashionable outside the gym.

RELATED: How To Adapt The Normcore Trend

While I was waiting for the bus this morning, 5 out of the 6 girls around me were wearing running shoes and there wasn’t a single gym bag in sight.

It’s time to kick your heels off! If you haven’t got a good pair of sneakers in your wardrobe already (an even if you do), these are the four sneaker must-haves of the moment that you will want to get your hands on.

The styler ($130)

adidas original supercolour

The adidas Superstar Supercolor sneakers come in 50 different colours – pretty much every colour you could want – and were designed in collaboration with Pharrell Williams. Needless to say, these bold sneakers are for those who like to make a fashion statement.

The runner ($160)

Nike Flyknit Yellow

The Nike Roshe Flyknit is the perfect example of a running shoe that is too pretty to be used only during your workouts. Not only are they super light, but the honeycomb weave style takes the classic Nike shoe to another level of awesomeness.

The worker ($402)

Marc Jacobs sneaker

This is the sneaker for people that don’t like sneakers. With their monochrome look and leather fringe details, these Marc Jacobs shoes will give you the comfort of a sneaker and the elegance of loafers. Ideal for outfits that require a bit more sophistication.

The designer ($870)

Burberry sneaker

The Lamborghini  among the sneakers, these Burberry shoes don’t come cheap and should definitely not be worn at the gym. They’re every fashionista’s dream and will be appropriate with any outfit and at any occasion as long as you tell everyone that they’re Burberry, darling.

Underwear As Outerwear: The Lingerie Trend

Whether you love it or loathe it, the underwear as outerwear trend is extremely popular, especially amongst celebrities.

If you want to try this trend at home without getting any weird looks, try some of the following outfit ideas.

RELATED: How To Choose The Right Lingerie For Your Outfit

DO: Denim

Pair a silky, satin dress with a casual piece of clothing such as a denim jacket. Not only does it help to balance out the entire outfit, but the colours look pretty cool!

Arm candy is optional, however it always helps to spice-up any outfit.

Underwear As Outerwear: The Lingerie Trend

Play with texture

Keeping in the same colour palette is always a safe choice, especially if your bodice is inspired by lingerie. Ashlee Simpson kept this outfit looking demure at a recent event, even though she’s completely wearing black.

The texture of the bodice isn’t too overwhelming and works within the frameworks of the entire outfit.

Underwear As Outerwear: The Lingerie Trend

Keep your entire outfit balanced out by showing off a sexy lace bra with a chiffon shirt. For some, this look might seem a little too risqué, but it works perfectly on an evening out for drinks.

Underwear As Outerwear: The Lingerie Trend

Pair with trousers

A top which shows a bit too much skin looks best when paired with some skinny or boyfriend-fitting trousers. Daisy Lowe shows us how to rock this style with a skinny belt and court heels.

Underwear As Outerwear: The Lingerie Trend

Dress it down

Since anything with lace or satin material can make an outfit a little too dressy, why not pair them with casual pieces? This bright pink cardigan makes for a perfect day to night outfit with lace-up heels and a mini tote bag.

Underwear As Outerwear: The Lingerie Trend

Crop top

Pairing a statement crop top with other basic items is also another way to try this trend. It shows some skin without going overboard and can also be worn during the day with a denim or flannel shirt tied at the waist.

Underwear As Outerwear: The Lingerie Trend

DON’T: Forget your pants

This outfit by Taylor Momsen might work if she’s performing onstage, but it won’t get you on the best dressed list. Wear a longer skirt and keep some mystery to your outfit!

Underwear As Outerwear: The Lingerie Trend

Use statement accessories

Your outfit should already be making the statement for you, therefore any flashy shoes, bags, and jewellery is strictly a no-no.

Underwear As Outerwear: The Lingerie Trend

Buy online

As with many other trends, you need to go into the store and try the clothing on. Buying online doesn’t guarantee that you will always find your size – clothing that is too big or too small is less than flattering for your personal body.

New York Fashion Week Trend Report

It’s that time of the year again, fashion season kicked off with New York Fashion Week, giving us an idea of the trends we’ll be wearing soon. The city that never sleeps is even more awake during this crazy time with fashionistas flocking to the runways and celebrities fighting over front row seats. While there is a lot of hustle and bustle, in the end it all comes down to the fashion shows.

RELATED: Diary of a New York Fashion Week intern

With London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Week to follow, New York’s designers are the first ones to show the fashion obsessed how they are supposed to dress in about 6 months time. Curious? I spotted the following trends:

1. Sheer skirts

Showing some skin without looking “cheap” can be quite tough, but the easy solution is sheer fabric. Jason Wu, Diane von Furstenberg, and Derek Lam show how it’s done with dresses that cover and reveal just enough.

fashion Prabal Gurung modelDiane von Furstenberg fashion model

2. Bright red

The Fall collections are usually rather full of neutral tones and lots of black, but this season there was a popping colour on almost every runway. Bright Red will be a must have, especially when it comes to coats.

Prabal Gurung fashion show Diane von Furstenberg fashion show

3. Buckle up

The body part that we want to accentuate next season is definitely the waist. Belts around the models’ waists in all sizes and shapes served as the it-accessory at Opening Ceremony and Jason Wu, making even the most androgynous look a little bit more feminine.

4. Turquoise

Yes, it’s a tricky colour to pull off, but according to Derek Lam, DKNY, and Zoe Jordan, Turquoise is the new Black. Pair it with Whites for a crisp, beachy look or make a bold statement by pairing Turquoise with Browns and Reds.

2015 Oscars Trend: Porcelain Skin

As Hollywood’s elite took to the red carpet for the 2015 Oscar Awards today, we noticed there was something missing: fake tan! This year the A-list went ‘au naturel’ and ditched their bronzers in favour of polished porcelain skin.

RELATED: Throwback Thursday: The Return Of The Midriff

Celebrity make-up artist Lee Pycroft recently told the Daily Mail: “Alabaster skin is a chic, classy, beautiful look that’s been gunning for a renaissance. It’s been cherished by the fashion world for several years – think of all those Prada campaigns with Karen Elson – and now it’s taking centre stage.”

1/2 teaspoon arrowroot powder

Refined shea butter

Cocoa powder

Dried beet powder (depending on what colour you want)

1. Combine the arrowroot powder in a small bowl, then mix through your preferred colouring agent.

2. Add the shea butter (start with 1/4 teaspoon), to the back of a spoon and mix until the formula is light and creamy. Add more if you want the eyeshadow to have the consistency of a creamy formula, or less if you prefer the matte look.

3. Transfer the mixture into a clean, sterile, container and tightly add the lid. Store in the fridge to keep it fresh, and you can it use it for up to 2 weeks.

4. To create your own personalised colour combinations, mix cocoa powder and dried beet powder for a soft shade of pink. Turmeric and cocoa powder makes a unique shade of copper, and a pinch of nutmeg creates earthy tones for neutral lids.

How To Style A Duster Coat

Duster coats are an all-year-round wardrobe essential because they can be layered according to the weather. Choose a base shade such as black, white, khaki, or grey since they are the easiest colours to wear with the majority of your outfits.

Inspire your creativity with the following ways to wear your duster coat, regardless of the weather.

RELATED: 8 Street Style Stars To Follow

Basic black jeans and a light duster coat is the best outfit when you’re running on zero inspiration. Not only is this ensemble super-comfy, but it looks put together when paired with a pretty black clutch. If you’re taking this outfit from day to night, trade the sneakers for a pair of heeled ankle boots instead.

If the weather is acting up but you still want to show off your legs, choose a leather or denim skirt to pair with your duster coat. Shades of black, grey, and white work beautifully together, especially if you need to feel comfy for the day.

Style a monochrome playsuit with a pastel blue duster coat just like Kylie Jenner. This outfit is easy on the eyes, and is complimented with a beautiful brown fedora hat. Heels, or course are optional! You could always trade them for some beautiful flat sandals.

Midi dress

Go for a classy look and wear your favourite midi dress with a longline duster coat. This is a sophisticated look which is perfect for an evening out, or even the office. A soft beige coloured trench is perfect since it never goes out of style.

White shirt

Bring some life to a casual white t-shirt and wear it with a crisp duster coat. If you want to make this look a little smart-casual, wear some killer stiletto heels and leather bag to complete the look.

Mini dress

Go for the classic sports-luxe look by adapting a casual mini dress into this trend. A collared duster coat brings a level of sophistication to any outfit, but you can always make this look feel dressier by wearing some summer sandals instead.

Current Trends That Were Once SO Uncool

There are a handful of trends that have emerged in the past year that, some time ago, were so not cool. Trends come and go, but these ones appear to have hit the hot list for the first time in 2014.

Olivia Palermo, Kim Kardashian, Jessica Alba and Miranda Kerr are all loving this look. The rules: don’t wear the same shade of denim. Style with funky accessories and statement shoes. We’re loving Kerr’s preference for leopard print footwear.

 Clashing prints

Tropical, geometric, floral, animal – where does it end? Nowhere, apparently. As we move past the age of normcore, we welcome the era of… well, oddcore. Anything goes in 2014, where you can wear your floral skirt with your tiki top and be the most stylin’ person in the room. Follow SHESAID’s style guide for clashing prints.
