This Is How I Got Victoria’s Secret Angel Hair

Nadine Dilong

It’s not as hard as you think.

If I had to choose one hairstyle to wear for the rest of my life, it would undoubtedly be long, loose waves, as seen on the Victoria’s Secret Angels every year when they strut their perfect bodies with their perfect makeup and perfect hair down the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway – and I know I’m not the only one thinking this.

There is something so sexy yet casual about these undone beachy waves that make them absolutely lust-worthy and perfect for any occasion. So when I was given the opportunity to have my hair styled with the Beachwaver Co., the same curling iron used backstage at the VSFS, I couldn’t wait to see how it’s done.

I expected tons of different hair products, tools and complicated stylist jargon, so when my hair was done in less than 15 minutes using steps I understood without the use of a dictionary, I was more than impressed and felt a glimpse of hope that I could recreate this look myself at home; I am all for a quick beauty routine using any hacks I can find to save time.

In the past, I experimented with different curling irons and was always disappointed, as it took way too long to achieve a good curl, and they always looked better on one side than the other. Not to mention the fact I needed tons of hairspray to maintain the look for the whole day.

This is where the Beachwaver Co. is different. With the push of a button, the iron can rotate to the left or right, giving you hair that curls away from your face on both sides. This is the main secret to the VS Angel look, according to celebrity hair stylist and creator of the Beachwaver Co. Sarah Potempa.

“Normally you would have to use two hands, twist the hair around the iron and hold the hair close to the barrel. The Beachwaver rotates for you, and the clamp holds the hair in place so your fingers don’t have to go anywhere near the hot barrel,” explains Potempa. “It makes it simple to master luscious locks. If you turn the iron the same way on both sides of your hair, the curls won’t frame the face. So, with the Beachwaver, simply select the side you’re curling and press go.”

So I did. I am not very talented when it comes to styling my hair – I usually opt for a sleek look after having had a Keratin treatment – but since I’ve tried the Beachwaver Co., beachy waves have become part of my hair repertoire. It’s as easy as it sounds.

Hold for about 10 seconds, release the clamp and slide the iron downwards. Don’t touch the curl until it has completely cooled down.

A great tip from Potempa is to spray hairspray onto your brush instead of directly onto your hair – the result won’t look as stiff and will give it more movement.

My curls usually last for two days when I follow Potempa’s final advice: “Starting on freshly washed hair is best, and prepping hair with mousse will help maintain the curls. At night, twist the hair away from the face into three to four buns.”

When I posted a selfie of my ‘Angel waves’ on Instagram, the compliments started rolling in. My friends all thought I had a new cut and color and were surprised to find out it was just the result of some good old curling, only with an incredibly cool tool. My colleagues commented on how shiny and healthy my hair looked, and even when I put my hair up in a ponytail the waves made it look like an expensive salon ‘do.

So while I will never have the body of a Victoria’s Secret model, it’s satisfying to know I can easily have the hair of one.
