Wine of the month: Bella Coppia Arneis

November 4, 2009

Wrap your lips around this dry white wine from Adelaide Hills and reign in a lazy Sunday afternoon in style.

Summer’s just around the corner and if you’re searching for a new summer tipple look no further than Bella Coppia Arneis by First Drop Wines, a boutique winery in South Australia. No cellaring for this wine…it’s drink up and enjoy! Perfect for garden parties, BBQs and the traditional seafood Christmas lunch.

First Drop’s philosophy is all about passion – for life, fun and flavour! Its two founders, Matt Gant, aka Gantos and John Retsas, aka JR have made a lifelong commitment to making kick arse booze – wines with flavour and texture and a splash of funk and harvest their eclectic varieties from unique vineyards of the Barossa and the Adelaide Hills.

We love Bella Coppia Arneis, $25. Forget your G&T, this pithy, dry white Arneis (which originally hails from Piedmont in northern Italy) will quench, refresh and go down very well. Grown in Kuitpo in the cool climbs of the southern Adelaide Hills it tastes of citrus and lime zest with a hint of nashi pear and is pale straw with tinges of green in colour. Its aroma takes you off to Mediterranean holidays!

“This wine isn’t just an aperitivo tease, says award-wining winemaker Matt Gant, co-owner of First Drop Wines. Its purity of fruit, zippy persistence, and finely textured finish make it the ‘perfect match’ for a feast of dishes. From fresh scallops with ginger and shallots to chilli crabs; from salt ‘n’ pepper squid to agnolotti a lapin. Some say Sauvignon Blanc, some say Pinot Grigio; I say Arneis!”

Bella Coppia Arneis is stocked in some of the country’s most discerning restaurants including Matt Moran’s Aria in Sydney. Go to the website to buy online or find stockists.
