Celebrity Trend: Gender-Neutral Baby Names
Celebs are infamous for giving their kids some, er, creative names. Just as the world was recovering from Apple (of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin) and Suri (Cruise… duh), along came Blue Ivy Carter and North West.
Earlier this year, Drew Barrymore gave birth to a girl named Frankie. (It should be noted that Frankie’s mom is also the owner of a gender-neutral name!) I don’t know about you, but when I think Frankie, I immediately think Valli.
Harper has also been a popular name in recent years, used by the likes of Neil Patrick Harris, David and Victoria Beckham, and Bill Hader. The name is popular as a girl’s name, like To Kill A Mockingbird author, Harper Lee, but can also be worn by a boy, for example, Paul Simon’s son.
This year, Kelly Clarkson gave birth to a daughter she called River – a name more famously given to men (i.e. River Phoenix). Speaking of Kelly, we know a surfer (hint: surname Slater) who also goes by this common girl’s name.
Bowie is an oddly popular choice in 2014, as the middle name of Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s son, Apollo Bowie, and designer Rebecca Minkoff’s daughter, Bowie Lou. We can only assume it is derived from the surname of everyone’s favorite androgynous pop god, David Bowie.
What are you favorite unisex names?
