Tom Cruise has opened up for the first time about the divorce he never expected from Katie Holmes.
The actor admits that the divorce, initiated by Holmes, came out of the blue. “I did not expect that.”
Cruise and Holmes, 34, split just days before his 50th birthday in June last year.
“Life is like a tragic comedy, you need a sense of humour,” he said.
“Life is a challenge. You are 50 and you think you have everything in order and suddenly it hits you, that’s what life is all about.”
He also revealed in the interview with German TV that it gave him “an incredible amount of time to reflect.”
The celebrity couple settled last month with the agreement that Holmes be given primary custody of six-year-old daughter Suri, with Tom being granted extensive visitation rights.
The couple married in November 2006 in a lavish ceremony in Italy after an infamous whirlwind romance (and that Oprah couch-jumping moment).
Cruise was previously married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children who live with him, Isabella, 19, and Connor, 17.
