“Water for Elephants” Movie Review
Water For Elephants
The film Description
Water for Elephants is a 2011 American romantic drama film based on Sara Gruen’s novel of the same name, directed by Francis Lawrence, from a screenplay by Richard LaGravenese. It stars Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz. A veterinary student abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet.
Beautifully made this romantic movies based on Sara Gruen’s 2006 best selling novel “Water for Elephants” is well worth seeing. The movie tells the tale of a young Polish immigrant, Jacob Jankowski and is set in the Depression in US in the 1930’s. It has all the elements of a great story, friendship, trust, jealousy, loyalty and of course love all woven into to the backdrop of the raging 1930’s and the Benzini Brothers travelling circus.
If you are not a fan of Robert Pattinson and have never seen a Twilight and don’t want to, then don’t worry there isn’t a vampire in sight in this movie. Young Robert Pattinson shows he can do much more than make teenage girls scream and faint in his role as the central character in this romantic tale. Reece Witherspoon nearly steals the show as the ethereal Marlena, the circus owners wife and star of the circus. The circus owner and Ringmaster August, played brilliantly by Christoph Waltz is suspicious of the relationship between his wife and Jacob…and that’s when the story really takes off.
Brilliantly written and filmed in such a way that one might think they are watching an old fashioned classic movie, the rich characters and complex relationships take you along for the ride to the very end.
Having not read the book (yet) apparently the husband of Marlena was not the same as the circus owner but it seems like a good idea to put those characters together and Christoph Waltz is spellbinding in his portrayal of the troubled husband, battling his own demons as well as keeping the circus afloat.
If you love a good old fashioned love story then this is the perfect movie for you. Don’t think it is much of date movie as your other half may not appreciate the old world love story, glamour and fashion, especially Reece Witherspoon’s outfits as much as you and your girl pals. Well worth seeing whilst still on at the movies!
